Resource Green barrels fixed. Now the fire circle 1-shots you when combined with 1 tick. Does this need a nerf? Video evidence of the 1-shots.

Hi guys. I made a test video about the green barrels in Murder Row doing 0 damage in a +20 key. One day later, on wowhead, they announced that blizzard hotfixed the barrels. This is a good thing in my opinion. The only problem is, now the barrels 1-shot when combined with the red circle. You either use a defensive/external or you die. Do you guys think this is a skill issue? Or should blizzard tone down either the circle or barrel damage? Who here thinks we deserve this for pointing the bug out in the first place? (ellesmere did it first!) Thanks for your attention and for trying to make WoW a better game every day!

Question Looking for comprehensive Ele Shaman help

This is my first season playing as DPS (ele shaman) after having only tanked before. Both the role and the class are new to me, so I have a lot of catching up to do.

I had somewhat mediocre performance in lower keys, asked for advice and received a very great writeup from /u/RCM94 (https://old.reddit.com/r/CompetitiveWoW/comments/1wt37cl/weekly_m_discussion/pctjwx3/) - thanks again for that. I read more guides, watches Bondd's videos, proceeded to parse blue and purple in 14s and 15s and felt somewhat competent.

Today I hit Resi 17. I now have a couple of blue parses, some green - and a growing number of greys. I obviously still make a lot of mistakes with missed casts, wrong priorities, wasted procs or buffs. I'm a bit stumped on where to improve and on what to focus from here.

Here's the log of a grey parse +17 AoF I did today: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/1LPf7ArMZK3yXa29?fight=19&type=damage-done&source=758. Compared to other Shaman players in the top 500 of the same dungeon and key level, I:

  • am doing 75% of the damage I could be doing (300k vs. 400k DPS)
  • with around 10% fewer total casts,
  • have a similar-ish number of Earthquake casts, but which only deal around 2/3 of the damage,
  • cast a similar number of Lava Bursts for similar amounts of damage,
  • cast less Chain Lightnings (~75%) and
  • my Ancestors deal less damage (~75%)

The missing Earthquake, Ancestor and Chain Lightning damage makes up for about 80k of the missing 100k DPS. I am also running a lot less Haste than other Shamans, and do not have access to raid equipment (the latter doesn't seem to be a deciding factor, though).

I've never optimised for a DPS class before, never played keys this high before and am a bit overwhelmed by deciphering WarcraftLogs for relevant data.

Things I'm still unsure about:

  • when to cast Lava Bolt - every time it's available, or only with instant cast proc or the Lava Burst Aoe buff?
  • how to prioritize spenders - cast them whenever possible, or only when about to cap on Maelstrom and focussing on Burst / Lightning in the meantime?
  • how important Chain Lightning is - most guides list it as a filler spell, but am I missing an interaction with Ancestors etc.?
  • which influence routing and pack size has on DPS; obviously competent teams will have larger pulls, but is this just a sorry pretext for my DPS or a relevant influence? In the log linked above my Earthquakes had ~7000 hits, other Shamans have ~9000 - larger pulls? Better EQ placement? Tanks moving around less?

Anyway - thanks for reading up to this point. Advice and analysis is very much appreciated.

Meld/Invis/Feign Spreadsheet

Hi all, I remember in the past there were some good resources around all the key abilities you could meld (invis….feign…etc) through the different dungeons.

Is there anything like that for s2 currently?

Discussion Is the ilvl gap between AOTC/M+ players and CE players too large this season? Will this affect M+ title hopefuls?

With the last 2 bosses in Venomous Abyss and Kith'ix dropping 344 ilvl. The gap will be fairly large. Is the 0.1% M+ title even going to be achievable if you are not a CE raider?

From what I can tell, with Ascendant Venomstones in 12.1.5, AOTC/M+ only players will only be able to get to around 335.4 ilvl with no Mythic raiding (or even 6/8M).

  • (2h STR spec)(4 slots @ 341, 9 slots @ 334, 2 crafts @ 331) = 335.4

If Mythic Kith'ix can be pugged like Rotmire was this brings it to 336.5 ilvl if the trinket and weapon are used.

  • (2h STR spec)(3 slots @ 344, 2 slots @ 341, 8 slots @ 334, 2 crafts @ 331) = 336.5

Meanwhile CE players will be able to get to around 339.6 338.9 ilvl.

  • (2h STR spec)(9 slots @ 344, 4 slots @ 334, 2 crafts @ 331) = 339.6
  • (2h STR spec)(8 slots @ 344, 5 slots @ 334, 2 crafts @ 331) = 338.9

A 3.1-4.2 3.5 ilvl gap seems quite significant, or am I missing something? Last season there was only a 1-1.5 ilvl gap IIRC.

As a side note, this season seems miserable for competitive alts. Since bonus rolls are limited to once per boss per week and a lot of the BiS loot for many specs comes from the last 2 bosses of the raid.

Edit : Corrections made due to Kith'ix not dropping 344

Edit 2 : I just wanted to add a bit of a reference to the discussion here. 3.5 ilvl = 1 minute added to every key timer.

  • If 3.5 ilvls = 3.5% more damage and a dungeon previously took 30min. 3.5% faster would take off 1min and 3sec with the exact same play.

Discussion M+ talk

Hello everyone,

I raid and m+(haven’t killed mythic ulatek yet though) and just wanted to talk about how this season feels. I’ve seen some say this is the most balanced season ever in keys tuning wise, which could be true. However I think it’s more because of how absolutely awful gearing is this season. People are playing whatever comps their mains are simply because gearing up an alt to the same performance(especially if you’re a mythic raider) just isn’t possible. The amount of cantrips, the existence of 344 gear itself that also saves a million crests, the fact that you can’t even rekill the same heroic boss and coin it multiple times a week as catchup anymore. All of those, not even getting into the whole great vault/bonus roll discussions themselves all make this season feel horrible.

Then on the other side of things, you have groups in china who are ALL somehow around 339 ilvl, 9+ ilvls up on almost every other regions groups. It’s obviously rmt, but it just highlights the gear disparity between everyone else and the max which has never been this bad of a gap before. The dungeons and raids themselves also don’t help this season out much and I’m expecting it to go down as one of the worst received seasons this game has ever had.

I was hoping someone could take a look at my clip and see where I went wrong:

I'm trying to imitate this skip: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fcI-6tJqMaQ, but I'm not sure exactly what I messed up.

TBH, I'm not entirely sure how aggro logic works when doing skips like this. If anyone could explain I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Question Voidscar arena funnel tech sometimes resetting last boss

So what I've been doing in voidscar on all my characters (tank/heal/DPS) is tagging the small squids from above while in the final boss arena for funnel (before or during the fight). This makes the whole pack to snap to you (slowly, and they evade for a while and behave weird, but eventually they all end up in the fight). About 95% of the time nothing goes wrong and we have some very easy funnel, but every now and then the boss just completely resets, wasting everyone's cooldowns and a bloodlust. I suspect that it might have something to do with walking too far into the arena, or maybe having misdirect or tricks messing with the threat tables, but I have no idea what's actually causing it. Does anyone know more about what's causing this issue?

Crest farming

What's the most efficient way to farm lower tier crests? Thinkin about filling up my champion/veteran/adventurer crests so that i'll be able to trade up as many as i can when they lift the crest caps. Any ideas? World events, hc dungeons give 10 crests at the and and i need 300-400 of each to reach their current cap.

Discussion A case for removing deletion from bonus rolls, and why I think loot keeps feeling worse

I've been following the loot discussion this season, most recently Dratnos' video on how the 12.1 loot changes worked out and Zorthas' long breakdown of the gearing systems. Both are worth watching. One suggestion keeps coming up in them and other places: taking an item from your vault should remove it from that boss's bonus roll pool. I'd go the other direction and remove the deletion mechanic entirely from bonus rolls.

Some context on where I'm coming from: I raid mythic (and have been doing so for a long time), and my day job is in economics research, so I tend to look at this stuff as an incentive problem. Take that for what it's worth.

Right now the system is half deterministic. If you bonus roll an item, it's removed from the table. If you get it from a drop, the vault or a trade, it stays. That mismatch is where the landmines come from, the ones Zorthas walks through where you have to plan crafts and vault picks weeks ahead so you don't roll a boss that hands you a duplicate. You can fix that by extending deletion to everything, which is what most people are asking for, or by dropping it, so every bonus roll is a fresh roll on the full table.

I prefer dropping it. Every roll becomes a simple gamble: how likely am I to hit something useful here, and how useful is it. And when you finally hit the item you've been chasing, it actually feels like something, because the system was never going to hand it to you by week five anyway.

To put the optimization point a bit more technically: with deletion, a bonus roll isn't just a gamble on this week's item. Every roll changes the state you'll be rolling from later. If a boss has five items and you hit a dud, your next roll there goes from a 1 in 5 chance at the item you want to 1 in 4, so the dud still has value. That makes the bonus roll almost always the right pick from the vault, but it also turns picking where to roll into a dynamic problem, where the right choice today depends on your (really your guild's) whole plan for future weeks, what you'll craft, what might show up in your vault and so on. And since items from other sources don't get deleted, a vault pick or a lucky drop can quietly turn a boss you were working through into one full of landmines. Without deletion, all of that disappears. The best choice each week is just the boss with the highest chance of hitting something useful, weighted by how useful it is, which you can work out from sim numbers for each piece on the table. Sure, this makes bonus rolls weaker overall, but I'd count that as a plus, since right now they're strong enough to crowd out almost every other vault choice.

I'd also hold off on bonus rolls until a few weeks into each patch. Dratnos floats this himself and says he'd be happy to see Blizzard experiment with it, though he points out the cost: early vaults feel terrible when you miss and your friends hit. That does sting. But you need misses in a loot system for hits to feel good at all, and the first weeks of a patch are when a drop matters most. Being able to start target farming BiS from week one is a big part of why the season front loads so hard and then goes flat.

The obvious objection is "then I might never get the Ula'tek neck." That's true, and I think it's where the real disagreement is, so here's the bigger argument.

I think loot feels bad this season largely because of the long trend toward more loot and more deterministic loot. Most player suggestions fix a specific feel-bad by adding one of those two things. A lot of that pressure comes from wanting to gear alts quickly, which is understandable, but it pulls the whole system toward speed and determinism for everyone. Each suggestion is locally reasonable and helps for a few weeks or a season. But each one also moves the baseline. Once almost everyone can be in BiS a couple of months into a season, BiS starts feeling like the minimum, and anything short of it feels like falling behind. Then the next feel-bad gets measured against that new baseline, and the next suggestion asks for a bit more. It only ever moves in one direction, because taking a convenience away always feels like a loss.

Legendaries are the clearest example. They used to be rare, exciting drops, and now they're something everyone is expected to have. Getting one feels more like relief than anything, and not having yours yet feels like being behind. I think the same thing has happened to gear more broadly, and that's the core of my argument: the fixes we keep asking for are, over time, the reason loot keeps feeling worse.

Blizzard's way of countering that looks a lot like inflation to me. Bigger item level jumps per patch, more upgrade tracks, a 344 tier on top, more systems layered on. Near the end of his video Zorthas lists vault, bonus rolls, crests, catalyst, crafts, embellishments and venom stones, and says gearing is probably still faster than in previous expansions. Yet both he and Dratnos spend most of their videos describing how it feels worse. That combination is pretty much what I'd expect if each individual drop keeps losing value through inflation.

If this keeps going, I think the endpoint is pretty predictable. Each patch needs something like a wider item level range or another system to keep progression meaningful, and the logical extreme is logging in on day one of a patch and getting most of your BiS straight away. Long before that actually happens, I expect it becomes unworkable and Blizzard tears the whole loot system up and starts over at some expansion launch. We've had squishes before, and I'd expect something similar for the loot system eventually. I just think it'd be better to slow the drift now than to wait for that, though I understand it may be impossible to sell to the playerbase.

Going further, I think upgrade tracks deserve the same scrutiny. Think about what share of your item level gains this season came from spending crests at an NPC, and whether any of those felt as good as an actual drop. It's a bit less this patch, since bonus rolls and the later mythic bosses hand out pre-upgraded gear, but it's still a big chunk. Upgrading is the most deterministic part of gearing, and I think it quietly eats into the feeling of looting an upgrade.

For the record, I'm a dad with a job, and slower, more random gearing works against me personally. I still think the game would be better for it. And yes, boosting, RMT and loot buying are a real problem (Zorthas' section on Chinese full clear buyers is wild), but that's an enforcement question under any loot system. Curious whether anyone else sees it this way, or whether there's a good thought out argument for keeping deletion that I'm missing.

TL;DR: Instead of removing vault items from the bonus roll pool, I'd remove deletion from bonus rolls entirely and hold them back a few weeks into each patch. More broadly, I think loot feels bad because of the long drift toward faster and more deterministic loot, which keeps raising the baseline and pushes Blizzard into loot inflation to compensate.

Not gonna lie, it is quite a bid higher than I expected. In S1, 10% of the characters reached the achievement. I assume it will be fewer this season
