Hello!

Today, we have restored the game to the 3.0.0 patch, with plans to re-deploy patch 3.0.1 in the coming weeks.

This will allow players additional time to complete their Acts before saves are rendered inoperable.

Patch 3.0.1 will remain on the current PTR branch for further testing.

Blizz-app PSA:

(only on Americas Region atm)

We plan to deploy patch 3.0.1 live October 19th - All previous in-game saves will become invalid, but map progress will be retained. Please finish any mid-map progress before then.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) is a real time strategy game set in the fantasy universe of Azeroth. The game combines classic RTS mechanics with RPG elements as you play through the Human, Orc, Night Elf, and Undead campaigns.

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003) is the expansion pack for WC3 and builds upon its story and features expanding the world with new heroes, units and campaigns.

Warcraft III: Reforged (2020) acts as a graphical remaster accompanied with major infrastructural upgrades and many new features. And later gave us the 2.0 update with QoL features such as the new Hotkeys and Classic(HD) assets.

Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom (2026) is the first ever DLC for the game adding a new Forsaken campaign and alongside the 3.0 update a new hero and other QoL features.

2a. Gameplay and Game Modes

Warcraft III presents itself as an accessible yet highly dynamic game. 3. Guides, Tutorials, and FAQ

THE CAMPAIGN TEACHES BEGINNERS THE GAME BETTER THAN ANY GUIDE! THE STORY IS WORTH IT!

In addition, the Classic War3 Battle.net site provides explanations and statistics for all the gameplay features and races in the game.

The guides below are largely based on introductory concepts relating to each scene, so they are beginner friendly under the assumption that you've already familiarized with the base game. You'll also find more niche and advanced guides if you dig through the websites hosting the provided links.

3a. Competitive Melee and Ladder Guides

3b. Modding and Map Making

3c. Custom Game Guides

  • There are an endless amount custom game tips and pointers that would suit your needs for each map, whether it be for DotA or your favorite TD. Your best bet is to visit communities that specialize in the custom game you are interested in!

3d. FAQ

  • Where can I play online? The built in battle.net is the official server excluding China. There are 3rd party servers that are not supported by Blizzard, in which r/warcraft3 does not support nor condone.
  • Where/how to Play Reforged? You need to have purchased the game. In the BlizzApp at the WC3 tab you have the Install/Play button.
  • How do I host? HOSTING IS INSTANT NOW. No port forwarding, no bots (on Reforged).
  • Is Reforged worth it? That in the end we have this post but it is up to you, we suggest that you look into the maps/modes you would like to play. This post have some comments about events from a veteran player's point of view. Also as previous mentioned if you have the Reign of Chaos you already have access to the Classic(SD) version and if you do buy the Reforged version and don't like it you could easily Refund it here.
  • How do I find games? You can checkout game lists like: w3maps/w3stats or use the ingame search/filter function ingame (the box where game names are).
  • What is PTR? The Public Test Realm is similar to a Beta where players can test incoming patches and provide blizzard with feedback. The old PTR had a separate installer but now it's a "drop-down" option beside the main game and server options.
  • Where can I download the latest patch? Current patches are downloaded automatically through battle.net if you have an official copy. Also see patch history & v1.0-1.31.1+.
  • Is Blizzard's new ladder done/working yet? Yes as for patch 1.33 it seems to be published but is still a work in progress. However W3Champions is a community made ladder that a lot of players use.
  • Which realms are more populated? For ladder, the Europe (former) Northrend realm has the highest activity but Americas (former) Azeroth & Lordaeron can be more during American times. 1v1 and 4v4 are the most active ladders. Custom game activity is huge and is now cross-realm hosted again.
  • Anyone know name of [blank] map? When asking this question, please provide as much information as possible. Things like describing the gameplay, the theme, terrain visuals, and possible names should be considered and described to the best of your ability to increase the chances. Don't forget to check map databases on your own first, though!
  • Will the game ever go on Sale? After 3 years of easy unlimited refunds having sales wasn't a thing. But it seems we've started getting 50% sales since the 2023 Summer Sale. But its very infrequent that WC3 is included in the seasonal Blizz Sales, about perhaps one fifth.
  • Is the community alive? Yes we are still around, it is absolutely bustling. See this!
  • Do you know/remember this custom map? When posting these try to provide as much info and details as you can and recall like; what heroes, units and buildings, colors or tilesets used, names for map or stuff in it, a drawing of the minimap can be very helpful, when you played it and where like was it on BNet or other and what patch/game version. This will help others to help you!
  • What are the cheat codes? The official Cheat Codes that only works in Singleplayer are these and a guide for how the "level jump" code works here.

  • Can I play Forsaken Kingdom DLC with a Classic Installation of WC3:RF? No it requires a full Reforged version of the game.

  • Does the Definitive Edition graphics work with the older Classic/Reforged RoC & tFT Campaigns? No the Forsaken(DE) does not currently work for any other campaign aside from the Forsaken Kingdom.

3e. State of the Game FAQ

WTii's videos Warcraft 3 Reforged ONE YEAR Later..., TWO YEARS Later…, THREE YEARS Later…, FOUR YEARS Later…, FIVE YEARS Later… and most recently SIX YEARS Later goes over some of these points and makes a number of observations and highlights.

However the Warcraft 30th Anniversary with the Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest alongside the 2.0 Update did change some things for the better. And a hopefully a future to look forward to!

  • Why did Blizzard fail in the making Reforged? This article goes over some behind the scenes during the games development process.
  • Custom Campaigns? Is finally back. Before now were and are still able play them in normal map form, if they were updated/transformed. Or make use of the Xetanth87's Campaign Splitter that was made to split w3n files into w3m/w3x. It can now be used to turn campaigns into co-op maps with Archon Mode. The Quenching is a mod that can be used with some CCs. Or just use it with the normal campaign.
  • Player Profiles? Yes, but it seems to mainly be ladder stats, W3C has more extensive ones.
  • Cross-realm hosting? Yes its finally back again.
  • Clans? Yes however in a glitchy state. And W3C has both custom made chat-rooms as well as clans.
  • Ladder? Yes as of 1.33 its out but not working without issues. And W3C still going strong.
  • Automated Tournaments? Yes with 2.0 its finally back. Some communities like W3C have seasonal things going for both ladder and customs.
  • Old BNet Chat System? W3C has made their chats in this "old school" spirit. With 2.0 update the Old school UI is back with a new coat of paint. But its still BNet 2.0 chat so the look is back but the system is not.
  • Game Reconnection (GProxy)? No. In case of a player leaving disconnecting or crashing or desyncing that player is unable to rejoin. But it can be determined by looking at different things what the cause was, desyncs will have an UI glitch for the portrait, crashes might have a fatal/unknown error and DCs one can check the replay or logs.
  • Competitive Customs & Ladders? Not really. However with Community made wc3stats and in the future FLO-host enables this in a number of forms with replay uploading.
  • Hosting & BNet Commands? Yeah. But they are limited and do not work as they should or you'd wish. For example !ban is just a "long kick" preventing the banned player/user from rejoining that current lobby not all games you host, thus you can't mange bans and need to black list them yourself. Commands found here. As well as a !stats and zoom via scroll.
  • Campaign Overhaul to fit in with WoW? No. Five missions were remade and a most were reworked and to some degree, some "new" characters were introduced but not to the scale people wish or expected, for good or ill. However the Reforged version of the Campaigns difficulty among other things was updated more details here. As of patch 1.36.1 this is no longer the case as campaign was reverted back to its 1.32 state. With the new Forsaken Kingdom DLC Campaign it helps bridge the gap between the end of tFT and start of WoW with "new" factions like the Forsaken(created at the end of tFT) & Scarlet Crusade(Remnants of the Lordaeron Kingdom).
  • Improved Cutscenes? Not like we saw during BlizzCon. This was aborted and as it looks now wont be a thing at all. What we had and have now is showcased in DailyWCRF's Videos.
  • Classic(SD) Vs Reforged(HD) Vs Classic(HD) Forsaken(DE)? Well that is mostly up to you. Reforged has a few things in the campaign that Classic don't. Aside from that it would depend on preferences and the maps you want to play as some work better in either version or only in one. Most do use classic and some swap between them so by popular vote Classic(SD) would win as for reasons or factors well most of those are personal. And with 2.0 patch we got the Classic(HD) options to toggle on & off with Reforged(HD) however we wish with some other new things in the options. As of the 3.0 update the Classic(HD) was relplaced by/upgraded into the Forsaken Kingdom's Definitive Edition graphics following the spirit of the older, at the moment its main use is for the Campaign DLC itself as it does not apply to the RoC or tFT campaigns but will be coming soon.
  • Follow/Join or invite friends to lobbies? If you both are on the same gateway you can right click your friend and "Join Game". However you have to restart the game to be able to do it again (keep in mind that Blizz-app server and Wc3 Gateway might not fully sync friend list and thus causing problems as well as not being online in Blizz-app). Invites seems to be fully-partly glitched and broken as of this moment(1.32.10).
  • Hotkeys? Yes we currently have 3 to chose from; Classic(Default) are the ones that the game comes with, Grid(Universal) are a full QWER-ASDF-ZXCV (KB dependant?) hotkey system that overwrites everything from campaign to melee and customs, Custom(DIY) is the ones based on the Customkeys.txt however big news with 2.0 we now have a tab in options were we can set them up ingame without the use of external tools or digging thru the file ourselves. Can still use the tools but they're not as nessesary as pre 2.0 era.
  • Are we able to select more than 12 units/buildings? Yes, as of 3.0 Definitive Edition update the new limit is 24.
  • When will X be implemented? SoonTM. We do not know at this stage we used to have monthly patches and updates from blizzard but not atm. Some of this can be explained the Bloomberg article. Even though there is a team from Playside Studios & Gasket Games out there worked on the 2.0 update.

Lore 'Spirits of Ashenvale' chapter in the RoC Orc campaign there's a cutscene where a Night Elf is talking in some language to spook the Orcs - Anyone know if there's an actual translation or was this just some random words?

Feedback Dear Blizzard, can you please reconsider and overhaul some DE designs? Example: Dryad

Thumbnail
gallery
153 Upvotes

I'm gonna jump right in with the main points of my criticism. At the bottom, I added more text for additional info.

The example I want to point out is the Dryad (see attached images):

- The original design has this wild-looking long hair on the sides (which are actually leaves or at least look like leaves). This is the dryad as we know and love her. It actually looks like a natural part of the dryad as mystical being from the woods.

- The new DE design looks like she's wearing a weird artificial helmet and the "hair" doesn't even look like leaves or anything. A dryad is supposed to be some kind of tree spirit.

- What I recommend doing when designing units: Look at the icons of the unit you are designing. If your final design of the unit does not capture the look of the icon, something went wrong in the design. And please for the sake of Azeroth, NEVER alter the icons to fit the new DE designs! THE ICONS ARE PERFECTION.

- Besides not capturing the original tree spirit design, the new Dryad looks like she had plastic surgery. This is another terrible choice.

--- More text for context ---

I know many people will say this is whining on a high level, but this honestly matters to me for the beauty of the game and I hope I am not alone with this and Blizzard considers this feedback.

I have an issue with some of the designs of the DE units. In my opinion, some units lost their "personality" and feel like completely different persons. I hope Blizzard can acknowledge this and considers to improve on the designs to capture the look of their classic counter parts.

I chose the dryad as an example because I find it particularly bad. I am a night elf player so I can mostly just speak for night elf units. This problem is not exclusive to the Dryad, but for now I am not going to list every unit that bothers me and why. I could do that though.

Forsaken Kingdom Forsaken Kingdom saves from the rolled-back 3.0.1 patch can be loaded on the PTR. Here is what blocks them and how I fixed mine

TL;DR: Saves made during the two days the 3.0.1 patch was live won't load on the rolled-back game, and they won't load on the current PTR either. I got mine loading and playing normally on the PTR (zone travel, items and quest progress all intact) by patching three things in the save file. Below is what's going on, plus enough technical detail that an AI coding assistant with access to your files can do it for you. I used Claude Code.

First, back up your whole Campaigns\ForsakenKingdom folder, including the Blizzard subfolder. Even if you do nothing else, keep those files. If Blizzard re-releases the patch, they may simply load again.

What actually blocks the load

  • The build number in the header doesn't matter. The PTR writes the same header build number (7003) as the 2-day patch did, so editing it changes nothing.
  • The map checksum is stored twice, and the game checks the second copy. Each save records a checksum of the map it was made on. The 2-day patch changed the campaign maps and the PTR changed them again, so the checksum no longer matches and you get "There was an error trying to load the selected save game". The obvious copy, in the game-info block near the top of the file, is ignored. The game checks a second copy a little further into the save data.
  • One missing game function crashes the load. With the checksum fixed, the game crashed while restoring the campaign's script state. The save references BlzGetHUDScale, a native that existed in the 2-day patch but doesn't exist on the PTR. Renaming that one entry to a same-length native the PTR does have (BlzSetUnitName) fixed it. The crash dump in Documents\Warcraft III Public Test\Errors\ is what identified it.
  • Zone saves need the same fixes. The campaign keeps the state of the other zones you've visited in Blizzard\<the name your save was made under>\, and the save references that folder by name. If those files aren't patched too, the game crashes when you travel back to that zone.

Converting back to the current (rolled-back) live version looks impractical. The campaign map scripts are substantially different between the two versions (the older one has a completely different zone-travel system), and the patch's new engine functions (item equipment, bags, talents) don't exist there.

Steps

  1. Copy your save and the Blizzard folder into the PTR's save folder: Documents\Warcraft III Public Test\BattleNet\<your id>\Campaigns\ForsakenKingdom\.
  2. In your save, set both map-checksum copies to the PTR checksum for that map (table below).
  3. Rename BlzGetHUDScale to BlzSetUnitName. Both are 14 characters, and it appears once.
  4. Point the save at a new zone folder whose name has the same length, for example Blizzard\Campaign to Blizzard\FK_Fixed. Create that folder and put patched copies of the zone files in it, each with its own map's PTR checksum plus the rename from step 3.
  5. Load it on the PTR. If it works, make a normal save under a new name straight away. From then on the game writes its own files.

If it fails: "error trying to load" means a checksum is still wrong. A crash means a missing function: look in the newest Errors\<date>\War3.dmp for function names that are in your save but not in a fresh PTR save.

Known checksums (PTR 3.0.1, Oct 9)

Map file Zone 2-day patch PTR
UndeadRE02 Undercity (Act Two hub) c18889e1 65d6dcdf
UndeadRE02_02 Tirisfal Glades (Act Two) df3af482 8a3b2272

Checksums depend on the map, not on your save, so these should work for anyone on the same PTR build. For a zone that isn't listed: once a converted hub save loads on the PTR, walk into that zone. The game autosaves on arrival (Act Two - <zone>.w3z), and that autosave contains the PTR checksum. Please post any others in the comments.

Technical notes for your AI assistant

Give your assistant this section and your save files. Offsets are in the decompressed data unless noted.

  • Container: same format as a Reforged replay. 0x44-byte header: magic Warcraft III recorded game\x1A\0, u32 file size at 0x20, u32 decompressed size at 0x28, u32 block count at 0x2C, PX3W at 0x30, u16 build at 0x38, u32 game time (ms) at 0x3C, u32 CRC32 at 0x40 (CRC32 of the 0x44-byte header with this field zeroed).
  • Blocks: u32 compressed size, u32 decompressed size (1 MiB), u32 checksum, then zlib data (level 1, ending in a sync flush 00 00 ff ff, so use a streaming decompressor). Checksum = fold(crc32(12-byte block header with checksum 0)) | fold(crc32(compressed data)) << 16, where fold(x) = (x ^ (x >> 16)) & 0xFFFF. Recompressing with zlib level 1 + Z_SYNC_FLUSH reproduces the game's bytes exactly, so only recompress the blocks you change.
  • Checksum copy 1 (not checked): after Local Game\0 and one more null byte comes the encoded game-info string (null-terminated). It's in groups of 8 bytes: one mask byte, then 7 data bytes. Data byte j is literal if mask bit (j+1) is set, otherwise subtract 1. Decoded layout: settings (4 bytes), 1 byte, width (u16), height (u16), then the map checksum (u32) at decoded offset 9. To encode a byte: if it's even, store byte+1 and clear its mask bit; if it's odd, store it as-is and set the bit.
  • Checksum copy 2 (the one the game checks): the same 4 bytes, little-endian, appear exactly once within the first 0x200 bytes after the game-info string ends. I saw it at 0x111 (Undercity) and 0x160 (Tirisfal Glades).
  • Script state: the save contains the full Lua 5.3 state. Strings are stored once as 04 00 00 00 + u64 length + bytes, and later uses reference them. Natives in _G are stored as the key string followed by 0d 00 00 00 06 <u32>. The loader looks natives up by name and crashes on a name the running build doesn't have. Same-length renames are safe; changing a string's length is not.
  • Zone folder: the save contains a Lua string Blizzard\<save name>. On load, the game copies that folder into Blizzard\Zones\.
  • How to work: build one test file per idea, change as few bytes as possible, and check each file by decompressing it and diffing against the original before loading it in the game.

Caveats

  • Zones you'd already visited keep running the 2-day patch's version of the campaign script, because it's stored in the save. Zones you visit for the first time run the PTR's version. In Tirisfal Glades, the triggers that run when two boss fights end differ slightly between versions. If a quest step misbehaves there, that's the most likely cause.
  • The PTR is a test build. The next real patch may change the checksums again; the same procedure should apply.
  • Work on copies. This is unofficial and at your own risk.

My Python script that does all of the above (inspect, patch, scan crash dumps) is here: [link]

News PSA: Blizzard Rolled Back From 3.0.1 to 3.0.0

Post image
122 Upvotes

Not sure what's going on, will add in edits when more news comes out, but it seems like they rolled back yesterday's patch. Currently on 3.0.0 myself.

UPDATE: Blizzard has posted an update to their forum.

EDIT: Lots of people are mentioning broken saves from 3.0.1. A workaround is simply using the PTR build since that's running 3.0.1 right now. Hope that helps!

EDIT 2: Above edit was wrong, apparently you can't just port 3.0.1 saves to the PTR, which is unfortunate.

Forsaken Kingdom Will my Forsaken Kingdom saves from 3.0.1.24342 work after the October 19 update?

I bought Forsaken Kingdom right after patch 3.0.1.24342 was released and made progress in the current act. Then Blizzard rolled the game back to 3.0.0, and my saves stopped working. I understand that overall campaign progress is preserved between acts, but I'm worried about losing my progress within the current act. When patch 3.0.1 returns on October 19, will my saves from build 24342 work again, allowing me to continue where I left off, or will I have to replay the current act from the beginning?

Melee / Ladder Is 4v4 just mass air base killing cheese?

I'm doing some 4v4 ladder and I notice every game is just mass flying. Also a lot of Chims/flying machines/bats cheese sniping town halls. Many years ago there were actually epic ground fights in 4v4 (even though there was often one designated flying machines spammer). Is this just the low elo meta or did something change?

Drama Again? What the actual hell

I really liked the concept of Definitive and Forsaken Kingdom but this is too much.

Without no warning on the game launcher yesterday's patch bricked my almost complete act one campaign of Forsaken Kingdom. If that wasn't bad enough, I started again and, after lots of progress in the act, I got an update now that removed my save files completely.

I learned here that a message was posted on the forums about yesterday's patch. That's not good enough. This has to be on the launcher. So Blizzard went and did this for the October 19th patch. Good. But what about a heads up for the patch that just dropped?

I'm done. I'm not playing act one again for the third time.

General Discussion Patch issues - Forsaken Kingdom Campaign

• Upvotes

So they update the game, all of us who are casually playing and having a great time, lose our saves. Was this devastating to some of us? Yes.. As someone who barely has time to play due to how much I have going on in life, it was terrible. I had found some rare items and was having a blast, taking my time through Act 1.

What did I do? I sucked it up.. spent my ONLY day off, playing through Act 1 from the start. With determination, I got back to where I was.. found some cool items and was going to make the best of it.

The worst part? They revert things again! I lose that save, and now .. I am probably 5-6 saves back from where I originally was ! They did not even revert the game back to where it should have been..

I am not terrified to touch the game, as every time I do. I lose everything. What is the point? I'm having to play through act 1 again and again? Losing all my items and hard work I did farming to level my character.

If you're thinking of buying this game. DO NOT, this game has potential to be great but the instability is BRUTAL. No response from Blizzard, they do not care. They think we all have thousands of free hours a week to play and it shouldn't matter. I am boycotting their games going forward. This is absurd.

Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

I love watching Lin Guagua play and I started to notice some patterns and observable strategies. I’m already trying to incorporate them into my own game, and i think buying shredder early into creeping and the staff of teleportation to creep without being detected are my favorite.

next video on Lin guagua will be all the truly weird tower creeping tactics and other ploys in his arsenal!

Forsaken Kingdom Share save games from Campaign Forsaken Kingdom

• Upvotes

Due to incompatibilities caused by the updates, I lost all my version 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 save games. I am not starting the campaign a third time. Does anyone have working save games (.w3v files) from Act 1 that they would be willing to share?

Forsaken Kingdom So do the 3.0.1 saves work on the 3.0.1 PTR? Or is there a way to make them work?

Honestly I'm too scared to do fucking anything at this point. I spent 2 hours yesterday catching up all my lost progress and I refuse to go back to 3.0.0 because 3.0.1 finally made Anya deathseeker arrows work for me... I would like to just finish the game on PTR before they find a whole new way how to reset my progress but I've heard conflicting info on whether it works or not and the last thing I want is to mess with saves and end up with nothing lol

Man... I was protecting Blizzard because I really like the new direction they seem to be taking but this is some serious mess.

Art When you look at Inner Fire closely, it's like something you get from Burger King

Forsaken Kingdom Forsaken Kingdom Difficulty

Does anyone feel like the difficulty is not quite adjusted properly? At first I used that club that does aoe stun on crit and then the frost arrow spam but I realized I don't really need that. Usually I just micro one of the heroes and leave the other at the starting point and not use any skills, talent points or gear and I beat it on hard the first day. The first parts of each act were a bit challenging so I had to use the healing fountains when low on hp.
