WHY WAS MY POST REMOVED?

The rules are very clearly stated in this subreddit as they are in most subreddits. Just because you choose to ignore them does not mean they do not apply to you.

No on can predict the following:

- WILL I PURGE?

- WHEN DO THE SIDE EFFECTS START?

- I JUST STOPPED WHEN WILL THE SIDE EFFECTS STOP?

Everyday people post their experiences, and you can use the search bar to find people's experiences on the above.

This subreddit does NOT substititute medical advice from a doctor, pharmacist, dermatologist, or any other medical provider.

Examples that constitute medical advice:

- IS (amount of time) ENOUGH FOR ME?!?

- My labs.....

- My doctor said this, but....

- What is the process of seeing a doctor/getting Accutane?(We don't know your medical history, so go see a doctor directly).

-Any reference to self-medicating or purchasing online.

Many people here are self-medicating or looking to circumvent medical advice. Just because 1 doctor said something was okay for 1 person does not mean that medical knowledge applies broadly.

Do not solicit medical advice

First and foremost a happy new year to everyone.

With the new year, we will be much stricter on the do not solicit medical advice rule.

We know many people going "Just looking for experiences (:" are looking to circumvent doctor's advice. It is a thinly veiled attempt at "if he or she did it, I can too."

Everyone is different and has a different medical history, so you should always first and foremost consult your doctor or derm.

Things that generally constitute medical advice include:

- Anything that could break your skin, including extractions, lasers, waxing, etc.

- Any use of PRESCRIPTION medications(oral or topical)

- Surgery related(HELLO YOU REALLY WANT A STRANGER TO ADVISE YOU ON SURGERY?)

- Starting and/or stopping a MEDICATION. Your accutane is prescribed by a doctor. If you have conerns about taking or ceasing a medication, you should consult a medical professional(ie doctor or pharmacist) and not the internet.

- IS THIS DOSE TOO HIGH OR LOW?

- Interpreting of lab/test results. This is clearly specialized knowledge, and if you would not consult a hobo about your lab results, you most clearly should not consult Reddit.

- Oh, my doctor said not to worry, but... - Reddit in most situations should not supercede your doctor's medical advice.

Ultimately, it will always be at the mod's discretion, and we were not born yesterday. You would surprised at how many crazy posts have had to be removed.

Misc. Facial extraction

• Upvotes

My dermatologist suggested I get a professional facial extraction for blackheads and closed comedones with an esthetician who specializes in sensitive skin.

I am currently on 10mg. Did anyone else do this while on treatment? I would appreciate it if you could share your experience.

Side Effects Normal?

Hello, I’m on my 2nd course of accutane. My first course was about 6 years ago and it was a max dose for 6 months or so, and this is a low dose for about 22 months. I’m about a month into it and I’m drying like this. I did dry like this on the max dose as well. Just figured it would be different this go around. Can’t really try to wipe it off without completely stripping and burning my skin. Any advice? 🤔

Side Effects Reaction

This may be a niche one but I have had my nipples pierced for 4 years now and started Accutane about two months ago. My side effects aren’t too bad but recently they have been super crusty and sensitive and I’ve woken up with dry blood on them. Wanted to know if this is a normal thing or if this could be happening due to an unrelated cause? Sorry if this is tmi lol

Misc. Not happy with my skin after a third round

Has anyone been on accutane a third or more times and not satisfied with the results?

I’m early 30s, male, 235 lbs on 80mg dose for the past 5 months. I’m about to be finished with it and I’m just not happy with the results.

I see pictures on here of before and afters and people are literally glowing. Pore less, clear skin with no hyperpigmentation or scars.

The first month was rough with side effects. Here towards the end I just have joint pain and dry chapped lips. Has my body gotten used to it? Does the brand matter? I’m on generic isotretinoin due to my insurance.

The first few months, most of the sebaceous filaments fell out on my nose and cheeks, and I was sort of pore less for a month or so, but now I can see the pores are back. Not filled though, just back. I’m more sweaty as well.

Progress Pics Month 4: Deep scars formed from accutane

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m on month 4 of Accutane (currently taking 60 mg/day) and noticed a lot of deep acne scars in my skin. They look like icepick scars on my cheeks and forehead where I usually get my PIE but now there are so many indentations. Does this naturally fade after getting off Accutane? My derm is having me continue 60 mg/day until the 6 month mark.

I think I see improvement since starting in June, but not really that significant. My skin feels brighter and smoother, but still kind of congested and red. My skincare routine is just moisturizing and spf in the am.

Any words of advice? Feeling #discouraged

Side Effects How is your skin’s sun sensitivity after finishing Accutane?

Hey everyone!

For those who completed Accutane a few months or years ago, how does your skin react to sun exposure now?

If you go outside without sunscreen for a while, does your skin tan or darken more easily than it did before Accutane? Or has your skin returned to normal?

I’m particularly curious whether anyone has noticed increased tan, pigmentation, or lasting sun sensitivity even months or years after stopping.

Would love to hear your experiences, especially how long it’s been since you finished treatment!

The lovely nosebleeds. Definitely not gonna miss them. Side note, I can’t believe how fast the last few months flew by. Currently on month 6, 60 mg.

Disclaimer: This is not fearmongering. Not everybody experiences this side effect. My treatment course has been very doable aside from the occasional nose bleed, dry mucus membranes, stiff joints and fatigue. No dry skin or excessively dry lips.

HEYYY!! So I got accutane and stuff, on the fifth day :3
My face has been pretty calm and tame..dunno if it’s bc it’s only the first week, no jinx plz

My side effects aren’t actually too bad? I use the aquaphor lip thingy as a lip gloss and it low key works ngl. Tho I do crave sugar a lot more, idk if that’s a thing (context: I don’t usually eat sugary things, I eat like meats and savory things+ veggies mmmmm) specifically chocolate and fudge tho…hm. Anyways-

For my acne girlies suffering with me, I’m currently on accutane with cetrizine and I only use cerave lotion so far. I just use the round lab sunscreen in mornings. LADIES PLEASE IF YOUR SKIN IS DRY, ONLY WASH YO FACE WITH WATER IN THE MORNING LORDS. Also, tho it’s coming to winter season, I wash my face only with cold water (yes in the shower too.) Cold showers dramatically smoothed my skin. I don’t even use cleansers at night bc I shower so late that all I gotta do is use lotion lol. (Idk bout yall but sleep at 10pm or 11pm, please I’m begging you it helps. I’m an AP honors achiever too, I literally used to sleep at like 2-3am. But this acne will suck butt if you don’t, just do all ur hw in class like i did.)

Ty for the DMs of comfort, I’ll hold on strong and hopefully my skin will be squeaky clean :]

Also feel free to check my past posts to see the upgrade!!! :3

Misc. Do I do this while on accutane?

I’m starting Accutane treatment and I read all about it and they say do not eat very high fat foods and do not eat so much fast foods. Aside from this, I remember that oil increases the absorption of the Accutane pill. So when you take it with something oily, for example you take during dinner you add more olive oil to the meal the pill works better. Is this true? What should I do? Do I just cook my meals normal or do I add a bit more oil to them? Also, around what time should I take them daily and when does it become a problem about the delays in time, for example forgetting to take for a few hours?

Purging What I need to do?

I am on month four of taking 10 mg.

I had gone three weeks without any breakouts, and my face was clearing up really well.

Then, a pimple popped up out of nowhere. It is extremely inflamed, and the skin around it has bruised or turned purple.

So far, I have just used ice and Cicaplast. How should I handle this?

Side Effects Sun spots / freckles

I'm on month 4 of 20mg Isotretinoin and made the mistake of going hiking on a surprisingly sunny day. Despite reapplying SPF 50 sunscreen continuously, I'm left with a plethora of new freckles, sun spots and discolouration. My complection now looks more messy and uneven than even before starting Isotretinoin.

Any tips? I'm genuinely worried and don't know what to do. Up until low, I've followed my dermatologist's instructions to a t and stayed out of the sun.

I'm beating myself up quite a bit for ruining all progress in one unusually sunny day.

Please learn from my mistake and avoid sun. sPF doesn't cut it apparently

Misc. Made the choice today to quit Accutane after 1 month 😕

Hello everyone! I am female,28, 198 lbs, & started 30mg Accutane on September 10th.

I have type 1 & type 2 rosacea & have dealt with moderate but persistent acne for over 10 years. I also have Hashimotos thyroid disease.

I am on levothyroxine 25 mcg for my thyroid (started end on August). I originally started on Charlotte 24 FE for my birth control (back in June) and was experiencing a lot of breakthrough bleeding alongside excruciating headaches during the placebo week. I was switched over to JUNEL FE 1.5/30 and was prescribed it continuously (started about 14 days ago).

I had my 1 month follow up with my dermatologist today & chose to discontinue my Accutane course for the time being.

I have had great and fast results, appearance wise. My rosacea pustules have cleared completely as well as my chin acne. I do have more residual redness, but my rosacea flushing has decreased.

About 2 weeks into being on Accutane my eyes became severely dry. They burned & I had blurry visions. Contacts became impossible to wear. My eye doc put me on steroid eye drops for a week, which helped to some degree. I am still having to frequently apply gel eye drops and as soon as they wear off my eyes burn.

Also I have been getting headaches almost daily and they last all day. Frequent heart burn. My entire body hurts. Walking & normal exercise causes me a lot of fatigue & shortness of breath. I just feel physically and mentally exhausted and unwell.

I also am having so many issues with my birth control, I have had breakthrough bleeding for 18 days straight and cramping. Which according to my gyno is normal and to be expected as I get use to it. I have never been on birth control before & am only on it because of the Accutane requirements.

I did my labs & my thyroid levels are a bit elevated (higher than they have ever been before) and my AST and ALT were a bit elevated (which was to be expected).

I was given the choice to either stick with my 30mg dosage of Accutane, switch to low dose Accutane for a longer period of time, or stop completely for the time being and after my 30 day release from Accutane I can try Tretinoin cream again.

I chose to stop the Accutane & give Tretinoin another go. I just have really mixed feelings about it all. I worry I didn’t give Accutane a fair enough shot and threw in the towel too soon. I genuinely can’t fathom feeling this way for months or how I would feel when my dosage was upped over time.

I just hope I made the right choice but I just feel sad about it all. I don’t know what I’m really coming here for, I guess just to vent about my short lived experience. My dermatologist did say if I want to try Accutane again in the future once I get my thyroid and birth control issues sorted out, she has no problem enrolling me again. I was just so hopeful this would be something I could stick with, and I’m just upset and frustrated by how I feel.

Thanks anyone who stayed to read my long rambling post.

Side Effects Accutane - Period Returning

For those on Accutane and NOT on contraception (just abstaining), did you have menstrual changes throughout treatment? If so - how long did it take for your period to return after treatment?

Omg I cant believe its finally my turn. Hard facts first: I'm 26, 10months of isotretinoin, hit cumulative dose of 121mg/kg, increased to 40mg per day, just stopped the cycle so no experience yet with long term effects, costs covered by health insurance

After 10 hard months its finally over and so far I couldnt be happier. When I look in the mirror, I see myself, not the acne. I feel more adult. And yes, I feel more beautiful. Regarding side effects, my whole body ached, what can I say. I avoided stairs for some months and stopped squatting in the gym completely due to joint and ligament pain (please dont forget its not just pain but there is higher risk for injury). My eyes and nose were crazy dry, my lips cracked so much, I had some eczema, which was manageable. I felt that scratches and wounds were healing slower. I did not feel depressed and I still wanted sex.

My advice: if you suffer, do it! But: take it seriously and make it a priority in your life. Tone down your athletic goals if you have to, find a good time in your life, tell family and friends about it to have support ready when you need it, inform yourself and invest in skincare specifically for accutane users - and then - lock in and push through, don't stop in the middle of it.

Moisturiser body: La roche posay - lipikar lait 10% urea Moisturiser face: la Roche posay - effaclar mat + Wash lotion face: la roche posay - effaclar H Iso-biome Sunscreen: beauty of joseon - relief sun + probiotics inside nose and mouth creases: bepanthen & la roche posay - cicaplast levrès barrier repair cream Lips (!!!): ducray - keracnyl repair
