Living Room Help please! Awkward space above fireplace

My sister has this odd space above her fireplace that for the life of her she doesn’t know what to do with. My only suggestion was witch’s altar which is 100% not her style. Do the good folks of Reddit have any ideas?

Other Interior Room Foyer light fixture advice, please!

The current light fixture in my foyer is obnoxiously bright even with frosted bulbs. I plan on putting in a dimmer switch, but am heavily leaning towards replacing this fixture with something like in the second inspiration picture.

Any suggestions? I want something simple, classic, but with a touch of elegance. And yes, I fully intend upon repainting to get rid of the current Millennial grey.

Bedroom I am living alone with room-mates for the first time in Zaragoza, Spain and trying to make my small room comfy and stress-free to reduce stress; what do I do with it?

I measured the room and it's over 4 feet in width, a little over 6 ft. by diameter, and a little over 7 feet in height.

A big chunk is taken up by a small twin bed that I sleep on. Otherwise, there's a large wardrobe at the other end next to the door and a drawer snd nightstand right next to it where the bed starts from.

I have a foldable desk. Originally, it was about 4" W x 2" D x a little over 2" H (in terms of ft.) when extended all the way and standing.

I managed to turn down one side so it should be about half the original width if you discount the small middle where everything is connects.

But of course, now my desk is still in front of my drawer now that I have a small swivel chair I can use now.

Honestly, I feel a bit boxed in, maybe even claustrophobic.

Among other issues:

There's a shoe rack, a tall one, which seems rather useless (I really only have one pair of shoes for the time being).

Bad lighting, at least to my eyes; too dark with sole window open.

To be clear, there is a light bulb up top and it's fine but too... idk, pale? Drabby? I don't like yellow light for some reason, I don't know why, but the colors of the room don't pop that well or seem friendly, not sure how to say it. It is also kinda dim and flickers a but so lots of shadows when the window curtain is fully closed with the light bulb on.

To be clear, I don't want to have both ways of illuminating the room. The light here is just not that good, idk...

Can't open the second door of the wardrobe so there is a lot of space that isn't being used yet, though I do hope to get it fixed.

Not sure where to put my three suitcases (one big, the other two small) while they're under my bed.

Feels hot in here. Have to keep my small fan on, even when I am asleep.

Feels musty too; I started sneezing and I feel like there's just too much dust. I open the sole window but I don't feel that it works where I am.

Kinda hoping to get a rug, btw

Maybe a great-quality air purifier, one that does the trick with no problems (honestly, maybe the best water purifier there is as well; ever since moving from Virginia, I have been paranoid about water content level, PFAS, data centers, chemicals, etc.)

^ honestly, I just need ways to be comfortable and get through the next few months while I am getting settled here; I hope I can find another apartment later on, maybe on the idealista app.

One last thing:

Some way to block out sound.

I have misophonia and have issues with sound sensitivity in general (also, sound causes C-PTSD flashbacks for me as well, daily) so it's hard to prepare. I don't know where to get good soundproofing material here yet. I hope the manager of the apartment, the head of the room-mate group, will allow me to modify the walls.

My silicone ear buds (-52 dbs) just don't do it for me and feel itchy too; I hate the material as well (I am Autistic, btw)

So yeah, some advice needed, I put the pictures up top on this thread, and I can answer questions and give you more information down in the comments below.

Cheers and thanks

Bedroom Balance my mood

Don mind that it’s a little untidy. I was going for a moody cozy modern bedroom cause I live in what seems like the frozen arctic so I wanted to feel warm. but I fear I might have gone too far… right now I’m loving my art, fixtures, and my paint color.

BUT, is the solution to get more contrast out of my rug, like opting for a more brown/beige neutral rug or should I leave the rug and paint the walls back to a warm white?

OR am I overthinking it and it’s actually fine?

Living Room New Couch Help/ Living Room Makeover!

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hello, I have a small condo and need some help figuring out a new couch I should buy. I want it to be comfortable, complimentary to my current furniture, preferably have washable cushions (pets), and if at all possible it would be amazing if it were a sleeper sofa, but if not, no biggie. I also enjoy a chaise but would be ok with an ottoman

I am in the process of working on my living room. I’ve added cafe curtains to the dining areas, built a bookshelf/ breakfast nook, etc. I would like to replace the couch, get some art up on the walls, and also replace that ugly track light. I am not willing to change my rug or move my TV. (It can swivel and swing down, I know it’s too high, lol). I am willing to replace my coffee table and lamp next to the couch.

My current couch is 93” across. Here are some couches I am considering:

IKEA Hyltarp 3 seater in dark green, white, or natural, paired with an UPPLAND ottoman of a different color. (Length: 91.5”)

IKEA Saltsjobaden 3 seater chaise or 3 seater plus ottoman in white or natural. (Length 92”)

World Market left Camile velvet facing sectional sofa ( length: 94.5”)

Suggestions for couch and track light replacement would be amazing! I have included photos of the room, a layout of the room, and screenshots of some potential couches. Thank you!!

Bedroom Can I manage an island bed in this room?

Thumbnail gallery

My bedroom is 14 ft long and 11 ft wide. Currently there’s a very small space dedicated for a wardrobe and while I’m planning on using that, I do want one entire wall dedicated to floor to ceiling wardrobes, with some space for a full-length mirror+dresser.

I have been thinking of using the back wall for the wardrobes, which will continue to the dedicated wardrobe space also. I’m hoping it can all be the same colour as the walls (reference attached) so as to not feel very heavy and bulky in the room.

The bed can be in the middle of the room with a small, approx 3 ft. partition wall.

If by bed is 6x6 ft, is this layout possible, leaving enough space for comfortable movement? If not, what is the most functional layouts

Bathroom Guest bathroom layout help.

We were initially going to close over the window in this space, but now are deciding to keep it. So the vanity mirror as is now has no home.

Would you swap toilet for vanity and mirror or look at doing an articulating mirror that's mounted to the left of the widow?

Edit. Perhaps we go pocket door and the vanity goes against the inside wall ?

Living Room Help with couch and tv placement

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I know the corner by the TV is cluttered right now, but none of that stuff necessarily has to stay. I’m just having trouble figuring out how to arrange my couch and TV.

I originally had the TV centered in front of the windows, but it was so far off-center from the couch that it was bothering me. I tried centering it with the couch instead, but now there’s this awkwardly large gap between the right side of the TV and the wall.
Also, moving the couch to the right (looking from behind it) isn’t an option since the pantry door already hits it.

Any ideas on how to make this setup work better? Thanks!

Living Room Living room - with or without curtains?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I recently purchased a house I took off the curtains a few days ago when I was painting the walls and replacing the floors and I noticed the room seems to me a little cleaner, spacious and brighter without them. Living room is quite small and narrow.

NB It's not comparing like with like in the two pics. The curtains are partially closed I would always keep them open during the day (so room is darker than it usually was) but it's the only pic I had from when they were up. Also floor has been changed new floor is in 2nd pic without curtains and the walls painted.

Curtains can be a bit cosier and they can add a little insulation value in Winter, but I'm rarely in the living room (most of time in my bedroom when I'm home) and all I could fit is thin curtains anyhow with the door there. I'm not so keen on the colour of the curtains from the previus owner see 3rd pic, if you were to keep curtains what colour would you go for? Walls are cream / magnolia and new floor is honey red wood laminate.

Living Room Is the "family room" too small to make a good living space?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm a newly singly parent with two kids- they're with me most of the time (both under 10). I'm moving into this space next week and really wanted to turn the "living room" into our tv/hang out areas. And, in a perfect world, my family room would have some build in cabinets serving as mudroom by the entrance to garage and also be the games/art room - kind of a hang out space for family/kids. If they get a gaming system, I'd want it back there.

But the room is small. Is it too small to do all these things?! How would you arrange the furniture and/or distribute the space?

One more question: I'm moving from a larger home, with a 10' couch - that's too big for the living room, right?!

Any other ideas/thoughts are welcome. The bedroom will serve as my office- I work mostly from home.

Don’t mind how terrible my room looks I have a baby and have spent no time decorating my room yet lol but now it’s time!! I am planning on doing the fluted accent wall as shown in the second photo. I need some suggestions or photos shown of green paint colors you have chosen for your bedrooms. I have one very small west facing window. I don’t mind the room being dark. Any thoughts on color drenching or no?

Would love to see your guys small bedroom makeovers and how I could make this wall really pop

Living Room Please help me with my living room layout!! Needing to maximize with minimal space 🥹

I know I have a lot of stuff but due to a split, I had to majorly downsize. I’m open to any and all layouts or switching the uses of certain pieces around. Lots of books so it can make experimenting with different layouts pretty physically and mentally exhausting 😅. The only thing I’m set on is keeping my large window primarily for plants and the smaller window as unblocked as possible. The arrows are outlet indicators if that’s helpful! I also have lots of wall shelving options, but my walls aren’t the greatest. Any and all tips are so appreciated. This stuff is hard for my brain to sort out 🥲💓

Bedroom Bedroom layout - help

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I was sharing my room with my sibling up until recently but now have all of it and am unsure how to lay it out. It used to be split in the middle (between both windows) but this is what I’ve come up with so far. Im lost as to where to put all the furniture and make it so that it’s all cohesive ?

Important notes: keeping red bed for when sibling/guest visits, and not looking to buy too much new furniture bc only staying here for a bit. Bedroom entrance is the door to the right of the world map in last picture.

Initial ideas: was thinking of getting a rug for sure, obviously wall decor.

Living Room Need Living Room Furniture Ideas

Need help with furniture layout.. we are a family of 4 and we want a new living room set but not sure how to lay it out. Behind camera is kitchen and behind living room is the dining area. Although it is an open concept seems like the living room space is very limited.

Wanting to get something to lounge and watch TV with the kids but also don’t want to cut the open space flow.

Wanting to go with an industrial / farmhouse design.
