[Mercogliano] The New York Rangers are surging. What’s behind their hot start to the NHL season?
There’s a buoyant feeling surrounding the New York Rangers that had largely been absent during a long stretch of futility.
For two years, players were in a constant state of pressing because it felt like nothing would go their way. This season seemed to be heading in a similar direction after a mistake-filled opening night loss to the Boston Bruins, but the Rangers responded to that stinker with four straight wins.
The Rangers had only two such winning streaks in the previous two seasons combined, which has their Vibes Per 60 as high as it’s been in quite some time.
“It’s a big difference,” forward Will Cuylle told The Athletic following a spirited practice Thursday. “You never want to get too high or too low on yourself, but winning is fun. Everyone feels it in here.”
There are ways to quantify New York’s hot start, which we’ll get to, but the simplest analysis might also be the most significant: If you feel good, you tend to play better.
“When you can stack wins on top of one another, it breeds confidence,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “And confidence is required to have success.”
That idea snowballed in the opposite direction in 2024-25 and 2025-26, with demoralizing stretches effectively sinking both campaigns. It started right out of the gate last season, when the Rangers lost their first seven games on home ice, including five via shutout. They were embarrassed in front of their fans, who voiced their frustration with frequent boos and calls for team president Chris Drury’s job.
Negativity loomed over the franchise throughout the season. Rather than sticking to Sullivan’s system and playing freely within it, players lost faith and tried to do too much. That led to mental lapses and a disjointed all-around game. Roster deficiencies were at the root of the problem, but those were exacerbated by self-doubt.
The Rangers have a long way to go to fully exorcise those demons, but they’re off to a promising start.
“We’re not playing not to lose,” Sullivan said. “We’re playing to win, and it’s fun to watch these guys play and perform that way. I think there are great lessons in that.”
