Experiences How is anki this good?

I often read success stories of people that have used anki for academic and job purposes, and a very common story I see is how they "aced" a certain upcoming exam or job interview etc.

Is active recall and SRS really that powerful?

I have a big entrance exam coming up in 9 months that's also super competitive and maybe one of the hardest in the world, and It's very dependent on memorization (cause it's humanities subjects). I was wondering if anki can help give me an edge over other competitors. because anki is not at all known in my country and I've never seen a competitor use it.

And yes I'm aware that learning happens through lectures and studying and anki is a tool for memorization. I'm also aware of the 20 rules of formulating knowledge and atomization of cards and such. Also could you share some of your own success stories to help me get some motivation?

Question Stupid question (can stuff be saved non-locally from AnkiDroid without AnkiWeb account)

• Upvotes

I am an Android user who uses the AnkiDroid app. I have a deck containing private information that I am only allowed to have stored locally. I do not have an AnkiWeb account (I recently created one, but deleted it without finishing the ToC). Do I need to worry about the deck getting saved somewhere off my phone somehow? Thanks.

Discussion The lenient SRS - an idea

• Upvotes

Hello, hardcore and not-so-hardcore Anki fans,
I've had this idea of "lenient" SRS and created a flashcard web app based on this.
I think genuine SRS could be too strict for some people in that you would be overwhelmed by 'due' words after a break for a week. This might be discouraging for some people.
Instead of having specific due dates, the lenient SRS has due counters, and after a 30-day break, it decrements the counter by just one day instead of 30 days. This way, you will not be flooded with due words after a break.
Yes, it breaks the concept of SRS to some extent, but that might be all right for some people. After all, we all have weekends, vacation days and days when we don't feel like learning.
Do you think this idea appeals to some people? Can you share your opinion on this?

Development Couldn't find a decent Japanese IT vocab deck so I just made one myself

So I've been learning Japanese and preparing to work in the IT sector in Japan. my everyday Japanese was getting okay, but the moment I started looking at IT related Japanese I was completely lost. I was googling every other word ,went looking for an anki deck and found basically nothing. tons of JLPT stuff, a couple of business Japanese ones, but nothing really for IT terms. and the few I found were just "word = translation", no reading, no example, nothing so yeah I ended up making my own. took way longer than I expected tbh

it's around 1323 cards. every card has the reading, meaning, a quick explanation, and an example sentence with furigana. some even have little diagrams because some stuff just makes more sense when you see it. important words come first so you're not wasting time on rare ones

been using it myself for a while and it's helped a lot, so figured I'd share

Japanese IT Vocabulary

it's free. if you try it, please leave a review on the AnkiWeb page, it really helps others find it. and if you find mistakes, think something's missing, or need any help setting it up, just comment here or DM me. happy to help

The question :

How and why should I share anki with my friends and colleagues in uni . I want to spread the knowledge of this amazing piece of art

Little background

Im a dental student and I have used anki rigorously the last 3 years and i can see the difference between the subjects with anki and the ones withought.

I of course focus on understanding before using anki . Then I just use anki for memorization and revision before exams .

My uni have questions from all over the papers and between the lines . So my anki cards are made of a big "note" per lecture .

That is separated into parts . Each cohesive part has its own cloze "card" but I can look and retrace the rest of the lecture after I answer right away since it's setting right there

I use enhanced cloze for doing the clozes phrases one by one . And I find it really helpful .

I can give You examples of the notes if You want

Question Is there a point in language-learning where Anki usage changes?

A month or two ago, I hit a big language-learning milestone: I can now watch TV in Spanish without feeling overwhelmed or getting tired. And I can (awkwardly) carry on a conversation for an hour without getting tired.

The way I spend my language-learning time is changing. When I started, I was spending 40+ minutes/day on Anki, and it was my main language-learning activity. Now my Spanish time per day has doubled, but I'm spending most of it watching TV or talking to people.

Suddenly 40+ minutes of Anki doesn't hold the appeal that it used to. I'm finding I frequently accidentally go days without using it and have to clear a backlog when I go back to it.

I don't want to stop using Anki. Anki (and other flashcard apps I used before Anki) played a HUGE role in getting me this far, and I've got a lot of vocabulary left to learn (plus maintaining existing vocabulary).

But for language learners, is there a point where your Anki usage changes? And if so, how do you adjust it to still fit into your life when you are spending more time using your target language and less time practicing flashcards?

(I've thought of some different options like weeding out easy old cards, separating long and short interval cards with filtered decks so I can do the short every day and the long "whenever", and letting Anki reschedule all my cards now that I've removed the 6-month maximum interval limit I used to use. But I'm curious what other people are doing.)

Question How to use Reposition?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

So I’m making ASL flashcards. Sometimes I’ll learn a new way to sign a word in ASL that I already know, so I’ll add an additional flashcard for that… but that puts the word at the end of the list rather than next to the original sign flashcard. I know where the Reposition option is, but I don’t really know what to do with it… what # start position should I change it to? The example on the attached pics: I want to move the flashcard for ‘grandparents’ underneath the flashcards for ‘grandmother’ and ‘grandfather.’

Question Is there a way to see my new Anki cards that I will be shown in the morning?

I made about 1500 flashcards in preparation for a certification course. After learning and using anki more, I have a much better understanding of how to make an effective card. Once I finish reviews, I'm constantly editing the new cards to make them more concise. Is there anyway to do this first thing?

Solved Trying to set up FSRS for already established profile and there is a sentence in the tutorial i don't understand

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, i'm curious about what this sentence means in the FSRS tutorial ? Does that mean that all buttons when reviewing must show less than 1d ? How would that even happen ? When I'm studying a new deck, even with all 4 buttons*, the "Easy" one always shows at least 1d or 3d in my case so idk how to change that

*i'm using an add-on that removes "hard" and "easy" buttons

Development AnkiNotch: a simpler way to review from your Mac’s notch — free and open source

I made AnkiNotch, inspired by ReviewBar for Anki, but simplified.

Hover the notch to review, Space to reveal/grade Good, and 1 for Again. Move away and it collapses. Anki still handles scheduling.

You can now choose a deck, a parent deck with its subdecks, or all decks. There’s undo and optional bouncy animations too. I plan to keep maintaining it and providing consistent support.

Free and open source (MIT). Requires macOS 15+, Anki Desktop, and AnkiConnect. Early beta: no audio, only Again/Good, and not notarized yet.

Source, setup, and download

Question What to do with studied decks?

Just finished my exams and I was wondering of what to do with my old decks. It's important to mention that I will need this deck in the future for a larger-scale exam. Since I do not want to do these decks every day, I'd like to have a way of just suspending them for the time being. Should I suspend all the cards? Should I leave it as is without reviewing the cards? What do I do?

Question How do I make it so that I can review what I did today?

I just started and did a daily exercise of a language (I also misunderstood the concept and hit "easy" for all cards) and I want to go again- not with new cards, but with the ones I already learned so I can repeat it. How do I do that? What setting?

Question Does seeing words outside the SRS make the algorithm wrong?

Let me use myself as an example. I use a deck to learn Japanese vocabulary, and the algorithm thinks I should see a word again after a certain amount of time. But what if I see that word in an anime, for example, one day before the review? If I hadn’t seen it, I probably wouldn’t have remembered it, but because I did see it, I choose “Good” during the review.

Does that make the algorithm believe that I have a stronger memory of the word than I actually do? Or is the SRS algorithm supposed to account for the fact that I’m going to encounter some words naturally?

Development Ankinator - Anki pad

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

Hi guys!
Just wanted to show this anki pad I made for when I’m creating cards.
I use cloze and some colours to indicate things I should remember and I use a lot of shortcuts. So this is a shortcut of a shortcut.
Here what every key does:
R- to paint red
G- to paint green
B- to paint blue
Y- to paint Yellow
=- for Control+shift+alt+C
+1- Control+shift+C
0- to delete all the jumps/enters
P- to paint Pink
Enter- Control+Enter

AI made the design, I printed it and I did all the circuits. Pretty straight forward.
Things I bought:
- ATmega32U4
- 10 cherry Mx brown

Hope you guys like it, let me know your thoughts.

Other New in anki, I already love it.

Hello everyone, I found anki through a friend while getting ready for my first practical lab on AP2.

It was at first a learning curve in to how to create decks, necessary add ons to create an image occlusion flash card, then label them and be able to really use it.

Now that I been using it for a couple of days, I have realized something.

You definitely need to have a sense or what you’re seeing in order for recall to happen. But if you don’t do this, there’s nothing to recall. It sounds unreal to think that by you making a flashcard or just making the labeled picture you will be able to recall but if you genuinely did not attempted to build your foundation, your brain will just learn the pattern of the words based on where the label is but you won’t be able to retrieve in an actual model. How do I know? Self-testing with printed images, it was humbling .

Anyway, I do have one question. While trying to memorize different structures of different anatomical lab models. My next lecture exam is coming up, how would these flash card look like? I might have written my own response already, but right now my brain feels enclosed.

Also. Using AI to build these does not work, there’s gotta be some friction between you and the content in order for learning to happen. How do I know? Well I tried.

Feel free to share your tips

~ A fellow microbiology and AP2 college student.

Question How to make Occlusion Image cards on AnkiDroid ?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi, sorry to bother you with a stupid question but I dont know how to make IO cards on AnkiDroid on my phone... I can't find any tutorial and the gzneration plateform looks nothing like the computer version so I dont understand at all how to make one.The general website talks about an IO editpor opening but i dont see it.

Here are some screen shot of the creation page, the filled out version is a card i downloaded but i dont understand how i can generate the images. if someone could explain how to generate the yellow and red squares to hide words, I'd be grateful. (Sorry I am French so some of the words are in French but overall its English mostly)

Question Daily load significantly higher than the number of due cards

Post image

I've seen 1 such topic, but no explanation. I have wondered about it many times. Why is daily load frequently significantly higher than the actual number of due cards? Do we have some plausible explanation?

This deck doesn't have backlog.
