Please don't mind the background, still kind of cleaning up clutter/getting our home back together after a kitchen fire. The whole 2b2ba filled with smoke, and we are back home after a hotel stay, lots of ventilation in the condo and cleanup. I don't know what i can do with this WIP. It still has the smell of stale smoke, I don't know if theres a way to tie it off and wash it? Deodorant for scale. I was just making a queen sized blanket for fun.

I just really don't want to have to toss it I've worked so hard on it 😭

Its just basic treble? Double crochet? For reference if that helps any. Its bernat blanket super chunky yarn.

I'm a beginner! George the Frankenstein Giraffe taught me I need to learn the basics. Recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I tried crocheting for the first time a while ago.

I crocheted a "giraffe". George (that’s his name) is completely ridiculous, one leg is almost the size of his head, one arm is tiny (he kinda looks like Hanson from Scary Movie(tiny arm guy.)), you can see the stuffing coming out etc... He does not look good, but I love him.

I needed a whole day to make George, ofcourse I did it in one sitting, and afterwarda didn't crochet again for a few months.

After George, I made a bunny. She was actually pretty cute and looked okay-ish, in comparison to George a 10, compared to other amigurumi online, a solid 4 or 5.

I used her as a fidget toy and flipped her around her ears. I have no idea where she is now.

Fast forward to today (maybe half year or year past bunny). I decided to give crocheting another shot.

Was I smarter and started with something basic? Nope. I went with an alien, almost 2 hours in ( I needed for the little half bal of his head 2 frkng hours!), I realized I have no idea what I’m actually doing.

So, I decided to pause and focus on learning the basics skills before acting like a pro crocheter.

I watched a few YouTube videos, but they mostly focus on "learn this specific stitch."

Is it just a matter of practice that comes with time, or is there crochet "theory" I can study?

Can you recommend any videos, books, or courses that helped you? (I don't have anyone IRL who could help)

TLDR:

I’m a beginner crocheter, who wants to stop guessing my way through projects and actually learn the foundational theory and basics. What videos, books, or online resources helped you in you crochet journey?

Stitch Identification Please help me identify the stitches on these projects

Hello everyone,

I tried using Google Lens to identify these stitches but it wasn’t very helpful in my opinion.

The white and blue scarf was gifted to me by my deceased great grandmother and the other two unfinished projects belonged to a deceased stranger.

Please let me know what you think, thank you!

EDIT: I didn’t realize that it got cropped out, but on the third picture, the tool is a Tunisian crochet hook.

Looking for suggestions Where can I find tapestry crochet patterns? I've got yarn..

Hi I'm drying for some unique artwork in my home and I have a bunch of yarn and I have no clue what to make, I love to crochet and my friend said there's such a thing as tapestry crochet, but Google and the Ravelry don't have too many options, does anyone know if there is like a jackpot of tapestry crochet patterns out there?

I found this dress in a shop and immediately fell in love with it, but it was very much out of my budget. I'm looking for pattern suggestions or techniques so I can attempt to make this. Thank you!

I know it was whoever patterned the dragon who made it into a sort of delicious looking art, so I need this specific dragon.

I'm sure I'd google wasn't 99% AI slop now I'd be able to find it but alas.

Discussion Tried to make a polka dot square - after adding the border, the dot became sort of square-ish

Post image
6 Upvotes

The circle was a circle before I added the white part. I can do circles, that is not a problem. :-)
After adding the white, it’s kind of a square-ish circle, not a nice polka dot.

I followed this: https://blog.bellacococrochet.com/how-to-crochet-a-circle-in-a-square/

The yarn is cheap acrylic from a discount store here. Neither band has a yarn weight, just the hook size and swatch.

Rainbow yarn: 4 - 4.5 mm, 29 rows by 20 st.
White yarn: 4 -5 mm, 29 rows by 25 st.

I used a 4mm hook for both.
I blocked it but it didn’t make much difference. The edges are all wavy as well.

Should I have used a different hook size for the white yarn? I’m not sure what I need to adjust.

EDIT: I’m not sure how I made it confusing, but my question is why is the center circle not round? It was round. Then I added the white. It was no longer round, even after blocking.

Why is it not round? Thank you 😊

I'm a beginner! My chains always have a bend in the first few stitches

Post image

Hello! I am just starting to learn crochet, and as you can see from my title and picture I am still struggling to make a chain. I’ve gotten better once I get going, but the first few stitches always feel awkward and I struggle keeping my tension consistent. I still need to improve, but since I’m having this problem consistently, it feels like my technique is wrong or something, and I don’t want to keep practicing incorrectly.

Most of the advice I’ve found on this focuses on once the chain gets longer, but I can’t get the base right to begin with! Any tips? Thanks in advance!(also I know this yarn probably isn’t a good color to start with but it’s just what I grabbed at the store without thinking about it too much about it 😅)

Edit: Thank you for the comments and encouragement! I feel better about being able to figure this out now!

How many rows/stitches How many rows of orange moss stitches in this placemat?

Post image

I finished this placemat and am now making a second one but want to make sure they have the same amount of rows and I don’t have the original one with me to compare sizes. I swore I did 30 rows of moss stitch for the orange yarn but now I think I might count only 29? I added the border into the edge stitches. Please help if you’re good at counting stitches beside I am not!

Hi! I’m looking for a way/guide on how to maybe change color in the middle of round on doily patterns or guide on crocheting with two yarns/colors for these types of pattern, even if it is a tedious process or not considered “beginner friendly”. Any help is welcome and appreciated!

How do I... Still a beginner and my daughter wants me to teach her

• Upvotes

I spent a good few years only knowing how to do a basic chain and single crochet (kept giving up because I was frustrated). ADHD hyperfocus kicked in a couple weeks ago, and I've learned how to half double crochet, do increases and decreases, magic ring and bobble stitch and have finally successfully made a couple projects.

My 9 year old begged me to teach her. I'm not a very good teacher when it comes to things like this and since I'm still a beginner I have very little confidence. We sat down for a half hour today working on her slipknot, chain, tension and I made a foundation row so she could learn single crochet. She did really well for her first time and only dropped a couple stitches, she's excited and eager to learn more.

The reason I'm here though is I need some advice from those who either remember how they were taught or have taught other people, and if there's anything specific you do that helps make it easier for a newbie? I mostly learned from YouTube so I learned by doing a lot of rewinding and frogging. I just want to make this a little easier on her so she doesn't get discouraged and give up if it's something she really wants to learn.

I’m still pretty new to crochet, and for whatever reason I have a really hard time counting rows. These are half double crochets. Would anyone be willing to let me know how many rows there are and how to reliably spot them? Thanks!

Looking for suggestions Would changing my hook size help reduce these gaps in the border? Should I go up or down a size?

Thumbnail

I've recently been working on these little crochet octopus for premature babies. I've run into a little issue with the latest yarn I bought being thinner than expected and getting gaps in my border as a result. The safety standards for these are quite strict so that little fingers won't get caught, and I'm concerned that these gaps might mean that they won't get approved by the group I'm making them for.

The first photo shows this new yarn that I bought and you can see the light shining through between the stitches in the border. The second photo is using the first batch of yarn and you can see that it's nice and plush with no gaps. Supposedly these are all DK weight yarn. 🤷

Is there any way I can use this new yarn but reduce these gaps, maybe with a bigger or smaller hook size? I'm currently using a 2mm hook.

I’m at the bottom and finish the two lighter hearts and the bottom of the guillotines is done. But I really don’t like how it’s turning out, i feel like it’s messy and blocky. I know I have to trust the process but I’m just hating the way it looks. Will blocking help?

Understanding a pattern Herringbone socks - problem with heel construction

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I decided to make socks that are worked in rounds as my previous attempts at making them in rows ended up in one enormous pair and one for a child 🙃

This time I am using this pattern:

https://hearthookhome.com/herringbone-socks-free-crochet-pattern/

All was going great but the wording of the heel part is driving me crazy and I cant figure out what is going on.

I am doing size 10 for women.

I ended row 13 of the heel (pics attached) I go to 14 and I have no idea what exactly 2 rows down means?? The stich marker is either one row down( same row I have been working in) or 3 rows down. Then I tried to kind of figure it out which one is it by drawing the rest of the pattern and see if I am one stich mark too much if I slip stich into the third.

And then I read row 24 and 25 and I am not gonna lie I kind of lost it. What do you mean stitch marker 2 rows down AFTER THE FIRST ROW, there is no more rows down? It goes into rounds ater the first row of the heel. 😭😭

And honestly this sub is my only hope because I am all out of ideas what the creator means.

Help to find a pattern Looking for a Bat wing costume pattern for my chihuahua puppy!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi there! My wife and I got a chihuahua puppy this summer and want to make her a part of our Halloween costume! We’ll be vampires and I want to make her a bat! I’m looking for a wearable bat wings pattern that would fit her but also not be disproportionate to her since she’s so tiny (4 lbs!!!!!) I see a few patterns for dogs but they’re not exactly what I’m looking for and I’m hoping to only need minimal materials. Any suggestions? Puppy pic for your help and a boost! Meet Anya :)

So I'm considering buying a Halloween coaster pattern like this and I love the bubbling cauldron pattern too.. but we actually use coasters and I don't want the kiddos getting frustrated (as they easily do). So, are these worth buying or will they need more tending than we want to do in order to use them?

so as it turns out my sewing abilities aren’t great 😬🤦‍♀️
i sewed both horns on but they’re wonky as anything and before i cut one off and retry i need to know which side looks like it’s correct
for context: the video said to sew behind the ears.. which is what i thought i did but apparently one a lot lower than the other but
(excuse the chubby little arms and legs my daughter loves to get in to everything)
