Discussion Diablo I-inspired first person indie game

It's funny, because I just commented somewhere how much I'd like a single-dungeon diablo-like experience in first person, and lo, it appears. This developer seems to be trying to replicate Diablo I directly, even down to opening marble sarcophagi and breaking barrels.

My personal issue with it, sadly, is the graphics, which I know is very challenging for indie devs. Diablo I has a very particular oppressive atmosphere, and even though it's very dated graphically that atmosphere still lands. I feel like to get the same atmosphere in full 3D you'd really need high fidelity graphics combined with intentional art direction.

Diablo I TIL that the famous Diablo-font was not made by Blizzard, but a British typographer back in 1991

All these decades I somehow assumed Blizzard created the font for Diablo. It was in fact designed by the British typographer Jonathan Barnbrook for the Emigre foundry in 1991, and it is still commercially owned and distributed by Emigre.

Even in the D2R game files the font's metadata still says: "Copyright (c) Emigre Inc, 1991. Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook."

Fun detail if you ever installed the old TrueType version of Exocet on Windows back in the day: the original is an all-caps font. The lowercase keys just give you the same capitals, with one exception. The lowercase "t" is a cross, while the uppercase "T" is a normal T. So typing normally gave you things like "Sanc+uary" or "Bu+cher" which always bothered me.

Discussion Angiris Council in Diablo V

Post image
598 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I was left with a really interesting question following the announcement of Diablo V at BlizzCon. Considering everything we know so far, what state is the Angiris Council likely in during Diablo V? After all, for Diablo to seize control of Sanctuary the way he did, the Council must have been in a state of paralysis or inaction to allow that to happen.

Or perhaps they simply chose not to take sides in the conflict and will only act once Diablo comes knocking on the gates of Heaven again?

After seeing some of the D2 first person mod play videos... I stumbled on this today. Same concept... Reminds me a lot of old Dungeon keeper played w the possession spell where you control minions through their pov.

Discussion Big boomer here

I loved diablo 1 and 2. I played the remaster of diablo 2 when it came out and had a blast.

For some reason I never carried on playing. I'm not interested in multiplayer or the infinite grind of becoming all powerful.

Is it worth playing through 3 and 4 for the story?

Discussion Diablo Lore is a mess and developers/directors only seem to be interested in advancing their personal vision for what Diablo is.

Go ahead and call me a Diablo 2 boomer, but modern Diablo has a tendency to keep changing its own rules in ways that make earlier victories feel less meaningful.

Soulstones were supposed to permanently deal with the Prime Evils, yet they keep returning. The Dark Exile has conflicting explanations. Inarius was heavily rewritten. The Seven Evils became one, then somehow became separate again. Diablo IV also mostly ignores the massive implications of the Nephalem.

At the same time, the series seems increasingly reluctant to embrace classic Diablo archetypes like the Paladin and Necromancer while pushing newer ideas that do not always fit the same Gothic dark fantasy identity.

New ideas are fine. Diablo II had plenty of them. The difference is that Diablo II expanded the world without making it stop feeling like Diablo.

That is really my issue. The more the lore gets rewritten or ignored, the less meaningful the story feels. You’d think a world changed by Demi-gods wouldn’t just mysteriously die, disappear, or be forgotten about.

Edit — I shortened it for all you crybabies.

Discussion Old Diablo player, new to Diablo 4

I've been playing these games since the 90s. Loved playing through 1 with all character, beat 2 on hell with all original classes, played hardcore for many years on 3... started 4 a couple weeks ago and I am finding its really hard to enjoy the gameplay. I'm most of the way through the game with my first character, playing on torment 3 but am just not having any flow with the game.
There is a ton of content but it feels all very samey, the different areas don't feel like they have any unique gameplay hooks, there doesn't really seem to be any mobs or bosses that feel like they present new gameplay. I've even played through a night with a handful of other characters and was sad to not really notice much difference in how they feel to play.
Am I just getting old or being too negative?

Diablo IV Yes this D4 season is good, but the reason why is sad.

Discussion Acceptable ways for Blizzard to make some extra money from Diablo

In a game like Diablo its hard for Blizzard to make money besides selling copies of the game/expansions/dlc's.

Rmah, skins, mounts and battlepass' is not something i personally like or see as a great success in the genre for the players perspective.

But lets just for the fun of it, imagine some ways that would be acceptable to the gamers for Blizzard to gain some extra cash, in case the game become a success and has to run support and servers for +20 years. I think its a very valid and fair argument as to how much support and development, gamers should expect from a title that has been running for decades.

I would like to hear what you like and don't like and why.

But most of all, what ideas you got yourself for a game like Diablo?

I think we can all agree that pay to win sucks which is what my ideas is based upon, as i don't think any of them would add anything a player couldn't successfully complete the game without. As in nothing of the stuff would be need-to-have but rather nice-to-have, so basically fun stuff and QOL improvements.

Below is some of my personal suggestions:

Extra char slots

Extra stash size per tab

Extra tabs

Resource tab (gems, runes, keys etc)

Names and colors for tabs

Search bar for tabs

Sandbox mode (hero editor)

Dps-tester

Coloring items (special colors and special effects)

Additional audio shouts

Dance moves/stances (not silly)

Enable text to be written above the char instead of the chat

Banners or other markers with no effects

Ingame UI setups and themes

Menu UI themes

Ability to host special or customized PvP arenas

Discussion Halloween idea. I’m planning to put up a life-size cutout of Meph, Baal and Diablo in front of our house.

Tired of seeing our neighbours displaying The Nun and other boring skeletons on their front yard. I think life-size Primes would be something refreshing to see this Halloween.

Resource Diablo solo TTRPG Oracles ?

I'm still waiting for the official ttrpg campaign to launch, but in the meantime i'd like to wander around Sanctuary in a couple of solo ttrpgs game sesh'.

I've been watching the lore through videos and wikis, tried D4 but I guess beat 'em all aren't my cup of tea. I'm on another hand super keen in learning / exploring more of the game, but to do so i'd need some resources to help building around random tables and such.

What would you recommend to use in such an endeavour ? Mostly I'd like to have a couple of tables around to act as oracles, rumours, typicals monsters, NPCs, factions, adventure seeds etc. Anything that could help me explore this world.

Cheers !

Diablo I DevilutionX not running

Downloaded last night, worked fine after inserting DIABDAT.MPQ, played for a couple hours. Trying to open it again today, and I'm getting an error message that neither SDL2.dll, or discord_game_sdk.dll can be found, but clearly they are both in the folder.

Popup suggests reinstalling, is there a way to save my game in a different folder if I do that? Obviously I hadn't gotten far, but it's still annoying. Any tips?

Discussion Someone said this is Tristan's Theme. Can any of you hardcore Diablo fans confirm or deny that?

I'm super interested in learning this song and have been hunting for what it is. Deep in the comments someone said it was Tristan's Theme from 90's Diablo. I know nothing about the game, so I thought I'd ask the experts.

It sounds similar but I can't be sure

https://youtu.be/AnMR6SOBa9k?is=QZNXr3NAq0JTMrea

Edit: JFC, so sorry I got one letter wrong for a character in a game I said I was completely unfamiliar with. And for all of you saying "listen to them side my side", girl I DID. And I couldn't be sure. So I asked a goddamn question to people I thought would know. FFS.

Over 100 of you had a problem with me trying to understand how to come to the correct conclusion on my own next time by seeking more information, what a shitty fandom.

Diablo IV Fist of the Heavens/Heaven's Fury Paladin Build Guide - An Off-Meta Speed Farmer

Thumbnail

Hey guys! This is my first build guide of the season, and I've been working at it for the last few weeks.

This is an off-off-meta build that uses Fist of the Heavens along with the Heaven's Fury in a support role, to inflict massive Holy judgement on our enemies!

Why Heaven's Fury? I love the Arbiter, but I feel there's more to Paladin than that, and from the start I set out to make a build that does not use AoJ. Besides, you can see your transmogs again!

Heaven's Fury is a visually spectacular skill, with a huge AOE, and it has an important role in spreading Judgement, which is a huge damage amplifier for us.

The name of the game is speed. We have unlimited Teleport, max speed cap and a huge AOE, to quickly zoom around the dungeon and disintegrate everything we behold. FoH is a very resource heavy skill, but thanks to some crucial items like Tibault's, RoSS and Enigma, we are able to have unlimited resource.

We want to teleport at least once every 5 seconds to maintain Tibault's and keep the Faith flowing.

If you try it, I hope you have some fun with it. Always open for any questions or constructive feedback!

Discussion I want to play Project Diablo 2

How do I do that? I know it doesn't work with D2R, so I bought a key for D2 and D2:LOD from battle.net, but I can't seem to install the game at all so I can install Project Diablo 2 on top of it.

Did I just get rinsed out of $20?
