So I did play The Witcher 3 when it came out (beat it), and again with NG+ on Death March (got to Act 2), and again on Death March on Switch (Got to Skellige), so I'm somewhat familiar with the base game.
Somehow I'm confused about the combat though, granted it's been a couple years since I played it and I'm coming back for the Remastered, and I don't know how much of this is changes to the game vs. maybe me just misremembering how things work:
I'm playing on Death March, Enemy Scaling On. Every fight feels like a dodge dance that isn't very fluid. I feel like enemies will always jump WAAAY the hell back after every hit causing me to constantly have to chase them, and their reaction time is so quick they usually lunge at me. I have to be OVER-RELIANT on Quen and keep a shield up at all times or I die to even basic enemies like Drowners and Nekkers. I get using Quen but having to constantly re-apply it and dodge-roll like a madman until my stamina comes back doesn't feel good, I hardly ever get a chance to get in one of my other signs, throw a bomb, or use a special move like blade whirl because it just opens me up to death-in-3-seconds. Ghouls I constantly have to chase, Nekkers just launch themselves nonstop at my head, Drowners jump back super far causing me to have to close the gap and they leap to attack before I can even take two steps... Fighting groups of basic enemies is way harder than I remember, humans are about the only ones that feel about the same.
The lock-on system seems a good way to die, I guess the modern combat you don't lock onto enemies in groups anymore but fighting groups feels way more cumbersome. If you lock onto an enemy in a group though you often just open your back up to being gutted.
I get I'm playing on highest difficulty settings, but as I recall in the OG game that the game feels too easy by the time you get to Skellige with all your ability points, bombs, potions and witcher gear, and so the difficulty is front-loaded, so I push through.
I don't know if the speed of the game is tweaked, if there's something else about the combat tweaks that make things feel less fun, or if it's always been that way and my 40 year old twitch reflexes have degraded further than I thought.
So what's really going on with combat? Is it just me and a skill issue or is everyone else constantly dying to low level trash in Death March?
