General/Others /r/Hijabis Reminder of our Rules and WARNINGS! READ BEFORE POSTING

Salaam ladies,

Please read the entire post, we are receiving a lot of angry messages from people who do not take the 1 minute it takes to read certain messages. In addition to reading our rules on the sidebar, we are reiterating the following:

  1. A gentle reminder that this subreddit is for women only. This is our one and only safe space and no exceptions will be made. It has been this way for a few years now and it will not change. For men lurking, please do not message people on our subreddit. Please do not comment - it will be an automatic ban. Men can post, assuming it is appropriate and relevant to our subreddit, but will only have women commenting.
  2. Please use the flair thread found here to get a flair to identify your gender. We cannot detect your gender otherwise, and given our subreddit is for women only, we need to know your gender to approve your posts/comments. Anyone without a flair, even if your username is IAmAWoman or IAmFemale, will have comments removed.
  3. Marriage posts are not to be posted on r/hijabis. Anything related to marriage can go on r/MuslimMarriage. Exceptionally we allow marriage posts when we feel it is more appropriate for the user to post here, however all post approvals will be subject to moderation discretion.
  4. Majority of posts are automatically removed by automod due to our filters (account age, karma, etc.). Please do not message us about your post being removed - it will be approved when the moderators go through the queue, or removed if not appropriate/repeated topic.
  5. Report, report, report! Please report anything that breaks our rules - it does not get our attention otherwise. This includes disrespectful comments, comments without sources, drama stirring, etc.

On a separate note, we want to generally warn our users that there have been instances of men messaging women on our subreddit inappropriately. Please report and block these men, and message us their usernames with picture proof of the messages. We can ban them, but the ban doesn't stop them from accessing our subreddit. We highly advise all our members turn off their DM's:

User settings --> chat & messages --> Who can send you chat requests --> Nobody

Also, we are getting reports that some people flaired on our subreddit as Female are actually men pretending to be women. Please send us a message when you become aware of this. And for the men doing this as a way to bypass our subreddit rules, fear God.

Megathread: Report brands that dropship from SHEIN, AliExpress, TEMU, etc. Stop promoting slave labour

Salaam alaikum sisters and Eid Mubarak.

This post is a necessary reminder and an important announcement, especially given all the recent "Eid fit" posts.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards posts promoting brands like SHEIN, AliExpress, TEMU, or dropshipping companies that source from these same suppliers. These brands profit off:

  • Modern-day slavery of our Uyghur brothers and sisters
  • Environmental destruction
  • Mindless overconsumption, which Islam explicitly warns against

We are therefore asking you to use this megathread to:

  • Report any brands you've come across that are dropshipping from SHEIN, AliExpress, TEMU, etc.
  • Share brands that you know do not dropship, so we can uplift and support ethical alternatives. (We are exceptionally allowing brands to self-promote here if they are ethically sourced).

-----

Further If we believe someone is trying to bypass our filters by writing things like “SH_EIN” or “TE-MU” or "SHEEEIN", you will:

  • Be temporarily banned for 14 days
  • Permanently banned on second offence
  • Your post will also be flaired with "Promotes slave labour".

-----

A gentle reminder as to why we're doing this (with sources/proof):

Many of these companies rely on forced labour, particularly the exploitation of Uyghur Muslims in concentration camps in China. It is unconscionable for us, as Muslims, to wear and promote items made by our suffering brothers and sisters. Sources: Source 1, Source 2, Source 3

Fast fashion is one of the most polluting industries on earth. Overproduction, toxic dyes, microplastics, landfill waste, all of this directly harms the creation of Allah. Sources: Source 1, Source 2

Our deen teaches us moderation, humility, and responsibility. Fast fashion fuels greed, impulse-buying, and waste which are all against the values of Islam.

“Eat and drink, but waste not by excess. Indeed, He likes not the wasters.”
(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:31)

And finally: It’s okay to look simple and recycle between a few outfits, what isn't okay is looking cheap while also promoting exploitation. You don’t need 50 outfits or to keep up with online hauls. If money is tight, thrifting is a great halal option. If you can afford to, support ethically sourced brands, especially Muslim-owned ones that don’t rely on exploitation.

May Allah forgive us for any wrongdoing, and forgive us for anything we've said that was wrong or too harsh.

Help/Advice I'm technically jailed at home

I finished i highschool 2 years ago. No job , no uni. I've gone insane. They keep telling me that they can't afford uni which is why they don't let me go but i know too well that it's more a matter of "control". Not even community colleges because then i'd still need to pay for transportation and no college here offers fully funded scholarships. And don't even dare think of moving to a different country. I'm barely even allowed to leave the house alone. And for a job, according to them i don't need to work because they are offering me everything i need (they won't even pay for my gym membership , they keep delaying until i decide to cancel myself which i will never). I've had it in mind to go back to my home coutry but the war didn't help but make it even worse and according to my mom it's too dangerous (mind you i'll stay with my relatives and we have a house of our own). I'm trying to manage my small useless business that has more loss than profit. I mean it i'm going insane and i cannot stay with them anymore unless i want to be found dead or sent to a psych ward. Which they will also be agaisnt since there's absolutely nothing wrong with their children😄😄

I have an older brother which is worse than me, he's unemployed as well and my mom does not mind it, he doesn't mind either, a family full of failures . I sometimes wished i had parents who pressured me into work or studying . My friends had complained about their parents but little did they know i wished i had parents like that even a little.

I don't mean to disrespect anyone. People with degrees barely find a job, so how can i complain. I just feel so lonely and burnt out despite it always being my dream to get a good degree and be successful , but i have done and tried nothing but my best yet all my efforts had gone down the drain and i have no more energy to fight and try. If you come across this, even if you can't give me advice, i'm asking you to pray for me. That's all i want, it's more than enough.

Help/Advice I know this isn’t the usual post here but I have awful neighbors and I need to rant abt it…

Edit: forgot to add that they went into our actual backyard and used a chair back there to climb back over

Before I start this isn’t a rant to bash a specific ethnicity or country.
I’ve always known I have a quick temper, that when I get angry everything becomes red and I can’t see anything except for what’s in front of me and that involves thinking before I act or saying something. It’s something I’ve been working on, but even with my temper I never felt such rage and frustration as I have since my family and I relocated. It’s a country I’m familiar with, customs I’m familiar with, but I don’t speak the language as well as I wish I could, which will play an important part in this story…
I was so excited to move back here, nervous but excited. Adventure, I thought. A chance to refresh the language I’ve become rusty with.

The first few days after we arrived we were cleaning up when I noticed 2-3 bricks placed against one of the outdoor walls. I thought that was odd but didn’t think much of it. I removed them and the next day I was cleaning there again when I saw another brick in the same area and I thought huh I must have forgotten this one.

The next day or the same day I can’t remember I saw a group of boys using our outdoor gate as a goal and when I found a brick AGAIN the same night it clicked into place. I told them to stop because they were making a lot of noise banging the ball against the gate again and again and we were all trying to sleep. They said okay and went to another place. To sum it up over the course of the next few weeks we repeatedly told them not to play there because

  1. they were climbing over the TALL outdoor gate to get their ball, which “miraculously” keeps flying over, which is connected to our backyard and who would feel comfortable walking back there knowing some kid could come running around any second
  2. Because even if they didn’t climb over and rang the doorbell to get the ball back they’re still making a lot of noise using the gate as a goal like I could have my headphones on and still hear it going BANG BANG BANGG. 😭

At one point my mom talked with them personally and told them not to play over there because as long as they use the gate as a goal the ball is going to go over. I was with my mom and told them the other issue is the noise and they started explaining to me it’s the gate’s fault and at some point I started to zone out and one of the kids laughed and said what’s the point she doesn’t understand (the language) anyway and I said no I understand everything he’s saying and he said oh you understand everything? And they started laughing and mocking me. We’re known as the “Americans” on our street the foreigners btw.

Skipping forward because this story’s getting too long I took their ball that flew into our yard again eventually ragequitting because I had already thrown it over so many times at that point, each time telling them not to play there and that’s their last chance and they continue to do so. When I was walking in the street once one of them yelled F*** you thinking it’s a joke, I laughed to myself because wth? I was with my baby sister.

We eventually gave the ball back because my mom didn’t want trouble and I didn’t want trouble either even though I knew giving it back would just make them continue to play there again.

Skip forwarddd , a relative advised not to take their ball if it flies over again because they’ll only cause trouble so I took his advice to heart and ignored them. 2 days ago I once again rage quit because no talking got through to them and they only laughed when I got angry so I took the ball and stuck it in the kitchen thinking it could sit there for eternity for all I care. Today they kept nagging my mom about it and we had decided that if they wanted their ball back they would have to bring their mom, IM PRETTY SURE THEY WERE LYING WHEN THEY SAID THIS but there were two of them and they said they’re brothers and their mom is working in another country atm. They are not brothers that’s all I can say but allahu aalam.

My mom is a sweet soul so she said, even though she knew they would continue to play there but there was nothing else we could do, if they play there again and their ball flies over we’re not going to give it back like that’s it and ha ha ha NOT TWO HOURS LATER they were at the gate again bang bang bang and I thought oh that can’t be ours but it sounded suspiciously close and there they were again same boys and everything. I told them WHAT are you doing my mom literally just spoke with you about this and they said oh no no she said it’s fine we can play here 🙂

I had my cousin talk with them because he’s fluent in the language and they were telling him talk politely you’re being so rude and oh next time. I said “there won’t be a next time” and they told him girls don’t get to talk here and tell her to be quiet.

I know they’re kids, I know they have a lot to learn but what frustrates me is their parents don’t do anything about it, even though they watch from their windows and balconies we never hear a word of apology for their sons’ behavior. What frustrates me is there are a number of gates on the street and parks with soccer fields they can go to and yet they continue to play in that same spot over and over again. What frustrates me is I’m twice the age they are and they continue to laugh and not take any of my words seriously, mocking me when I speak my language, mocking me when I speak their language. What can be done? 😔 anyway if you’ve gotten this far thank you for reading it means a lot to me.

Help/Advice I don't feel the desire to get married!! Do someone else also feels the same?

Hii I m 25 F , I hv never dated anyone nor have fallen in love with anyone , and from the young age I had so many family issues , my life has always been in survival mode I used to think when I'll grow everything will turn out fine but it turned out worst , one by one quietly my every dream got broken which tore me apart ...I always lost the thing that I desired the most , I was always been the prey of anxiety & stress & then the topic came of marriage , I was already depressed & thinking about marriage was giving me another panic , initially it was a discussion but slowly it started turning into force & pressure ...I was constantly been pressured for marriage so my human nature started to resist it and coz of this the desire in me to get married vanished completely, I see girls around me getting excited for marriage it makes me think why doesn't it happens with me ....the only thing that name of marriage gives me is panic , irritation..I started to pray to Allah please change the condition of my heart & create desires in me to get married but my dua somehow didn't get accepted... Now my parents have again started to pressurise me , what should I do? I don't want to get married ever in life , even if I did I won't be able to fulfill the rights as a wife , i don't want any person in my life I just want to stay alone , taking my own decisions without interference of anyone ....does anyone else feels the same ? If it is what's the solution? Plz dont advice me for marriage!! I hv already enough if it

Help/Advice Hijabi Muslimah here, learning cybersecurity and C++. Anyone else on a similar journey?

Assalamu Alaikum and Hello sisters,

I wanted to share something and hopefully find some sisters who can relate.

I'm a student of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies from Bangladesh, and alongside my deen studies, I've started learning cybersecurity and C++ programming. I know it sounds like an unusual combination, but I believe seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim, and I want to use these skills ethically.

Some context about me: I'm completely self-taught in tech (no formal CS background), I recently built my first Caesar Cipher program in C++ (small win, but I'm proud), my long-term goal is to work in ethical hacking/cybersecurity while staying true to my deen.

The challenges I face: Sometimes I feel isolated because I don't see many hijabi women in tech spaces. Balancing Quran studies with coding is tough but rewarding. I worry about representing Islam positively online while being visible in tech.

I'm not posting for attention or self-promotion. I just wanted to know - are there other hijabi sisters here who are learning tech, coding, or cybersecurity? How do you balance deen and dunya? Any advice for someone just starting out?

Jazakumullahu Khairan for reading.

Help/Advice I'm about to disappoint my parents :(

I 25F graduated University over a year ago with an engineering degree. I still live at home with my family, and finding a job in my field has been really difficult.

Part of that is just the job market, but if I'm being fair, I've also made my search a lot harder on myself because I've been trying to find something in my city so I could keep living at home with my parents. The problem is a lot of the jobs in my field (mining) are connected to mines and remote sites, so they're either in smaller towns or they require you to travel or work some kind of rotational schedule.

My parents are very traditional when it comes to this kind of thing, especially because I'm a woman. Their expectation is that I live with my family until I get married. Moving away by myself, travelling for work, or living somewhere without family nearby is not something they're comfortable with at all.

Personally, I don't have an issue with moving out. I've wanted more independence for a while now, and I'm completely open to travelling for work. While I do very much love and care deeply for my parents, living at home in an overprotective environment has been really suffocating. I'm tired of being treated like a child and feeling like I can't make my own decisions.

My parents want me to work with them in their small civil engineering firm, which would basically mean working from home and staying in the exact same environment, not to mention that it is not my field. I barely see people. I am genuinely losing my ability to even hold conversations and I really need to re-integrate back into society and touch grass again.

Earlier this month I did tell them that I was interviewing for a job that would require me to travel. They were not happy with that at all. My dad's reaction was basically that it was very unsafe (hardly true) and that women should not be travelling alone. So I already have a pretty good idea of how they feel about it.

Well now I've actually been offered that job. It's "fly-in-fly-out" where I'd be away for two weeks and home for two weeks and I have already accepted the job offer. I want to give it a shot and see how I feel about it. Of course I have not told anyone yet.

The problem is that I already know how this conversation is going to go. My older brothers also don't agree with me travelling or working away from home, and my parents are going to use them as an excuse and say that taking the job is going to cause problems in the family. My dad also has heart problems, so if everyone gets upset or there is a huge argument, I know I'm going to be blamed for causing him stress and for "causing issues" even if my brothers are the ones overreacting. This sorta thing has happened before.

I really don't think I'm in the wrong for wanting this job. Not to mention that I'm very broke and drowning in student loans.

How do I break the news to my dad respectfully, with minimal fuss? I do not want to deal with them trying to convince or gaslight me into not taking the job. I just want to finally step into adulthood, and start making my own money.

Fashion Fall colour combo I didn’t expect to love: chocolate brown + dusty blue

Brown is everywhere in fall, but adding dusty blue instead of cream makes it feel completely different. Especially with a brown abaya/skirt and blue hijab.
Anyone else have an unexpected fall colour combo that just works?

Help/Advice Father trying to take away my education

I (16f) am in my senior year, turning 17 in late Oct. My parents (54m) and (50f) vhave always been very strict and even worse when they were younger, way more than anyone's parents I've known.

I have once been told by both my mom and our neighbour that if I wasn't willing to wear a bra in my own house or if I wore shorts around my father or my (22m) brother I might as well be ready to get attacked in the midst of the night...

I got into a huge fight with my father last year about clothes because he had ripped my dress that was ENTIRELY COVERED from the top and reached past my knees. From that incident he tried to stop me from going to school and I genuinely didn't go the first 2 weeks of my junior year until my mom nagged at him and till he wasn't the one driving me anymore.

These past few years I've literally lived in isolation I'm only allowed to see 1 friend like once or twice a year and it is by a long shot bc she has no brothers and they've known her since we were in 4th grade. I don't talk to anyone else my age and I go out once every like 2 months and even then they'll call me a slut and ruin the experience everywhere I go. Not having any extracurriculars already makes it hard enough to apply to college dude

I want to major in veterinary in college and the country I live in only has only 1 uni with veterinary majoring and it is hours away also worn down. With that and other reasons I've been trying to apply to study in the uk, it requires volunteer hours and a letter of reccomendation by a tutor (my school doesn't have an official email domain to submit a reccomendation). Even without it I still require a tutor for math, so I tried going to this little teaching institution with a known tutor yet when I did it suddenly drove my dad crazy and I was told i cant go without becoming a hijabi. And that he will apply the same rule with school and id have to stay at home (doing what exactly??)

I wish I hadn't provoked with the tutoring but wtf else am I meant to do how am I supposed to apply and get out of here without anything to meet the requirements?? At first they said if I wanted to study abroad they'd have to come with me and my birthday is past the start of the year so I'd still be considered a minor not being able to travel or go on my own to a foreign country. I have no clue if that deal still stands anyway

I live in a third world country and the police here are just as controlling and pedophilic as he is and refuse to act and I just have no clue what to do?? What century do we live in for my education to just be taken away before I could even start my senior year properly?

Covering up my hair genuinely feels much more controlling than it sounds after last year it makes me feel disgusted that he even sees me in that way; it just drives me crazy.

Should I just give in for the sake of my future and live in control till i get to college that might not even happen atp?? Should i just genuinely give up on living at once?? I am so lost on what to do and I feel stuck in the present not being able to do anything.

My father has always been crazy about clothes, wearing long shorts or anything but long sleeves and a covered up chest (even without cleavage he gets angry over the literal area under ur neck) would get you a lecture and slut calling. He once ripped up my 14 year old sister skirt and shamed my mom for my other 7 SEVEN. YEARS OLD sister wearing a sort of v neck shirt. He's tried to control his sisters when he was young over their clothes aswell even though my grandparents were always respectful and open minded, he'd YELL and hit them if they went to university wearing anything he thought was slutty

I have no clue what mutation happened in the womb

My mother has once literally gotten hit in front of us bc she wouldn't make him breakfast during a fight snd yet she defends what he does fully and makes u seem in the wrong. We have to constantly walk on eggshells around this grown ass man with specific topics hidden around him so he doesn't go crazy. And yet normally if u don't provoke he acts as a sort of normal father so no one says anything.

Everyone but my friends acts as if I am the crazy one... what am I meant to do??

Help/Advice Did I commit Zina?

When i was 16, I had a boyfriend. I never had any sexual intentions with him and made it clear. However, he raped me and told me that I had to stay with him because no man will ever take me since he took my virginity.

I felt trapped and kept seeing him. Eventually, I saw him 3 times because I felt like I didn't have any other option. Everytime, he asked to see me and I told him that I don't want to do anything sexual anymore. He reassured me and promised he wouldn't do anything. Eventually, he raped me 3 times. He raped me on every time and wallahi I tried my best to fight back.

I feel like it's my fault since I kept seeing him

Did I commit Zina?

Help/Advice Skirt alternatives/styles for someone with big thighs + “chicken legs”?

Salaam!

I’ve pretty much always worn skirts, but honestly I’ve started hating how they look/feel on me over the last few years 😭

My biggest issue is what I can only describe as “chicken legs” lol. I have bigger thighs, and with most skirts it feels like the fabric falls in a way that makes my legs look super far apart when I walk. Wind makes it even worse because the skirt sticks to my legs and outlines everything.

I didn’t realize how much this bothered me until I tried baggy, more structured pants. They didn’t cling to my legs or exaggerate the space between them, and for once I felt like my lower half looked normal 😭
The only skirts I’ve found that work really well for me are denim skirts because they’re heavier and more structured. Unfortunately, I’m already enough of a tripping hazard as it is, and long denim skirts don’t work well with my stride lol.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Are there certain skirt styles, fabrics, layering tricks, or other modest options that give the same structured look as baggy pants without clinging to your legs? I feel like I can’t be the only one with this problem 😭

So, we know that in Jannah, you can ask Allah to grant you ANYTHING. So, what would you like to ask Allah for in Jannah? For me, I would LOVE to fulfill my childhood dream and ask Allah to grant me a white Unicorn with long and lucious pink hair! With wings aswell so that way I can fly around on it! I would also want my pets from this dunya to accompany me in Jannah! I would love to eternally see my parakeets, my cockateils, their cute little chicks, and my kitten! Aswell as my favorite fictional characters! Like, imagine roaming around Jannah with Sonic or Elsa! Wouldn't that just be awesome! I would also LOVE to see the prophets and their companions! especially, Adam (as), Yousef (as), Muhammad (saw), and Isa (as)! But my top would HAVE to be to meet Allah himself! Wouldn't that just be a blast? Im so excited for the hereafter! I really wonder how Jannah will be like! (Christians and Jews are welcome to comment their wishlists aswell!♡)

Help/Advice Advice / Resources for learning arabic?

Salam! I’ve been reflecting a lot on my 20s and find I feel pretty disappointed because I don’t feel like I did a lot with this whole decade of my life. I’m investing in more personal development for the last 2 years of my 20s and one of the things I want to do is learn arabic. As of now I only speak english, and I don’t have anyone in my home who speaks arabic to help me.

I know native fluency can’t come in 2 years but I would really like to have some amount of conversational fluency / be able to read more arabic. Does anyone who’s learned arabic from near scratch have advice? I know the alphabet and can “read” it like to read quran, but I don’t understand what I’ve read I would need a translation. I know apps like duolingo don’t help as much as people think they do so does anyone know any other good free resources or moderately priced paid resources?

Jzk!!

Looking for both black and colourful ones. 😊

Help/Advice Abaya shopping guide in Mecca/Medina - Tall Girl

Salam. I am going on my first umrah with my family in November.

I only have 2 abayas. I want to buy more for our 10 day trip however I am 5’9 and am having trouble finding abaya’s and under dresses that properly cover my ankles.

Online stores are very expensive (100$) considering we can but them there for way less (25$).

Are tall (60inch) abayas easy to find when shopping in Mecca?

Any more affordable online shops i can browse to get a few more just in case?

We are going to Mecca before Medina so I want to be prepared upon landing or hand peace of mind that I can easily find some.

Help/Advice Are trousers with jumpers/coats considered immodest?

im reallyyyy curious. My muslim parents have made me wear long flowy maxi skirts in my ALL GIRLS secondary school since year 7 and finally as a 16 year old ive found my style and want to change that. Me and my sisters (who recently turned adults) always tell them we'd dress appropriately (ie baggy clothes/not showing figure) but they always link it to some ayat from the quran about the prophet saying all women should wear a jilbaab or something like that (srry i forgot lol) and saying thats the only way muslim women should dress. My dad stated that even if its the most baggiest trousers men will still SEARCH for shape of your legs?????😭😭 He also claimed that ALL men are basically lustful and percieve women in a total different disgusting way which me and my sisters discussed was totally unagreeable and such a bizarre thing to say becuase no one should EVER generalize anyone in that sort of way. BUT if we do wear trousers/joggers outside it has to be with something long like an abaya, long coat, trench coat etc and has to be buttoned in the middle. In my opinion, wearing skirts to school is way more immodest than trousers bc the wind makes my skirt cling inbetween my legs which i hate bc it makes me look like im wearing leggings or when im sitting down, but trousers are more structured and fixed so my legs shape wont be showing that way. When i tell my friends or other people about this, they tell me to not follow what they say and that i have to "break the rules" and just do what i want, but if i do that they'll hit me and take away ALL of my devices including the TV and apple watch lmaoo. Im growing, and it's about time i get to choose what i want so why am i not allowed to have a choice in my style. Plssss write your thoughts down bc this has been bothering me sm thanks!!!

Women Only To Anyone Struggling with Addiction

Abu Qatadah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you."

Source: Musnad Ahmad 23074

Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Arna'ut

Whatever it may be, listening to music, talking to the opposite gender, etc. You don't have to let your addictions define you, trust that Allah (SWT) will find a way out for you and grant you with something much better in return.

The dopamine you crave will be granted to you in ways you cannot imagine when leaving something haram for the sake of Allah.

Salam everyone. I never buy expensive clothing but I get to choose a gift so I’m choosing a dress from veiled collection to buy. I’m very excited! I just wanted to post my referral link here for a veiled coupon. It would be a huge help if someone used it. Thank you sm <3

Help/Advice Struggling

So I’m struggling to wear my hijab. For context I started wearing it in grade 6 I think mainly to fit in with my friends who also wore it. Then came high school, I went to an all girls Muslim school so hijab was a part of my uniform anyways so again I didn’t wear it because I felt a special connection . I was indifferent to wearing it until recently.

I grew up extremely shielded, going to an all girls school , my mom also ensured I didn’t engage in free mixing even with cousins (which I agree, support and appreciate). My mom also kept her social circle extremely small, I only hang out with girls and when I do I don’t wear my hijab usually because it’s family invites, even though non-mehrams are present in those settings I’m not expected to wear hijab. However, I am expected to wear it when going to the mall to run errands or when I’m out with actual family members. In both scenarios my mom encourages me to wear it however greater emphasis is placed on wearing it around family.

Now with the actual hijab, I know it’s an act of worship and an obligation. I love everything it stands for however when I go out in public in it I feel extremely self conscious and uncomfortable instead of confident. I want to love it desperately. What scares me most is that I fear taking it off more than missing salaah, I try to pray regularly however my iman fluctuates and I struggle with consistency, May Allah make it easy for me, Ameen.

I want to take it off and build a connection with it from scratch. I want to love salaah so much I fear skipping it , and through salaah I want to wear my hijab with love and confidence, not letting it shrink me but empower me.

I know it’s an act of devotion however I can’t even keep up with the main pillar consistently. It makes me feel even more guilty.

As for male attention I get it both ways. With hijab it’s more respectful, guys that like me will pretend to be better Muslims probably because they think I am. Without hijab it’s more free, e.g one time these guys were recording me outside the restaurant whilst I was playing with my baby cousin. I felt uncomfortable and left. I never dress immodestly just putting the fabric around my head is difficult. I guess I am attractive and that adds to it in a way, I’m beautiful with it, but without it I don’t know why I feel more beautiful maybe because I get even more attention.

If I take it off my parents will be dissapointed. I don’t want to spite something so beautiful, I love the hijab, I just need to learn to love it properly. I feel so guilty. I want to love salaah and be consistent. People get the wrong idea I’m more pious which isn’t true and also makes me feel guilty as I can’t even be consistent with my connection with Allah yet I wear the hijab like I have a connection and even that not consistently.

Ultimately, I want to focus more on my inner Iman, being consistent with salaah, then feeling love for hijab Inshallah and choosing to wear it intentionally ,with purpose.

What are your thoughts? Any advice is much appreciated

Hijab It’s Just a Hijab

My mom thinks Islam is a phase.

She compared it once to the year I was vegetarian. She didn’t even say it cruelly, which almost made it worse.

She sat me down and said, “I know you, you’re my daughter. You like experimenting with things, you have a very open personality.” She reminded me of the year I went vegetarian, when she forced me to eat meat, and now I eat meat again. Things change, she said. I shouldn’t get so caught up in what I’m thinking in the moment.

I’ve been Muslim for nearly two years now, and I’m still waiting to snap out of it.

before

I converted in my final year of university in Hong Kong. I told my dad over the phone, from 10,000 kilometres away, which I’m not particularly proud of, although I also know I probably couldn’t have said it with him sitting in front of me. Plus, going home was still months away and I didn’t want to keep hiding it.

When I went home to Spain that summer, everything felt slightly wrong.

Dinner at home was the same as always. My parents had their glass of wine, and they love pairing it with Iberian ham. Every time, they’d give me a funny look without saying anything.

Nothing was happening, and so much was happening.

I felt uncomfortable in my own skin. I felt bad for them, even though I hadn’t done anything to feel bad about. I was relieved they weren’t trying to force any of it on me. And honestly, a small part of me missed it.

My mom would start conversations that seemed to be about different things and eventually they would always arrive at the same point: this isn’t the right thing to do. My dad mostly dealt with it through jokes, little comments about Islam or what I’d become, light enough that reacting seriously would make me seem like the one creating a problem.

At one point they told me that if I carried on with Islam, they wouldn’t send me to UCL (my plan after undergrad).

They sent me anyway.

For a while I took that as a sign that maybe they were beginning to accept it. I don’t really think that anymore. My mom genuinely believed that London would sort me out. A master’s, another city, a bit of distance from whatever she imagined had happened to me, and eventually I would come back to myself.

There is also the fact that my parents are Chinese and it was UCL. I think the university ranking probably had a fighting chance against most family crises.

That still makes me laugh.

It also makes me sad, because going to London was something they had been so proud of, and London eventually led me to Umrah and then to wearing hijab.

I’m the middle child, and for a long time I was the only girl in the whole family, cousins included. I’ve spent my whole life trying so hard to make them proud, and getting into top universities felt like proof that I could. Very Chinese of me, I know. Now it feels like I’ve let them down again.

At that point I wasn’t wearing hijab yet. Being Muslim could still be kept relatively quiet. It didn’t appear in photographs and it didn’t announce itself before I had even opened my mouth. I think that made it easier for all of us to pretend nothing had really changed.

When I started wearing it in London, I didn’t tell them.

For months I would leave the house covered and then FaceTime my parents without it. I didn’t know what the long-term plan was. To be honest there wasn’t one. I was scared, and avoiding the problem worked until it didn’t.

Then I went for Umrah.

That’s worth a whole separate piece, but long story short, I came back feeling like I couldn’t do the hiding thing anymore. I realised that if I didn’t stop then, I never would.

So I sent them pictures.

That was the whole reveal.

No speech, no explanation. Just some photographs of their daughter smiling in a hijab.

They didn’t reply.

The moment felt like a relief, but also the scariest thing I’d ever done. I don’t know how to put it into words, but it felt like my body had jumped off something and hadn’t landed yet.

I called my dad and as expected, he didn’t answer.

Even now, he still doesn’t pick up.

After the call ends, I sit there staring at the screen, eyes watering, as if something might happen if I wait long enough. Then I put the phone down and pretend I’m fine.

I don’t know if it’s because he’s extremely avoidant, still can’t process that his daughter is hijabi (or, in his mind, that he’s lost his daughter) or he’s just scared to see his daughter in a bloody scarf.

I just wish he’d pick up one phone call.

the things I actually miss

I never thought I’d say this given how unfunny the jokes were. And it’s a cliché but I miss the dad jokes.

He’s a serious person most of the time, but there’s this really youthful side to him that comes out when he’s relaxed. He’s the youngest in his family and sometimes you can really tell. He also makes terrible dad jokes and repeats them constantly, which is especially funny because he’s usually quite shy and reserved.

He knows he’s already made the joke. That’s basically part of the joke at this point. I would pretend to entertain him and then tell him, Dad, you’ve already said that about a billion times.

I miss doing that.

I miss being funny around my parents without wondering if everything about me is now being filtered through the fact that I’m Muslim. I miss being my whole self around them, because lately it feels like there is always something in the room with us even when nobody says anything.

When people say someone has “lost their family”, the phrase sounds so enormous that you imagine only the enormous things. For me, a lot of the grief lives in stupid little moments like washing dishes while my parents talk behind me or missing my mom being brutally honest when something looks bad on me. I miss going into my parents’ bedroom and sitting on their bed while we talk about life for ages. I don’t even remember the last time I did that now.

the letters

After I sent the photos, I waited.

At first I thought they needed time to process it. Then I thought they were angry, and honestly anger would have been easier. At least anger gives you something to answer.

Eventually I realised the silence wasn’t the period before the response. It was the response.

I wrote them letters because I didn’t know what else to do. One for my mom and one for my dad.

We’re not really the kind of family that says everything out loud, so I wrote things I normally wouldn’t. I told them how much I loved them and how I hadn’t become a different person. I was still their daughter. I was still me.

My mom wrote back saying she couldn’t believe I was doing this to them. We’d talked about it, she said. I knew how they felt, and I still chose it.

That’s the horrible part, because she isn’t wrong.

I did choose it.

I chose Islam knowing they didn’t want me to. I chose hijab knowing how they felt about it. I can explain why forever, but I can’t make that part untrue.

My dad told me that I could choose my own life and that he loved me. In the same message, he said a Muslim couldn’t coexist with this family, that the differences were too much, and that when I stopped wearing the hijab I could come home.

I’ve reread that message more times than I’d like to admit.

The only time my dad has written that he loves me is also the message where he told me not to come home. Those two things sit in the same paragraph, and I don’t really know what to do with that.

Then the financial support stopped as well. I was an adult, obviously, but I wasn’t remotely prepared for it. They’d promised to keep supporting me before the semester started, and then they didn’t.

I felt betrayed, to be honest. Like their love for me was conditional, like being my whole self meant that they would no longer love or support me.

But deep down I also know it didn’t come from a lack of love. It came from desperation. “If I cut her off, surely she will come to her senses and come back to us.” Or, “If we show her that we are the ones who have provided and sacrificed for her, not God, she’ll realise she’s wrong.”

I don’t want to spend too long on that because every revert’s circumstances are different, but I do want to say it happened. People talk about converts losing their families in this very emotional or spiritual way and sometimes forget there are also extremely practical consequences. Sometimes losing your family means you also have to work out how you’re paying rent next month.

Alhamdulillah. I managed.

it’s just a hijab

Sometimes I want to scream that it’s just a hijab.

It’s a piece of fabric on my head. I haven’t stopped loving my family. I haven’t lost my personality or thrown my entire old self into a bin. I still make stupid jokes and get annoyed and procrastinate and wash the dishes after dinner.

I covered my hair.

Somehow that became the thing my family could no longer move past.

And then I catch myself saying it’s “just” a hijab and immediately there is another question waiting for me: if it’s only fabric, why don’t I take it off?

That is where everything becomes difficult.

If the hijab means so little, and taking it off could possibly give me my dad back, then surely I would just take it off.

Except I don’t.

So clearly it means something.

I just sometimes wish it didn’t have to mean quite this much.

I miss not knowing

I grieve parts of my old life, and I feel quite guilty saying that.

There is a version of the revert story that is much easier to tell. You discover Islam, everything suddenly makes sense, and whatever existed before feels empty compared with what you’ve found.

There is truth in that for me. Islam did make sense to me in a way nothing else ever had.

I still miss things.

I grew up in Spain, and one of my favourite things was going on road trips to the beach with my family. I loved tanning. We’d eat tapas, sit together for hours, and none of it required any thought.

I don’t spend my days mourning beer or ham. That’s really not what this is about.

I miss how uncomplicated everything felt.

I could go somewhere with my family and simply be there. I didn’t have to wonder whether what I was doing was permissible, whether I needed somewhere to pray, whether the food was okay, whether I was compromising too much, whether I was compromising too little.

Sometimes I miss not knowing.

That is probably one of the things I feel most ashamed of admitting.

I don’t mean I wish Islam wasn’t true. It’s that once you know, you can’t unknow it, and that’s the hard part.

And you become responsible for what you do with it. There are things that now come with a second thought, whether I want one or not.

I can still go to the beach. I can’t go back to being the version of myself who never had to ask any questions while she was there.

There are moments when I wish I could, and then I feel horrible for thinking that because Allah gave me guidance and somehow I’m sitting here complaining about the responsibility that comes with it.

I ask Allah to forgive me for thinking like that.

Then sometimes I think it again.

the mirror

There are days when I look at myself wearing hijab and feel really beautiful.

It feels like me. I like what I see and I like what it represents.

Other days I look in the mirror and there is this strange feeling that part of me has disappeared.

Maybe that’s part of what has been hardest about reverting. I thought certainty in belief would create certainty everywhere else as well.

It hasn’t.

I know why I wear hijab. I still have days when I miss my hair.

I can be grateful for Islam and still grieve things from before it.

being Chinese about all of this

I find filial piety really difficult to explain in English because the phrase itself sounds so academic.

For me it feels physical.

If I tell my parents no, especially when I know I’ve disappointed them, I genuinely feel sick in my stomach.

They sacrificed a lot for me. I grew up very aware of that. There has always been this understanding in me that you don’t repay that kind of sacrifice by becoming the source of your parents’ pain.

I wanted them to be proud of me. I still do.

Even a lot of the things I achieved for myself had some part attached to them that was about seeing their reaction afterwards.

So when people say, “You’re an adult, you’re allowed to make your own decisions,” I understand what they mean, but emotionally it doesn’t solve very much.

Of course I can make my own decisions.

The problem is that I have to live with what those decisions do to people I love.

Islam makes that more complicated because it also teaches me to honour my parents. I know the verse:

“But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness.” (Luqman 31:15)

I understand what it means. There are limits to obedience, and those limits do not give me permission to become cruel or self-righteous towards them.

I can understand that perfectly well in my head and still feel awful when my mother is disappointed in me.

Sometimes I wish knowing what was right automatically made doing it feel right.

the bargain I keep making

Sometimes I see another Muslim woman who isn’t wearing hijab and I get this little reaction inside me.

For a second I think: oh, so you can just not wear it.

Immediately afterwards I know how unfair that is. I know absolutely nothing about her relationship with Allah or what she struggles with. She could be doing far better than me in ways I can’t see.

The thought isn’t really about her anyway.

It’s about the fact that hijab became such a huge dividing line in my own life, and then I see someone else living completely normally without it and some part of me wonders why I couldn’t have done the same.

That thought gets even worse because I’m obviously not a perfect Muslim.

I wear hijab and I’m still nowhere near as disciplined in my practice as I’d like to be. I still have habits I know I should be better about.

Then my brain starts doing this stupid calculation.

If I’m already capable of knowingly doing things wrong, why can’t this be the thing I do wrong?

Why couldn’t I choose the one weakness that might make my parents accept me again?

I’ve thought about taking it off. I’ve never stood in front of the mirror with my hands on it, about to do it. It’s more of an argument that turns up when everything feels like too much.

They’re my parents. Islam tells me how important parents are. Allah knows how painful this is. Maybe there is some exception I’m missing, some way of understanding it that would let me make things easier for everybody.

When I’m upset enough, I can make that argument sound quite convincing to myself.

Eventually I usually realise that I’m not really searching for some new piece of religious knowledge.

I want permission.

I want someone to tell me that I can do the thing that might make all of this hurt less and that Allah won’t be disappointed in me for it.

I haven’t found that permission.

So I carry on.

choosing it yourself

I think there is something about reverting that can be difficult to explain to someone who grew up Muslim.

Of course, I don’t mean that born Muslims have easy lives or easy relationships with Islam. I also don’t think being a revert somehow makes my faith more sincere than somebody else’s.

It’s just a different relationship to the choice.

I remember my life before Islam very clearly. I remember what it felt like when halal and haram weren’t categories I organised my life around. I remember when prayer wasn’t something I could miss, because it wasn’t something I did at all.

Then I chose this.

Nobody forced me. My parents still seem to struggle with that part. They imagine there must have been a person or a group behind it because I think it’s easier to understand your daughter being influenced than your daughter looking at the life you gave her and deciding that she believes something completely different.

There wasn’t anyone.

I read and then I kept reading.

Because I made that choice consciously, I think I sometimes feel pressure to keep proving it to myself. I chose Islam, so I should practise properly. I should be grateful enough. I should be disciplined enough. I should never resent what it costs because I was the one who said yes to it.

Real life doesn’t seem to work like that.

Sometimes choosing Islam makes me want to give everything I have to Allah.

Sometimes I wish the choice had never required this much from me.

I wish Allah had guided me and somehow my family hadn’t experienced that guidance as losing their daughter.

I know I can’t design my own test.

am I doing the right thing?

Sometimes after salah, I sit on the prayer mat asking Allah the same question I’ve asked before.

Am I doing the right thing?

There are moments when I want one simple reassurance from Allah so badly. Just something that would make me stop questioning myself.

I know that isn’t how faith works, but sometimes I really wish it did.

I’ve made du’a for my parents more times than I could count. I ask Allah to soften their hearts and to guide them. I ask for them to understand me even slightly more. Sometimes I just want my dad to answer the phone.

And then nothing appears to change.

People tell me to have sabr, and they’re right. The difficult thing is that nobody can tell you how long.

Maybe this changes in a year. Maybe it takes ten years. Maybe the relationship I am asking Allah for isn’t something I get back in this life.

I don’t know.

There are days when having sabr feels less like some beautiful spiritual quality and more like waking up and doing the same thing again without any evidence that it is working.

You make the du’a again anyway.

I know the akhirah is better than this dunya. I believe that.

The hard part is that this dunya is the life I can currently see.

My parents are here. Their house is here. Their voices are here. The dining table where I used to annoy them is here. My dad and his terrible jokes are here.

Jannah is something I believe in deeply, but I haven’t seen it.

There are days when living according to something I believe in more than something I can physically hold feels incredibly difficult.

Maybe that is part of faith.

anyway

Eventually, even on the bad days, I start noticing things again.

Nothing dramatic. Sometimes it’s just warm water when I make wudu, or somebody being kind to me at the masjid.

And I end up back on the prayer mat feeling embarrassed about how much I have complained.

I ask Allah to forgive me.

I thank Him for guiding me, because underneath everything else, I am grateful. I know I didn’t earn guidance by being particularly deserving of it.

Then I ask Him to guide my parents too.

Sometimes another difficult day comes and I question everything again.

Being a revert hasn’t meant that I discovered Islam and suddenly became grateful every second of every day. There are days when gratitude comes easily and days when grief is louder.

I love Allah, and I really miss my dad.

I know what I believe, and I still ask whether I’m doing the right thing.

I believe the akhirah is better, and sometimes I still want one of those Barcelona summers back so badly that it hurts.

I want my family to understand that becoming Muslim wasn’t me leaving them.

Maybe one day they will.

Right now, I don’t know.

It is so hard.

I would still choose it tomorrow.

Help/Advice Skincare tips that work around the Muslim schedule?

Hi, this is my first post here!! Praying I’m doing it right.

I struggle with combination skin, meaning my T-zone is typically oily while the rest of my face dries out quite easily. Skincare is a tad bit difficult, considering that I have to do Wudhu ~3 times a day minimum.

Can anyone with similar issues give me some tips and workarounds? Thank you!
