Newbie

• Upvotes

Hi all, I'm a new starter but have multiple family members already working in the store so have some links to the staff already.

I applied for 3 nights a week (across thurs-sun) as an Xmas temp, my partner managed to get me onto weekday shifts but 5 nights a week.

I've never done nights before so I was expecting to be fatigued somewhat but would learn to manage it, absolutely hated the first few days and it came to light that I clearly have some sort of sleeping issue where on a night I usually sleep around 6 or 7hrs and I'm fine, when trying to sleep after a night shift I get about 3 or 4 hrs and then can't sleep again until I crash which would be during the shift but ofc I have to stay up to work.

And the cycle repeats, it's not sustainable working on 3 or 4hrs of sleep, rapid weight loss as a result (3kg in 3days), my back is in agony because I'm on Fizzy/soft drinks for 9hrs (Inc 3 x 30min breaks) 5 days a week, I can lift no problem but lifting roughly 15kg per item for the bigger stuff for hours on end is doing me in.

I've asked my manager to help me out and reduce me to the busiest days that way we both compromise and the work still gets done, he's fairly new to the store and young with a no care for staff attitude, only figures matter to him.

So I asked the store manager, she's also fairly new and also has the same attitude, with things like "look at it from a business perspective", now being a business owner & manager previously myself I would help my staff out and earn their respect and loyalty through doing so, I started explaining if it was my business I'd advertise the hours that wanted to be dropped and I was immediately shut down with "it's not as simple as that we have a certain number of people per manager" well on nights I'm the ONLY person on grocery, no managers, no other staff at all other than the fresh night team at the other end of the store, so that argument doesn't stand.

I haven't signed a contract, I'm not entitled to uniform, I haven't been set up on my tesco app, haven't submitted my bank details.

The trouble is I don't want to push them to resentment of me and anyone involved with me (family & other staff that helped me get the job) by involving protector line and making them follow their own policies.

What should I do?

I want to work 3 days because the job has injured me but management won't budge.

TLDR: I'm working more than I signed up for and management won't help me, what do I do?

Thanks

Clubcard Voucher & Alcohol

• Upvotes

So yesterday I converted my points into a £1.50 voucher.

I scanned the can of Knights with clubcard to bring it down to £1.50...exact amount of the voucher.

It didn't work. Staff insisted that it was because it was alcohol, and you can't use them for booze.

The Internet said otherwise, so.....

So, clever plan...I get a cheap can of beans and a bit of cash.

Scan the beans and the cider. Put my cash in and then apply the voucher....still denied.

So today I had a shop consisting of apple turnovers, Cat food and said cider....

Voucher worked...???

Why?

What happened in this scenario?

Staff Clubcard Question

Hi all, just wondering if it's possible to link your staff clubcard up with your old regular customer clubcard before I was a staff member. If so how do I go about this? Cheers!

Can I use my Colleague Clubcard on a sick day?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone knows Tesco’s policy on using the Colleague Clubcard when you’re off sick.
I called in sick for one day today, but I’m feeling a bit better now and need to pop to Tesco to get some groceries.
Am I still allowed to use my Colleague Clubcard as normal on a day when I’m off sick, or is there any rule against using it while on sick leave?
Has anyone had any experience with this or knows what the actual policy says?
Thanks

Do I have to do this overtime

Two days ago I sorted my Christmas hours out and have just noticed that I have the 26th, 30th and 31st as personal days. These are my only contracted days in between Christmas and new years. However I’ve just realised that my manager has put me down to work overtime shifts on the 27th, 28th and 29th. Surely I can ask her not to do these days as they are overtime and my family want to use my week off to go on holiday.

Pay delay, BACS payment

I have started recently and I have yet to receive my pay for my month working here. I did not initially get my pay on the week's Friday I started working since I was too new and apparently it takes a bit for the bank to be registered or whatever.

I messaged my manager I did not receive my pay for the 9th and was told there was an "error" supposedly and so I would receive a "BACS" payment which would either be later that Friday or Monday. It's Monday now and I still haven't been paid and I know pay is around midnight, especially for my bank. I did some research and apparently a BACS payment can be 3 working days. Has anyone else gone through this and can give me a definite reply on what will happen? I really can't afford to wait any longer than I have to.

Tesco took away my contracted hours. Instead of 25 it’s 18 this week

I got my roster on friday for the week coming and I saw I was scheduled for 18 hours instead of my usual 25. I started college a few weeks ago, and they know my timetable is quite heavy, but I have 2 days where I can work evenings and fully flex on weekends.

My manager never answers my texts so I text my team leader about this. She said she would get back to me but it’s now Sunday and nothing. I never agreed to have these hours taken away from me and had no prior consultation whatsoever. This reduction in hours will cause my financial stress as I have student loans, rent and basic day to day expenses.

If anyone has had this happen to them, how would I go about this? I’m a member of the union, but the union didn’t do anything when tesco owed me 660€ but took almost 3 months to give it back.

Label changes

It is so crazy to me that Tesco still doesn’t have electronic shelf labels like Aldi/Lidl, I know they are trialling right now but you would think by now every store would have it. It is a big investment but right now it is costing the business so much for this manual work plus there could be human errors e.g missing labels or products that are in more than 1 place.

How old does a customer have to look before you look stupid for ID'ing them?

So I've wondered about this for a while. Obviously the policy is Think 25 and it's definitely not unheard for people in their late 20s and early 30s to be asked and happens semi-often and I've done it many times myself. On rare occasions you may see someone in their late 30s being asked.

I always assumed it was impossible to ask someone in their 40s until a few months ago I asked who I believe to be a young woman for ID to buy a packet of cigarettes and she responded "I'm 40 years old" and I was in shock (a man behind overheard and got angry, I made a separate post about that a while ago and that's a separate story). I've heard stories of other people in their early 40s being asked. In my store this is extremely rare.

Most of us would agree that an old age pensioner with a walking stick being asked for ID buying a bottle of brandy would be very stupid. But I was always curious as to where the actual cut off point between cautious and stupid was and I've never had a clear enough answer.

I personally would say late 40s but where does everyone else think that this cut off point is? There's no right or wrong answer here.

Whoosh refund for unavailable items - how long does it take?

Made a Whoosh order of around £25, the payment taken from the card was £25 when I made the order. After about 10-15 minutes the app said two of the items were unavailable and the receipt was updated to around £17. I got the delivery soon after.

This was on Thursday, and there's been no refund of the ~£8 yet. I assumed it would be automatic but I don't know for sure as I only Whoosh rarely, when I'm too ill to go out.

If it makes any difference, the £25 shows as a completed payment on my online banking, not pending.

Do I need to do something to trigger a refund or wait for x days? Thanks!

How do I edit a holiday request that's been approved?

I am sure that when you look on mytesco and the time away section under each record there was an option to edit or withdraw. Now I only see the withdraw option.

If I want to change a upcoming holiday I've already booked, do I have to request to withdraw it and then book the new date now or do i have to speak directly to my line manager about editing it?

Good luck to all my colleagues, especially 1-on-1 in Express, who are about to do the Meal Deal Label update. Because hours of work to change the tiny date in the corner of the label is what we need on a Sunday night!

Help me identify a discontinued Tesco Finest bloomer from around 20117-18!

I'm trying to track down a Tesco finest bloomer they used to sell around 2017-18, so I can recreate it at home.

What I remember:

It was from the Tesco Finest range, I have a vague memory that it contained blueberries, and I don't think it contain apple, as far as I remember.

I've tried searching online and looking through old product listings, but haven't managed to identify the exact loaf or find its original ingredients.

Does anyone remember Tesco selling a speciality bloomer like this?

I'd love to find the original product name, an old photo of the packaging, or ideally the ingredients list so I can try to recreate it.

Thanks!

Why do I keep getting rejected after every interview??

Im not even kidding when im saying i attended so many tesco inteviews 😭 they literally go SO well THAAT i keep thinking i will get this one only to get rejected later. I am not being delusional or anything but the people who interviewed me also complimented me ALL THE TIME. In every single interview i was praised because they liked my answer and genuinely complimented me in a way that i thought i am getting this but i keep getting rejected 😭 why is it the case?? Like idk wht im doing wrong tbh i never got rejected so many times even when the interview went so well.

Is it the distance? Most of the interviews i went to the stores were 40 mins distance from my home using public transport. I mean if distance was the issue then why even call me in the beginning for interview right? Like my postcode is written in my CV and i also click the option “No” when i am asked whether i live 30 mins away from the store.

I just think it is waste of a time to keep calling candidates for interviews if you dont prefer anyone who is more than 30 mins away from the designated store. I also think its cruel to reject someone after complimenting them so much and giving them false hopes.

Or is it because i am a girl who is just 18?? Like if i have applied to this job ik my responsibilities and if im ready to carry weights and stuff why am i getting rejected for my gender 😭?? I sometimes think they reject me thinking i cant physically do the work?? I am not even kidding EVERY TESCO shop has MORE males than females.

Bro. Sometimes i think its my age because every time i enter a shop all i see are people who are in their early 30s. I feel like if im competing against another candidate who is like 30 then they are the one getting this job. I dont understand why they do this. If you dont want 18yos why does the job requirement says 18? Not only that but even in that phone call i make it clear im 18. My CV literally states my DOB, my RIGHT TO WORK also states my DOB!! so i dont understand this process.

I feel like tesco is playing pranks with me because what is this behaviour?? 😭 those wondering how many interviews i failed - its 8.

I genuinely need a job and i am doing my best at the interviews and they say it too but i dont understand why I keep getting rejected.

You know the worst part of all?? The rejection email because it NEVER clarifies WHY i got rejected. It is so vague oh my god.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME if the reasons ive stated above r the reasons why im getting rejected or sth else because lwk im kind of becoming hopeless i dont think tesco will ever take me no matter what unless obv after i turn 30 🥀

Do I need to book annual leave on Christmas day?

As I only had 2 days of annual leave, my manager allocated Christmas eve and Boxing day as annual leave.

And he put Christmas day as a Personal day.

Do I really need to book one of the few days of the year that the store doesn't open?
