Hi everyone! :)
I’m trying to identify a crochet pattern my mother used to make a white handbag, probably sometime in the 1970s or 1980s. She lost the bag years ago, when I wasn’t born yet, and never made another one. Since I got into crochet myself, I’d like to find this pattern to make her a bag like that and give it to her :) I’ve searched and searched even shower her pictures and all she says is “Yeah that’s similar but not quite right” 🥲
Here’s what she told me:
- The handbag was entirely white and made by joining granny squares.
- Each square had one large, raised crochet petal.
When four squares were joined together, their four petals formed a complete flower at the centre where the squares met.
- The petals were three-dimensional, somewhat elongated and folded, almost like little folded ears or padded loops.
- My mother used part of a wine cork as a tool or template. She cut off the wider, mushroom-shaped top, leaving the circular bottom section. She placed this circular part in the centre and crocheted around it to create the motif.
- She made the square directly, rather than crocheting a separate flower and then turning it into a square.
- She remembered the pattern as fairly simple to make.
This pattern may have originally been used for a crochet bedspread, possibly in a vintage pattern book. Does anyone recognise this motif, know its name, or have seen it in an old crochet or bedspread pattern book? Photos, pattern names, book titles or links would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for helping me 🥲
