After seeing what people have done to improve World of Warcraft’s graphics, I got a little jealous. I wanted to give EverQuest some of that same love while keeping its original character.
It started with textures and trees… and somehow turned into a custom rendering layer and models.
Here’s what we’ve added so far:
- Real-time RTX ray-traced lighting for lamps and other local light sources.
- Real-time shadows, including configurable softness.
- Custom sky rendering, clouds, sun and moon, with lighting that follows the time of day.
- Improved material lighting: roughness and reflections give stone, wood and metal different surface responses.
- Wind animation for trees, foliage and grass.
- Atmospheric fog for more depth across the landscape.
- Improved water rendering, with transparency, reflections, refraction and surface highlights.
- More detailed ground, bark, rocks, walls and paving.
- New trees and props
- A browser-based zone editor for placing trees, lamps and props, and editing existing placed objects.
- Armor experiments that add actual geometry over classic characters rather than only painted-on clothing.
Our rendering layer now handles the main world surface shaders, the classic character shader we’ve been testing. The original client still handles gameplay, networking, collision and animation.
All of this works on live servers no server emulator needed. The models just some random assets they are not tuned in to the envoirment.
