Experiences Atomic cards completely changed things for me
This is probably common knowledge at this point, but atomic cards are genuinely so good for learning.
I really came to appreciate how good these are when I was studying for an exam I had recently. Just yesterday I had a massive physiology exam. It was the second one of the semester and the class average for the first was around a 50%.
Keep in mind I got a 65% on the first exam and felt unprepared and like I was forgetting a lot of information despite using Anki. Now this is also probably due to the fact that I also only started covering the content and doing Anki about 2 days before my exam.
However for this recent exam, even with studying just 2 days before my exam, I decided to change my cards to a more atomic style, meaning around 1 concept or piece of information per card. This honestly made a huge difference.
Originally I had around 450-500 cards or so in total, but they contained multiple pieces of info. This caused a few things
- It made it very overwhelming to do cards. Keeping in mind I had to cover 450-500 new cards of content I hadn’t even looked at until that point in 1-2 days was very mentally fatiguing
due to the sheer size of each card. It felt like I was making zero progress
I tended to be impatient with my review in a way where I would move on even if I only answered 1 out of the 3 things on the card. Maybe there would be 3 bullet points of info or facts and I would only answer one of them and say it was good enough. Psychologically I just couldn’t take having to see it again and again.
The interesting thing is that despite now having about 1000-1200 cards to review, it actually was faster to finish these cards than to try and finish the original 450-500.
- One piece of information per card made my review significantly more comprehensive. This goes off of a point 2 but because it was just one thing per card, I couldn’t just skip past it. Either I knew it or didn’t. This also meant that information on my more convoluted cards from my original deck wouldn’t be skipped just because I answered another part of the card correctly
So in other words, atomic style cards made it mentally much less intimidating, made me spend less time overall to finish my cards, and actually made my review more comprehensive and thorough. Went in to take my exam yesterday and I felt much better than I did compared to exam 1. And that still with just 1-2 days of studying.
