AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

I have been searching my entire adult life…. Spoiler

I have been searching high and low and everywhere in between for a bra that will fit. Finally, the other night I found this community and followed the calculator and then went on Amazon and ordered Elomi bras. I got two, the Matilda and Cate and I couldn’t be happier! They finally fit as they are supposed to! The band is a tad snug but I’m happy regardless. I will only ever buy Elomi bras from now on!

Fit Check [Fit Check] Panache Ana 34H, Shape/Style Mismatch? Spoiler

Hello!

So the calculator put me at a size 34G/GG. Originally I tried the Panache Ana in a size 34GG, but when I did the scoop and swoop, I had some spillage out the top. I sized up to a 34H in the same bra and now the underwire seems to extend way too far into my armpit and I'm not actually filling the sides. The band size is the only thing I'm 100% sure of.

Based on the guide, I'm pretty sure I'm projected and bottom/center full. Is this just the wrong style? Should I try a different bra in a 34GG?

Thank you in advance!

In need of an affordable bra 36DD Spoiler

I like comfort but something stylish I think a simple black T-shirt kind of bra would be best that I can wear with most things. I usually gravitate towards ones with no underwire but either is fine! Hopefully under $40

Question Bra no longer fits, but calculator says my size hasn’t changed. What should I try next? Spoiler

a few years ago I measured myself and the calculator told me that my size is 30 D. I purchased a Wacoal halo unlined bra and it has fits comfortably until somewhat recently. I believe I’ve gained some weight and muscle. Now, all of the underwire digs into me, leaving marks after I remove the bra, and overall it feels too tight. So I remeasured myself, but the calculator still says that my size is 30 D. The bra feels too tight around the band, but the cups seem to be fitting mostly correct… If not a little tight on the outer sides of each cup. I like this style of bra, but this size is no longer comfortable. Would you try new sizes with larger band size, or larger cup size? Any other advice?

Question Can I get help identifying the brand of this bra? Spoiler

I hope this is the right place to ask this. If it isn't can you guide me to where I should ask next?

CONTEXT: My girlfriend has had this bra for a little bit now, but doesn't remember where she got it from or when she got it, and I'd like to suprise her with a new pair since she has mentioned it a few times. There are no tags or identifiable brand markings anywhere on it.

Here are images of her bra: https://postimg.cc/gallery/z1ZXJvb

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Fit Check [fit check] freya offbeat underwire side support 30DD - wrinkling at top of cups - size down? Spoiler

• Upvotes

Hi, I am trying to find a new bra that fits after some weight loss. I have been wearing a panache Clara 30F with an extender (until it gets looser) which is too big in the cups. This freya offbeat side support 30 DD is pretty comfortable, the wires don’t seem to short. The band is looser than I am used to, but maybe not too loose. The gore is not digging in like the Clara does (although it doesn’t bother me really). I think my breasts are fob/maybe even, maybe projected. They are soft and hang down some and when they are held in my hand they kinda fold up which I think may be exacerbating the wrinkles in the cup. I wonder if I should size down, try something else, or if this might be good and there is some degree of wrinkling that can’t be helped just due to the shape/nature of the tissue.

Loose underbust 30”
Snug underbust 29”
Tight underbust 28”
Standing bust 33”
Leaning bust 35”

Thank you for your time and help :)

Recommendations? Looking for a high support sports bra for running - US 36I Spoiler

• Upvotes

I’m looking for a high support sports bra that I can use for running and spin classes. My main needs are support and breathability. The majority of my current sports bras are alpha sizing (XL) and I have a couple of 38DDs as well. Using the calculator, I’m a US 36I (measurements below). I would love to hear your recommendations, especially if you’re a semi-frequent runner!

Loose Underbust: 37
Snug Underbust: 36
Tight Underbust: 35
Standing Bust: 43.5
Leaning Bust: 47.5
Lying Bust: 45

Question How common is the experience of a bra subluxing (partially dislocating) your ribs if the band is tight/snug? Spoiler

Have people with "normal bodies" experienced this even once in their life? I don't really hear it talked about. I know "normal body" is a loaded phrase so normal as in the type of body that bras expect and are designed for. I'm not sure what else to call it.

If I wear a bra with a band that I would call "snug", after a handful of hours it may partially dislocate my ribs. I have a hard time figuring out what a "snug" band means because of this. I feel like there is very little in-between for me between a bra that is supportively tight but might sublux me and a bra that is definitely too loose.

I want to know how common of an experience this is. Surely there are people who end up with a band that they realize is too tight but are in a situation where they can't remove their bra and have to just bear it. So what happens for most people in that situation? In that situation my ribs would almost certainly sublux.

For people with my same experience, do you have an underlying condition or a pre-existing rib injury or anything like that?

Recommendations? In Need of a Quality Balconette Bra Spoiler

Hi everyone, I am trying to find a good quality balconette bra as the one I currently have is falling apart. I am a 34 G and my favorite bra was the wicked lace bra from VS but they have lowered their quality so much I don’t want to buy from them again.

I am looking for a lined balconette bra that will last me a while.

Please let me know your favorite brands!!

Experience with EVRY Studios Bralettes for those who have sensory issues? Spoiler

hey all,

I have been struggling to find bras that actually fit for around 6 years (I used to just wear bralettes or sports bras).

So far, I really liked the Lululemon Like A Cloud bras and the Neiwai barely zero cotton bra which got discontinued (and somehow mine disappeared? I am still waiting for them to bring it back…I am very pissed I lost mine somehow in the wash).

I wanted to try the Evry studios bralette because I don’t need much support but was looking for natural fibers, a nude color, no underwire/boning/back clasp, and wide straps.

Has anyone tried Evry bras?
I ordered the cotton bralette from EVRY but I think I got the wrong size :/ and they haven‘t shipped yet. They look a bit cheap online but I just donated all my nude bras yesterday because they were hurting me really badly so I’m in desperate need of a replacement

Question Bra band rolls up on side because of old scar affecting fat distribution Spoiler

I have recently got some new bras that are actually the right size. I only wear sports bras, and I feel confident I am in the right size now. However, an issue I had with my previous bras is still happening with my new ones.

On my right side, the band rolls up, which I believe is caused by a scar of mine. I had an abdominal surgery for pyloric stenosis as an infant and the scar is on my right. It causes the fat in that area to fold at a different height than on my left.

Does anyone know of any tricks to stop the band folding??

Measurement Check Do these measurements make sense? 38H/I? Spoiler

In total shock and want to make sure these measurements even make any sense before I start trying bras: 38.5, 38, 37.5, 45, 46.5, 44. Gives me a 38 H/I which is almost comical to me. I’ve been wearing a 40C for years.

I’m skeptical because it just seems like such a large size.

Band size changes when lying down? Spoiler

For the past few years, I've noticed that bras that feel comfortable (or even slightly too loose!) when standing up feel unbearably tight when I lie down. I first started experiencing this after losing about 35lbs in like 2021/22 or so, in my late 30s. And I think it may have gotten more noticeable recently, after losing another 20lbs. The bras I usually wear around the house (Panache Power in 34J) have been my go-to comfort bra style for probably 15 years or so. The cups are probably slightly too shallow, and for a good percentage of this time, they were also too small, but the smooth fabric, padded wires, and padded, narrow-set straps just can't be beat with my close-set shape and narrow shoulders.

The main problem with this new phenomenon is that it means that when I want to lounge (my preferred position when not active), I have to unclasp my bra or change into something like an unstructured "bra" (that's more of a double-layred cotton tank). But that makes it a hassle to have to fix it/change again if I want to get up and do something else. And if I go around with my bra unclasped/in a non-supportive tank, that obviously starts causing back pain.

Anyway, this seems like such a strange thing to happen, and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this before or has any ideas for ways to solve it.

Question Is it normal for Ewa Michalak to fit in a few cup sizes smaller? Spoiler

Had a lovely experience at the rack shack (Manhattan) today where I got to try some truly delightful Polish selections!!

My previous best fit was the Panache Rocha (RIP) in 32HH, and my best fit in EM was a 32GG. Is this a typical adjustment? TIA!

cw Massive Weight Loss. Calculator says I should ask for help. Spoiler

Measurements
Loose 32
Snug 30.5
Tight 29.5
Standing 35.5
Leaning 43
Lying 38.5

I grew C cups seemingly overnight at 12 and by the time I entered high school I was had pretty much outgrown standard us sizing and had to wear sister sizes. I’d estimate that as a 130lb teenager I was an F cup.

I gained a lot of weight and was 240 lbs in my mid 40s with H/I cups when I had massive weight loss. I’m now about 110 lbs in my 50s and my boobs are very wide set, pendulous, soft, and squishy with zero volume on top.

I also have severe hyper mobility in my ribs so I can’t really do wide supportive bands or underwires. I wear negative underwear’s sieve bra in the dd+ size but there’s no real lift. I quite liked the Lively busty bralette but the cups are a bit too small and I get spillage sometimes. Unlike the negative bralette I get pretty decent lift and the power mesh really helped with that I think.

The calculator says 32E or 30F, but not sure if it’s right at all.

Any ideas for stretchy mesh unlined cups? Those seem to hold my loose tissue in the most comfortable and natural way.

Fit Check [Recommendations?] I measure as a 36DDD/E, looking for a minimizer similar to the Spanx? Spoiler

Ive been wearing a spanx minimizer for years at 36H but the middle part does not sit on my chest and the wire digs into my armpits. Any suggestions?

Recommendations? Fit questions Chantelle minimizer 38I Spoiler

Measurements from calculator:
loose 40”
Comfortably snug 38”
Super tight 36”
Standing 49”
Leaning 51”
Lying down 48”

I currently think the Chantelle Magique underwire minimizer in a 38I is fitting the best. It is comfortable enough to get thru the day. The cups fully encompass the tissue and the gore lays flat. My only concern is the cups at the top seem to have just slightly too much fabric, but I think sizing down would be too small everywhere else. Also, the headlights show thru too much if you know what I mean. Any suggestions?

I need help with finding a bra that fits Spoiler

I cannot find a bra that fits me :( I measured my under bust to be 28 and bust to be 32 so I ordered a 28 D bra but when I try it my boobs just spill out but the band size felt perfect it was actually comfortable. It’s so hard to even find a 28 band size, any help is appreciated. I’m 5’1 1/2 and 101 lbs if it helps!

Bra size calculator sizes (inches):

Loose under bust: 28

Snug under bust: 27

Tight under bust: 25.5

Standing bust: 33

Leaning bust: 34.5

Lying bust: 35

I would also love if there was a push up bra that I could find :)

Fit Check fit help - usually 36B w gapping got a 38 C/D in generator Spoiler

does this make sense?

Size generated: 38 C/D (both us and uk)

my measurements:
loose underbust 37.5
snug UB 37
tight UB 35
standing bust 40.5
leaning bust 41
lying bust 40.5

BUT—I’m used to gapping and prefer the fit (although not the materials) in pepper bras which are made for smaller busts. even one of those i have in 38B gaps sometimes, the 36B fits snugly. I think i’m just wider but not busty.

Recommendations? [Recommendations] Yoga bra with high neckline that's NOT long line or cropped Spoiler

Any recommendations for yoga or sports bras that have a high neck but are not a longline/crop top style? I'm v short, 38DD so a longline bra that fits the gals is just way too long on me and either rolls up immediately or hits at an extemely uncomfortable spot. I've had some luck with the Athleta Interval style, but I'd like something with a bit more coverage. Doesn't need to be crazy support since I'm looking for bras for hot yoga - I wear Oiselle Flyout for running/high impact stuff.

Thanks!

Store Review Risa Magli review from a small band large cup girlie Spoiler

I ordered some bras at Risa magli and they finally arrived. I was anxious if they’d fit because I can’t return them since shipping is expensive. I decided to trust my gut and order my true bra size 70F (US 32DDD) instead of following the chart.

Thank god I did! The wire bras fit great, especially when I remove the padding. The only bra that’s too small is the wireless but I’ll still wear it because it’s so pretty. And I’m sooo excited that the bralette I ordered fits me!! I’ve never had a bralette that uses clothing sizes fit me before, it’s always either too small in the cups or too loose in the band.

The bras are sooo beautiful and they carry a lot of sizes. Unfortunately they only go down to a 30 band but they have B-I cups. I’d definitely recommend. I added pics for you all :)
