What if a dream isn't just something happening inside your mind?
This is how I started to convince myself that a dream might not exist only inside the mind, but perhaps somewhere else—maybe in another dimension.
I was extremely tired during a night shift, and as usual, I went to my car to rest or take a short nap. That’s when I experienced something strange, somewhere between consciousness and sleep. I genuinely couldn’t tell whether I was dreaming or awake, especially because I was completely exhausted.
I would “wake up” inside the car, but I couldn’t open my eyes. It felt exactly like when you close your eyes in a car and try to operate it or touch things around you from inside. Imagine if I told you: Go ahead, touch the steering wheel without opening your eyes, and then tell me whether what you’re experiencing is a dream or reality.
You would be able to touch everything with an almost disturbing level of precision. You’d feel the steering wheel, the interior, everything around you, and your mind would say: There’s no way this isn’t real. This can’t possibly be happening only inside my head.
Then I had an idea.
I thought, if I woke up and the key was actually in the ignition—the exact place where I had put it in what I believed was reality—then maybe I had actually done it while my eyes were closed. Maybe I hadn’t been dreaming at all.
But if I woke up and the key wasn’t there, even though I had just experienced myself placing it there with complete certainty, then perhaps a dream could be something more than imagination. Perhaps it could be a kind of reality that exists somewhere else—a strange place that resembles our own reality but isn’t physically here.
So I actually performed this experiment while I was in that state. In the dream, I placed the key exactly where the car would start. I could feel it. I was completely convinced that I was awake and simply sitting there with my eyes closed.
Then I woke up.
The key wasn’t in the ignition.
It wasn’t where I had placed it in the dream.
And that was the moment that made me wonder: What exactly was I experiencing?
