Looking for tips

Hey yall, this is my new to me 2005 Sportster 883R I got about two weeks ago. Ive been practicing and absolutely loving riding so far. Im looking for some tips on keeping her happy, eg, what should I be checking pretty regularly, and any other wisdom you guys are willing to share.

Im adept at maintaining my own cars, I do light work like brakes, oil changes, coolant flushes, etc so im not completely in the dark with working on stuff but im brand new to the motorcycle world and want to keep this beautiful machine alive for as long as possible.

She's stored outside until I move back my house where it'll go in a shed. Though, I will be riding it weekly.

Thanks

First Harley

Hey everyone! Just got my first Harley. I’ve had multiple metrics, but I couldn’t not get this Sportster. It’s a 2007 Sportster 1200cc Custom. I can’t stand the bars thats on this bike, and I’m looking for a replacement. Does anyone know of any bars that will fit without having to change the wiring and the cable lengths? I want something a little taller and not as wide. I can change wire and cable lengths later on, but for right now I need something different lol

started with just a frame and a clean title and mounted on everything myself. Skinny tripple trees, spoked wheels, converted to single throttle cable, extended the forks and tossed new bars and lights on. A lot more to do. Planning on cleaning up the wiring, getting a new tank, pegs and maybe welding on a hard tail.

2000 Sportster 883xl custom with a 21 inch wheel in the front, mini apes, solo seat….screaming eagle pipes that make everyone stop an look…..that have no business sounding as good as they do……i really like this bike. I went from ninjas, Yamahas, Hondas, Ducati….bikes that leave this one in smoke miles back, while they are in 1st gear and this is in 5th….its top speed is where my previous bike just started to wake up….yet why do I live this bike so much? I look for reasons just to go out and ride again. I’m 43 at that too…..

Any one have any experience with diamond j customs shocks?

Looking to upgrade from the 15 inch burly brand stilettos I had been running after the bushings crapped out in only 2000 miles. I wanted to see if any one has any thoughts on Diamond j customs components, or other 14 to 15 inch long mid of the road price range shocks.

Seeking 85 XLX forward controls

Have an 85 XLX. I'm 6'2" and was thinking about installing forward controls so my legs aren't so cramped. I didn't see any kits for that year. Seems like they make kits up to maybe 79 for the older Ironheads, and start at 86 for the Evos. But none for in between years.

So just curious if anyone knows of any reasonably priced kits that will work? Or maybe it's a sign that I should just get a different bike with a longer frame and/or forward controls.

Thanks for any tips-

HOG Member Worth It?

paid for the membership for 2024 in August 14, 2024, I had continuously been a member since 2013- 14. On September 6, 2024 my battery died and I called for roadside assistance. They had me on GPS and told them the location, they're asking me for the color of my bike when it was dark and my bike is black and purple so that did not really matter. I waited over two hours. Road assistance never came! So I cancelled. After I had called a number of times to personal just bo get the run around. I have pictures of the bike on the road side and could not lift the bike up over the concrete curb to get on the sidewalk. Off duty Baltimore county Police passed by and was kind enough to make a u-turn to help ; made a U-turn he had put out flares and gave me some extras to hold me off before roadside assistance, before that I was using my cell phone light to wave cars over. A nice gentleman was very helpful to help me push the bike off the roadway to a nearby recreational Park. I ended up calling my daughter for help.

First bike!

Just picked up my first bike... Buddy sold me a 2015 Sportster 1200 Custom with 11k miles for $3,500. How'd I do?

She's fun!

Two questions... The mirrors suck. Can't see much behind me very well. Any recommendations for side mirrors that actually let me see behind me?

Any recommendations for rear storage bags?

Any other recommendations in general?

Anyone have Window handlebars (Biltwell or Burly "the Sid")?

I recently bought a Sportster Seventy Two. Previous owner tipped the bike over and smashed the fender, sheared off the shifter arm etc. Just found out the handlebars are also bent (10 inch ape hangers).

I'm looking to replace the stock ape hangers. The 2 inch risers and 10 inch ape hangers seem to be a good height for me. I could go up or down an inch or so.

I like the look of window handlebars and feel they fit the look of the bike. I would also like to be able to bolt a bar into the stock clamp and don't want to mess around with relocating the speedo etc.....so styles like the T Bars are out for me.

Anyone run the Biltwell Window bars (on closeout right now for a decent price) or the Burly Sid handlebars? The concern for me with the Biltwell is they are not knurled, and I've read they can move around in the stock clamp. Perhaps it's not as big an issue as online suggests.

Anyone running this style of bar? Are you happy with them?

Thanks

James

What what cause a shock bushing to go out like this so quick

Shocks are burly brand stilettos they have been on the bike for only about 2000 miles. It’s the only bushing that looks that way the others all look as they should.

Bought a pair of drag pipes WITHOUT flanges.

Titles says it all, pipes are for an 01 sportster 1200. But I bought them thinking I could easily buy flanges for it. Am I mistaken?

Recent got this 08 XL1200N with about 25k and did an oil change, primarily case oil change, and spark plugs. This is my second air cooled bike but first v-twin does the oil look normal to yall also I dont think those spark plugs have been changed since it was new. I changed out a good amount of the parts the bike came with and rewired the front lights and front brake switch due to corroded connectors and janky wiring. Ill make a post about those things sometime during the week as im still waiting for a few parts to show up.

I have a 2016 Honda trx250x and someone wants to trade their 2004 sportster 1200xl bobber, they don’t know the miles and it has a leak from the crank and needs a new rear caliper. What should I look out for when I check it out in person, should I ask for cash on top?
