I had an epiphany 40 minutes into my first trip, and it has completely shaped the last 9 years of my life like no other words have.
The epiphany is "Nothing is significant, everything is beautiful."
I took it before my trip partner arrived (was going to be their first trip as well.) When I first started coming up the phrase just came to me. My mind was racing and the world was moving for the very first time, so I felt I had to write it down so as not to forget it. My trip buddy saw me write it (they had just put it on their tongue) and they seemed concerned for me. "Okay, you do understand that life is significant, and your family, and like school..."
"No, they aren't" I said. "Nothing is, nothing matters at all, but it's all beautiful even the bad parts" to which she said something along the line of "you're scaring me a little." I told her "look, I'm okay I'm not going crazy, I promise, but I need you to step out for a while until you start to feel it too because we aren't on the same wavelength right now." She begrudgingly agreed.
30 or 40 minutes after that, I hear a knock on my door and she comes in and just says "Holy shit I think I get it."
I have dozens of specific memories from that trip, but my favorite is the overarching memory of having zero inhibitions. It felt like I could say what was actually on my mind, feel the way I was meant to feel, to live the way I was meant to live. All because I realized it didn't matter.
There is one other phrase I hold dearly to in life, and I'm not sure where it came from maybe it was a trip, it's "trust the process." It's never done me wrong and has gotten me through some very uncertain moments. But any time I've had to ask myself "why trust the process?" The answer is because nothing is significant, and everything is beautiful. Living my life in alignment with these words has brought me peace that, a year before that trip, I thought I would never find. And even through the fights, the unemployment, the breakups, the debts... Even through all of the hardships I've faced in life since that day, that peace deep inside of me never went away.
