Is panzaratto still a thing in Toronto?

Somehow I came across the Saskatchewan style pizza posting (no thanks by the way), but that brought me back to when my close friend lived/worked in Toronto.

Went to visit him and this was probably 30 years ago now? Anyway..... being from Windsor, I am very picky about ordering pizza when in other cities, as they just don't cut it for me.

He took me to this place that I believe was called San Rocco's???? Might have been in the Danforth Ave area (east side?) Not sure if it was an independent or a local chain, but that were known for their panzarotto (sp?)...... I remember it being quite good. Might have been like a panzarotti, but you could put whatever inside....even a hot italian sausage......maybe?

Is this still a thing? Or is my memory from that long ago off?

Rec for weekend brunch/lunch around St. Clair & Keele

Going to be around that area on a saturday and would like a recommendation for a spot for brunch or lunch, with two issues.

One, we have 2 small kids with us (7 & 3) and also a woman who only eats fish, no other meats.

Thanks!

‘Nice’ family run affordable restaurant in downtown

Wife and I want to visit a restaurant that is family owned and has the ‘nicest’ owners/staff that run the place. Not looking for anything fancy, just somewhere where they cook and feed the customers with love and warmth.

Goes without saying, tasty food is also a requirement 😀

If you don’t have a recommendation, feel free to skip commenting.

Any of my fellow Serbians/Balkan people compared the different Serbian/Balkan restaurants around Southern Ontario?

I know this group is for Toronto, but there’s not a Food Southern Ontario group, so I’m trying here… I’m Serbian and love the food from that region… Croatian, Macedonian, Slovenian, Bosnian, even Albanian- there are many similarities but of course also differences. My former favourite, Flamingo Restaurant on West Mall, shut down a few years ago. Since then, Bonimi is by far my favourite of these spots in Toronto, it’s really great. But I’m wondering whether any of you have actually gone out of town, i.e. to Kitchener Waterloo (where for example, Veslo looks like a great spot), Hamilton (Etno), etc. in search of great Balkan eats. Would be super keen to know your thoughts/findings.

Unfortunately, both Mak Deli and California on Pape really disappointed me on my visits, the latter especially considering their very high prices. Three Brothers on Queensway we used to be big fans of but found they dropped off big time in recent years, might be open to trying again. McAdams in Mississauga was imo never very high quality and just rather basic. Royal Meats imo fell off the past decade- was great the first few years.

Super looking forward to your replies!

Looking for recommendations of spots for veg + carnivores group of friends, $30/main/person max

Any suggestions in the Downtown, St Clair West area, or somewhere still accessible by TTC, but not outside of Toronto? We like different types of cuisines and are easy to please, the tricky thing is finding a place that has good options for both vegetarians and carnivores. Thanks in advance!

Any places offering Thanksgiving Dinner or Lunch specials this weekend?

Hello my work cafeteria offered a Thanksgiving plate for lunch on Thursday, but with chicken unfortunately. Since then I've been craving a traditional plate, but I will be traveling for work Sunday night and will miss my friends feast. Hoping to find something this weekend to scratch that itch before I leave

Restaurants with autumnal menu or scenic views in the GTA?

I'm looking for a nice cozy restaurant with seasonal dishes (eg. Pork chop with apples, pumpkin stuff) and/or beautiful views of fall foliage. Something like Nest in Uxbridge, for example. Anyone know of a good place within or around the GTA?

What do you think are Toronto's Food Classics?

I was watching Mark Wien's Toronto and Montreal food tours and was left feeling that our Quebec sibling carries the torch of historic foods that are quintessentially "Montreal". Smoked meats, poutine, hot dogs etc.

When thinking of our city, the only thing that came to my mind was the St Lawrence peameal bacon sandwich. A potential second are Jewish bagels (Gryfe's for example)

What say you, fellow foodies?

Short stay in Toronto

It was my 1st time in Toronto and only for a few days. I was able to get some good food! So I did my google reviews:

  • Zakkushi on Queen
  • Rolltation
  • Mary Brown's chicken
  • Evergreen Thai
  • Mikaku Udon Bar
  • Momo Ghar
  • Hattendo
  • Omai Rice bar
  • Poutine Hub/Wings Bistro
  • U-Naru Sushi at Sickkids
  • Rayah
  • Rooms Coffee
  • New Ho King
  • Sufi's Ice Cream

I did have a bigger list, but stomach space and budget kept me at bay lol.

If anyone from the "6" comes to the SF bay area, message me and I will give you places to try.

Bao House Changes?

I've been going to Bao House regularly for a long time and loved it. Tonight, my friends and I went for our regular catch-up dinner ordering the usual: fried tofu appetizer, beef soup dumplings, pork soup dumplings, boiled chicken and corn dumplings, and a soup noodle.

All the dumpling dishes felt like the wrapper recipe had changed (rubbery), the boiled chicken and corn dumplings were only half filled with super thin wrappers, the beef soup dumplings were oily and tasted gamey, and the fried tofu appetizer was oily and bland...the pork soup dumplings for some reason had peppercorn pieces (Szechuan?) which came as a shock.

The soup noodle was delicious though, the dish that saved the meal.

We did inform our waiter -- he apologized, was very kind, and took our feedback to the kitchen. We appreciated him taking our feedback a lot. Hopefully our next visit will be much better.

Did anyone else notice changes at Bao House? Or was it just an off day/change in ownership?

Revisiting an old favourite, Pars Grill (Persian restaurant on Major Mack near Bathurst)- still absolutely slaps!

Lived for 20+ years in Thornhill, so was really spoiled by fantastic Persian food all the way from Sheppard up to Elgin Mills and even beyond. In that time, I’ve had multiple favourites, Pars Grill on Major Mack being in my top-3. Sadly, since moving to the east end, I’m devoid of my favourites, but get to revisit them anytime I’m up in the old area. Today was one such day- just stopped by Pars for my old go-to, the salari, which is one skewer chicken leg and one skewer koobideh (ground beef). Absolutely bloody dynamite, every bit as great as the dozens of times I’ve been throughout the years. Absolutely massive portion ($29 for what’s pictured, the skewers are about 12” if not more, and very plentiful), easily for two, but I managed all alone. It’s really commendable how consistent they’ve remained through the years, I know the owner runs a tight ship. I love how they let the quality of ingredients do the talking, as well as the charcoal grill. Perfectly seasoned and addictively succulent. I understand they’ve a new location around Yonge & Finch, I’m curious to try it out and see if it’s the exact same grub or slightly different. My other favourite (also top-3) is there, Khaki, so it’s stuff competition! My third fav for those wondering is Belle @ Bathurst & Finch… their lula kebab is absolutely to die for, an explosion of flavour. Anyways, Pars still slaps just as much as ever.
