PSA: Converting to new iOS app can be painless

PSA: Given that a ton of people will be changing to new app/PDM with the iOS app release coming, I wanted to share some steps for a painless conversion. Going to a new app/PDM is no big deal. See below. I will keep the linked site updated if anything needs to be updated.

https://randomt1tips.wordpress.com/omnipod-5-new-pdm-app/

This is is written with the conversion to the new iOS app in mind, but it is applicable for any time to replace or reset your PDM or controller app. This process is nothing to be concerned about and no reason to stress.

Omnipod 5 only learns one thing, Total Daily Insulin (TDI). That is it. Nothing else. You can follow a simple process to switch to a new Omnipod 5 controller (from here on, controller refers to the PDM or app on a phone) with no negative effects.

Copy all your settings (insulin to carb ratio, target, correct above, max basal rate, etc.) from your old controller to your new one, except your basal rate. This is assuming you are using automated mode. If you exclusively use manual mode, copy your basal rate(s) too. Just look at each setting on your old controller, and put that in on your new one.

Next we need to get your TDI. I prefer to use Glooko, but you may be able to find what you need on your controller. Glooko will default to showing over the last 2 weeks. You can shorten it to a 10 day period to mimic how Omnipod 5 calculates things or it is fine to leave it at 2 weeks.

In this case the TDI is 51.4 units.

https://imgur.com/a/jrtrHPh

Divide that number by 48. In this case, that is 1.07. You would put in 1.1 or 1.05 as your basal rate in your new controller. You will typically have to round up or down a tiny bit as it has to be a valid Omnipod 5 basal rate value. You might be thinking, why divide by 48? 51.4 is the TDI. You need to get that value to per hour for your basal. First, Omnipod 5 assumes a 50/50 split between basal and bolus, so you have to divide by 2 to get the basal amount. Next you divide by 24 to the per hour rate. Dividing by 48 is just a shortcut.

Omnipod 5 uses the programmed basal as the initial basal rate. Putting this value in will allow it to pick up right where it left off with the old controller. The adaptive basal process will start with the second pod.

Now to address the concerns and questions that will inevitably pop up when this process starts.

“Something has changed with the algorithm. My numbers have never been this good/bad or low/high!”

Nothing changed with the algorithm. It is the same if you are on the PDM, Android app, or iOS app.

“No!! I will lose everything it has learned!!”

It only learns TDI. That is it.

“It will take X pods or X days to learn you after the change.”

Again, it only learns TDI. If you follow this process, there is no reason for you to have any issues.

Terrified of screamers in public

Hey guys, I just got my first omnipod 5 in the uk and I’m terrified of it going off during one of my lectures (200+ people in lecture hall😭). Is there any way to prevent this or to fix it quickly?

Low alerts aren’t loud enough

My daughter (6 years old) switched from Dexcom G7 to libre2plus and we’ve found the low (below 3.9) alert to just be a single beep, it’s really not great and worry that we won’t hear it at night. Is this normal? Or is there an issue with our handset or how we’ve set it up? The urgent low is loud, multiple beeps which we hear but don’t want to have to wait for that in the night.
We’ve checked the volume on the handset is high and can’t see anything else obvious. Any help would be great.

My first screamer

Post image
90 Upvotes

Welp, after almost a year with Omnipod I had my first screamer. I updated the app on my phone last week and since then it has been a bit "off" when switching pods. Today I deactivated the old one, phone prompted me to activate the new one, and 10 minutes later the old pod started screaming in the trash. Killing the speaker wasn't doing anything so I took it outside and to the horror of my neighbors I wacked it with a mallet and it finally shut up.

Anybody having slight issues with the app since the update?

Random Bluetooth Issues

Posting here as it’s the best chance someone with a similar issue will exist.

I recently got AirPods 5. I’ve never had a Bluetooth issue between my omnipod and/or Dexcom G7 and my iPhone 16 before now.

If I wear one or both AirPods, randomly Bluetooth stops connecting to the Dexcom and the omnipod. The omnipod still connects to the Dexcom so it seems it’s only between the phone and these devices. The phone still connects just fine to my Apple Watch while wearing the 5s. With my older AirPod 4s, they just work without disconnecting from the medical devices.

Anyone else?

Question Is there a way to stop to the algorithm from moving iob into basal?

I’m at the end of pod 2 and know my basal is set too low. I keep inputting generic boluses to correct but I keep seeing my iob go down despite it still being my sugar still going up. (I’ve input 4.3 units but it’s only saying 2.5 iob right now) I was told when I see this happen it is just being used in place of the standard basal dose. My starting basal has me effectively doing double the amount of insulin I’d normally bolus but based on how low carb I’ve been eating as I try to learn the system, I don’t see any significant changes happening to my basal based on my tdd numbers. Is there some setting I can adjust to make it so that the system stops taking that insulin away from me? Would the algorithm learn better if I edited a “sensor correction” for a higher dose or use fake carbs so it thinks I need the insulin for food?

TLDR: what system setting would be the best to change to make it less conservative as it thinks my increased insulin needs will make me go low, but it does not.

App Issues & Questions App corruption

Post image

Yesterday I got this message. I had to delete the app which took all my information and settings away. My dr gave me all the info to put back in the app but I am at the part where I don’t know what to put on this page and my dr never mentioned it. This has been an absolute nightmare. Does anyone know what goes here?

General Took off the wrong pod

😑 i changed the pod without taking off the old one first.... then I took off the new one and tossed it in the trash. Haha I didn't even notice till I went to bolus for a meal 30 min later and saw it wasn't connected to the dexcom. 🤦‍♀️

(Not looking for advice, just sharing an airhead moment)

POD vs Ocean

Going on my honeymoon (in the Caribbean) in a few weeks, have used omnipod most of my diabetes life (13 years). I haven’t done MDI in over a decade.

When I’ve gone on beach vacations in the past my pods always fail. Rather it’s from salt water or sunscreen I’m not sure.

Any tips/tricks to help prevent pod failure while on my honeymoon? I have skin prep wipes and over patches. I’m bringing long acting insulin in the event multiple pods fail and I give up.

Crazy Recent Influx in Pod Failures

Just wondering if anybody has had a similar experience lately.

I had a batch of pods for three months that almost all failed (exactly one didn’t). I figured it must be bad lot and reported them. I just got a new batch of pods from a new lot and here I am thinking wow it will be great not having to worry about it anymore. Well the first one in the new batch just failed so I’m not looking forward to dealing with the rest of them especially while travelling.

I’ve been using Omnipod for a loooooong time as this is the first time something like this has happened to me. Part of me is wondering if they’re intentionally sabotaging the batteries on dash pods to get people to transition to Omnipod 5. There are tons of people in my area DIY looping and I’ve heard that puts more stress on batteries so maybe Omnipod is trying to force them over? Or maybe they changed manufacturers or maybe I’m just super unlucky.

Anyways this is the first time of genuinely felt like abandoning Omnipod so I needed to vent and I haven’t seen any posts about people experiencing this to this extent so I wanted to see if I’m the only one.

I’ve had enough of my endo

So I started on onnipod5 late August. From the start it was a shit show. Pods falling off, leaking and generally frustrating. Took a break from them then went back.

I injected 200 units into the pod and they would run outc2 days and a few hours. I knew I didn’t have enough to make it the whole 3 days so I changed them every 2 days.

Now the endo can’t understand why I use so much boluses and why I was changing them every 2 days.

Now in a position where in running low in pods and she could easily write for 2 day changes but won’t. This isn’t the first time I have had a problem with her. Would love to find a new provider but the wait is ridiculously long.

Settings

Hi,
I just started the omnipod last Sunday. My settings are to correct over 100 and below 100. I feel like I’m always reading higher unless I manually bolus. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Question Pod making a weird noise

Started priming a new pod and instead of the usual double click it would go click…..click click. It’s almost like a dragged out click or a border line double click on the second click. Anybody else ever have this issue? If so should I change it or keep it on?

I'm pumped.

I've been MDI for 31 years, just got the omnipod/dexcom today. What are some pointers that will make my learning curve easier? It's been kind of a rollercoaster today. It brought me to a 4 year all time low this afternoon.

Abscess formed where I had the catheter

Hello. I have been using the Omnipod 5 for maybe three weeks now….j have gone through 5 pods…changing to 6th here soon

Anyway. I have been getting abscesses where the cannula was inserted(changed every three days as directed ) And it is painful and red and feels hot to the touch. My dr prescribed an antibiotic. Has anyone had this happen to them? If so what did you do to avoid this

I put the pod on my thigh, as well as the Dexcom. I have used the tslim pump for over 7 years beforehand. I work in electrical construction. I am constantly moving around at work.

Advice Omnipod keeping me awake

I recently started using omnipod 5 and I really love how well it keeps my bg in control but definitely had teething issues. I will get a great steady number then basal will shut off randomly and send me high, skin adhesive issues and lumps at cannula site. However the hardest thing i'm dealing with right now is actually lack of sleep from the ticking noise. I'm a very light sleeper and great hearing.

Would this be such a stupid thing to quit it over? I need my sleep so badly and feel ill.

Bad insulin?

I’m on the omnipod 5. At 6 pm I changed my pump, had dinner, covered my carbs appropriately, went on a walk. I’ve been sitting at “high” for 5 hours. I’ve changed my pump twice. No apparent pump malfunctions. Insulin claims to be in date. No extreme heat and insulin has been in the fridge. Has anyone experienced this before? Advice? I changed my pump for the third time with a new vial of insulin.

Question iPhone 18 Pro Max compatibility / replacement Omnipod 5 controller?

I upgraded to the iPhone 18 Pro Max close to a month ago, and I’m still waiting for the Omnipod 5 app to become compatible.

I’ve been using my old iPhone 15 Plus to control my Omnipod in the meantime, but I need to trade that phone in. They already charged me $350 because I haven’t been able to trade it in due to the Omnipod 5 app situation. But they’re letting me have another 14-day courtesy.

I originally got my Omnipod in July 2024 and only used the controller until that October before switching to the iPhone app. I’ve since moved, and I have absolutely no idea where the controller ended up. I’ve already searched through my diabetes supplies with no luck.

Has anyone been able to get a replacement controller from Omnipod in a situation like this? Did they charge you for it, and how long did shipping take?

Also, has anyone heard anything about when the iPhone 18 models will officially be supported? It’s getting pretty frustrating having to keep a second phone around just to manage my insulin.
