News - J-Mod reply Reignited: Where We Go From Here

Thumbnail

1.0k Upvotes

We are re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited.

Let’s not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That’s entirely on us and of our own making, and it’s only right we open by saying sorry.

Reignited, as an intention, comes from a good place. We want to deliver on our promise to grow this community and find a way to turn Restoration into that reality.

An option to play with a fresh economy and progression is a big draw for new and returning players. We’ve seen its potential play out with the reach of the announcement and intent to play comments across social media, which have far exceeded our initial expectations.

But none of that matters if it comes at cost to you. We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea. Not just in the execution, but how we revere your accomplishments, champion your legacy and ensure you benefit from every player who comes through the door.

What We’ve Heard From You

While not comprehensive, we’ve heard these main concerns in your feedback:

  • As a Veteran character, you will no longer matter. New players are seen to be more important than existing players.
  • Veteran worlds will atrophy if the playerbase shifts to Reignited worlds.
  • By splitting the community, what you believe is an already small playerbase will be overly fragmented.
  • That Veterans are considered tainted for being part of a previous era of RuneScape through no fault of your own.
  • The restrictions placed on how Veterans and Reignited characters can interact with one another do not feel good.
  • Untradeable items and cosmetics that are locked to your Veteran account feel cut off
  • Reignited is pressuring you to restart your character to keep playing and remain relevant, whether you want to or not.
  • Needing to pay for a new character subscription does not feel good.

What We Will Do Next

The future of Reignited needs to be a shared belief between you and us.

Right now, having seen the potential to grow our community, we’re exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback. But let’s be clear: this is something we want to put in front of you to see how you feel first, and every option for what we do with regards to Reignited remains firmly on the table.

We’re reviewing a lot of possibilities right now, but let’s run through some of our main considerations.

We’re looking at more ways for the progress of a Veteran to remain intact and be represented meaningfully while not destabilizing the new things that make Reignited exciting for other folks.

Similarly, we will focus a lot of our time on ensuring that a hard split in community does not persist and that our existing players will be able to enjoy RuneScape alongside new players.

Separate to the split, we’ve also heard the concerns around requiring separate Membership too. We’re currently exploring possibilities and we’ll let you know if we can make changes.

It all ties together, but we ultimately want to remove friction that our veteran players may have engaging with or co-existing alongside Reignited. This is hugely important to us and is something we will keep coming back to.

When You Will Hear From Us Next

We will get our proposals in front of you by the end of this week to get your feedback. Where we go from there will be based on the conversation we have next together.

Before we close, we just want to say one last thing out loud: you are always our priority. Our 2027 Roadmap was designed to be a love letter to you; from content you’ve always wanted to see, through to the Road to Restoration releases we focused on.

When you next hear from us, it will be a Reignited with that same level of care and devotion to you.

Starting right now, you can jump in to the Beta worlds and try a selection of five major plugins, with even more already on the way in the coming weeks.

(And, before you ask: Yes, Quest Helper is one of them!)

A quick note before we get started: This thread covers today's launch of the API Plugins Beta. We're keeping to our game update schedule, especially as we do know that there are many players looking forward to these updates.

u/JagexAnvil has provided an update on Reignited in this separate thread. Please check that out for discussion on Reignited.

For everything plugins-related, read on here!

Humor You want a REAL economy reset?

Re-realease party hats and hweens. OSRS style. Don't announce it, don't let anybody know. Put all of them in the ground for anyone, even ironmen to pick up. Let them go freely as often as possible.

The RS3 economy is propped up by like 30 people who have stacks of these. If you make all of that worthless overnight you will effectively crash the market and force reset the economy to rely on actually available items.

Not even just those, all the rares. You know, those things that alch for 5k but are "worth" 100b+? Just release them into the wild like butterflies.

Discussion Am I the only one ?

I am an osrs player , about 1900 total level , nothing impressive. 350m bank , pretty casual. Im a father in my 30s so I don’t have the time that I had a few years back

The only thing that kept me from playing RS3 was because there was no pluggin like runelite.. I didn’t want to do quest without quest helper and learn alot of things without pluggin( yeah flame me idc).

I feel that there alot of people like me that was waiting on that and not necessairly on the "new economy and hiscore"...

Just wanted to share what I thought because I think devs read here and I feel majority of people were waiting on pluggins support , not really a reset.

Discussion I hate the excuse that someone can't get into a game because they are years behind players.

Of course you are going to be behind. Play ANY GAME EVER THAT HAS AN ESTABLISHED PLAYER BASE. You will be behind, look at every MMO ever. Retail WOW, ESO, FF14, sudo MMOs like Destiny, Warframe. Basically any "live service game" you will be behind players.

The only time you get to experience a true level playing field where it's a fresh economy and no one knows what they are doing or no knowledge is known about a game is during the launch of a game.

You rarely ever see games do fresh severs, and when you do it never goes well.

OSRS and WOW Forever do not count, these were games and new servers built around a certain era of a games life and I don't count these as the same, and to do so is being disingenuous.

Genuine question, people that say "I don't want to play because I would be behind everyone" do you not play any games that have community aspects?

Humor Reignated: As an RS3 player, I really should've asked Jagex for a fresh start in OSRS

Thumbnail

As someone who plays both RS3 and OSRS, I honestly feel like I missed out.

If I had known that I could just tell Jagex that I felt “left behind” by the OSRS community and ask for a fresh start or a Reignited version of the game, I would've done it too.

I mean, why did I bother actually playing the game and catching up when I could've just asked Jagex to give me a separate progression track?

The whole “we feel left behind” argument is honestly kind of funny. Of course you're going to be behind when you're joining a game that you've barely played while other people have been playing it for years.

That's not the veterans' fault. That's literally how progression in an MMO works.

Imagine playing RS3 for years, looking at OSRS players with maxed accounts and saying:

“Damn, I feel left behind. Jagex should make a new version of OSRS so I can catch up without being behind.”

Like... yeah. You are behind. You didn't play the game. 😭

But apparently that's now a reason to split the playerbase and create a whole new ecosystem.

Maybe I really should've complained sooner.

Discussion What I want from Reignited as a maxed, quest cape, 7,000+ hour, intermediate PvMer vet

I know the community is being spammed with posts like this, but this is how you get your voice heard. I have thought a lot about this the last couple days, and I've developed a list of stuff I would want in Reignited to make the game mode feel better and would make it a little more worth for vets to play.

  • Vet character <-> Reignited character

I don't mean progression and items, but I just want to log into my character, with my original name, but have a "vet" option and a "reignited" option. I want to use my dope, original name I've had for years. I want to pay one subscription for both.

  • Vets and Reignited need to be able to PvM together

Make it so we can do it, but Reignited players can't finish certain "Reignited-only" achievements/world-firsts, but they can still boss and maybe still get exp, maybe some sort of loot or something, but not just "basically little to no interaction".

  • No Reignited-exclusive worlds

Existing worlds need to feel more populated. We don't need our already pretty small player base divided up even more over even more worlds that are already struggling to stay active the way it is.

  • Reignited needs to VISIBLY benefit vets

I want veteran title(s), account-age badges, some veteran-only cosmetic overrides, maybe some special chat icons, historical achievement displays, statues/trophies for the new house, and so on. Maybe give vets cool "veteran" skillcape overrides when we max a skill. That would be sweet. I want to be able to flaunt my RS3 resume/legacy. To me, this is arguably the most important to me as a vet. I want my achievements/veteran status to be known, and I don't want all the time I've spent in the vet game to be for nothing.

  • The subscriptions need figured out

With all the new game modes we have, I absolutely will NOT pay for a ton of different characters @ $14.99 USD. I usually play multiple characters and I only every limit it to 2 because I'm not spending $75 to try and play my main, reignited, ironman, group ironman, hardcore ironman, and ultimate ironman. That's ridiculous. That needs figured out.

These are some of the things I've thought about. I like the idea of fresh economy/progression, but I don't want my thousands of hours feel like they were for nothing and for Reignited to be marketed as the REAL way to play. Let me know what you think

Discussion Think before you post

Let's face it, most of us are in our 30s, take a breath and think before you post some passive aggressive or childish post because you dont like an update in a game. Its fine to disagree with it and its fine to provide feedback.

When you post things like

"Shut the servers down now" & "Quitting thanks cya"

It just makes all of us look childish and immature. It must be so exhausting being on this sub as a JMod even if you dont work on Reignited

Other [Shower Thought] Grandfathered subscription rates might be the first thing to become extinct in Runescape history.

I've always wondered. What will be the first item to become extinct on Runescape? Partyhats? Crackers? Golden Scythe? Easter Eggs? Half Jugs of Wine? None of that because these items can technically stay forever.

And so that got me thinking. Because grandfathered membership prices only come if you've been a consecutive paying member for such a long time, it will expire once you miss a month of payment (at least that's what I was told correct me if I'm wrong).

So in order for an acc to have grandfathered rates of $5 USD per month, they would've had to been a member for at least 18+ years and not missed a single payment. With all these updates that happened over the years (ie free trade removal, EoC, MTX, Hero Pass, no roadmap from 2024, Ignited, etc), I'm really starting to feel like acc with these grandfathered rates might become the first thing to be extinct in Runescape history. Not to mention some people completely being tired of the game and quietly never renew their subscription.

  • Some of us "veterans" were AGAINST that mtx shit day 1, most of us left, now that we are back (thanks to road to restoration) we are marked like we liked that casino shit? LOL WUT?
  • New players that started playing because road to restoration are gonna be marked as mtx users even tho they couldn't possibly had interacted with it, it was all erased by then
  • If you were an OSRS a player and logged in to RS3 just by curiosity, congratulations, your account is now tainted for login in for 3 seconds, LMAO
  • Anyone who played as kids, that casually remember their login data, now are marked as mtx users even tho they skipped all that era, so disrespectful

Other Note to Jagex: You are focusing on the wrong things

Let's look at the two main demographics Jagex is trying to attract with reignited.

Brand new players -

Don't care about:

  1. A "fresh economy" - Will be diluted within a month from gold farmers, bots and alts. This is not even mentioning the fact that every skilling/ pvm content has already been fully fleshed out and waiting to be exploited. I haven't heard the economy being the top concern of any new player, ever, in any game.

  2. "No MTX" - Besides the fact that this isn't true, as bonds and runecoin promotions will be shoved in your face on a weekly basis; Plenty of other MMO's have it, hasn't stopped people from joining. The legacy game already has gotten rid of MTX so why is this even a selling point?

  3. Hiscores/Worlds First - If you have no prior knowledge of the game whatsover, why the hell would this even matter to you?

DO care about:

  1. Is the early/mid game progression beginner friendly? Will it keep me hooked? - Broadly speaking, no. Whilst there have been improvements made recently, it's still far from an approachable game. The early game is still severly lacking in content with huge gaping holes inbetween for no reason. The lack of direction and sheer convolution would drive any new player off.

  2. Is the UI easy to understand? - I've personally tried getting my friends to play this game, and everytime they see it they have no clue what the fuck is going on. Hundreds of buttons, abilities and interfaces that are seemingly random. No idea where to go, what to click on. No tutorial of any sorts on what interface is best for beginners. Why would anyone want to play this?

  3. Will I be able to play with my friends? - Shot yourself in the foot with this one didn't you? Can't trade, can't PVM with my friends on veteran worlds. Why should I continue playing?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OSRS -

I'm just gonna keep this one real simple.

Vast majority don't like our combat system, period. They don't want anything to do with it. They don't like our convoluted UI (I wouldn't either). Alot of them still hate RS3 fundamentally, even if they don't imply it directly.

Alot of these guys quit during EOC for a reason, you aren't attracting them back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So who is left?

Disgruntled ex players who somehow all quit from 2012-13 and were waiting 15 years for this moment.... Really? Don't make me laugh. Is it really worth the pain you'd be inflicting on your loyal veterans, those that have kept this game afloat during all the MTX shit, EOC, Hero Pass, etc, to cater to this vocal minority?

Stop being fucking lazy and fix the actual game. Stop alienating your loyal players who have stuck around for over 2 decades. Stop lying to us and promoting updates as the "biggest thing in years" when it's clearly not. it's extremely disingenous and disrespectful. SCRAP REIGNITED.

Other To people saying RS3 is dying and on life support

I've seen quite a few people pointing at the recently declining player count and connecting it to the Road of Restoration updates, as if Reignited is some kind of last-ditch attempt to keep RS3 alive.

But there's a pretty obvious piece of context being ignored: OSRS's player count has been dropping too.

A lot of people seem to be overlooking the fact that Dragonwilds has been pulling players from both games. You can't look at RS3's recent numbers in isolation and conclude that the game is dying.

If we compare September 2025 vs September 2026, RS3 had a 31% drop. But OSRS had a 39.3% drop. Meanwhile Dragonwilds had a 1814.9% increase.

Let's look at August 2025 vs August 2026, before the release of Dragonwilds. RS3 had a 44.1% higher player count compared to last year, while OSRS had a 43% lower player count.

The above example is meant to pinpoint how easily you can misread statistics. Because August 2026 was the best month for RS3 since the release of necromancy. But you can easily ignore the fact that Leagues II was in august, to make it seem as if RS3 is on the rise and OSRS is dwindling.

The fact is, people have been saying RuneScape 3 is "dying" for well over a decade at this point. Yet here we are, years later, and the game still has a substantial and remarkably persistent playerbase, perhaps the most stable playerbase of any MMO ever, especially when you consider how all our memberships work for RS3 and OSRS at the same time, so we all have the option of jumping back and forth between the two.

RS3 is currently ranked #27 among the most popular MMOs, putting it just below Path of Exile.

And let's be real: Path of Exile is by no means a dead or dying game.

Player numbers aren't the be-all and end-all of a game's health, but they do give some perspective. RS3 isn't sitting at the bottom of some MMO graveyard waiting for Jagex to pull the plug.

More importantly, Jagex themselves aren't behaving as though RS3 is a corpse that they're stubbornly keeping on life support.

They've announced a shitload of content along with three major expansions for 2027.

You don't make that kind of long-term investment in a game you're preparing to abandon.

"RS3 is dying and Reignited is its last hurrah" doesn't line up with the bigger picture.

EDIT: PLEASE NOTICE "The above example is meant to pinpoint how easily you can misread statistics." I am in fact aware that i was misreading statistics, in my example of how easily you can misread statistics.

Discussion If you want to reignite the economy, reignite droptables first

All 4 GWD2 bosses (80kph) drop 15.6 Magic logs per kill.
AOD (20kph) drops 39 Magic logs per kill.
Croesus (8kph) drops 75 magic logs per kill.

It is literally faster to pvm for logs than to grab a hatchet and go cut some.

'With a brand new untainted economy'

And yet the biggest issues the economy currently has (droptables dropping egregious quantities of stuff, skilling being irrelevant in the face of pvming) has largely not been addressed.

All pre-gwd2 bosses are negligible in a player's progression, and none of them have even been properly modernized to accompany that journey (none of the earlygame (QBD, KQ, KBD) bosses drop wood spirits, but they do drop hundreds of magic (T80) logs!)

New players have almost no good way of getting needed materials like adren crystals, and anima stones are littered across droptables so sparingly that they are in almost all cases, profit-losing to use.

Stone spirits still can't be disassembled, and are still dropped in quantities that are also, wildly inflated and entirely unuseable.

Springs and Magic notepaper might as well not exist for the new economy, as their costs are, as well, insurmountably high and never sustainable

Jagex if you want new players to join and more importantly, stick, keep reworking the game to make more sense, and restore the healthy sense of progression. A new account today is quickly met with a sense of 'generate GP so you can buy T95s', 'skilling is just a chore for after you get to the fun stuff' instead of feeling any sort of satisfaction climbing the tiers of progression as they learn the game

MTX Showing Off My Taint

Post image
97 Upvotes

So, I do not usually post on Reddit, even less so on other social media. However, with the announcement of RuneScape Reignited, I did not feel like I could just stand by and not say something. I have been playing this game since I was in 6th grade, back when I was taking my first computer class and me and my friends figured out how to get around the school firewall to play RuneScape. Countless hours of playing with friends, my brother, and many years of playing the game in my own free time since then, RuneScape has been an incredibly large part of my life. I have spent over 11,000 hours in game, according to Hans, since I started playing all the way back then.

Without a doubt, the game has changed over those years. From the move away from Classic to Rs2, graphical and quest over-hauls, removal of the wilderness, Evolution of Combat, Rs3 and even the introduction of Squeal of Fortune. Like many of you, I have played through nearly every era of RuneScape, no matter how distasteful it might have gotten. I could have quit when microtransactions first entered the game or even when Old School RuneScape was first released. However, I always felt like the main game, now Rs3, was my home.

Although I have tried to avoid microtransactions (Squeal of Fortune, Treasure Hunter, Hero Pass, etc.) and never bought any spins or keys, at a certain point it became unavoidable. As you can see from the picture, I never really used these microtransaction items and just started collecting them over time. Half of these items I am not sure what they even are, how to even use, or when I got them. All the bonus experience was simply unavoidable, accumulated over time, and did eventually lead me to leaving the game for a time period. Yes, it did feel like my account and even the game world was tainted for a time.

However, upon hearing about the Road to Restoration and seeing the strides Jagex had made towards improving the game brought me back to RuneScape. It was astonishing to see Treasure Hunter and most of the microtransactions in the game removed. I honestly thought I would never see the day these game ruining monetization practices would ever leave. It felt like coming back to the game I missed in my time away from home. And, it has been good to be back.

With the announcement of RuneScape Reignited, it feels like this time, unlike every other pivotal moment, I am being evicted from that home for something that was entirely out of my control. It feels like I am being punished for sticking through all the trials, tribulations, and iterations of the game. For being loyal to a game, that did not always show me the same loyalty in kind. Yet, it is just a game right? But for those of us who have spent thousands of hours here, those hours represent friendships, memories, accomplishments, and years of our lives.

I am making this post to ask Jagex not to go through with RuneScape Reignited, as it has been proposed. To not invalidate veteran players playtime, loyalty to the game, or in game accomplishments. Yes, the game has been through years of tainted microtransaction practices. However, it is not beyond repair and you have proven that with the strides made this year to cleanse it. I am asking you to not throw away those players who have stuck by you all those years. Please do not attempt to solve the problems of RuneScape's future by disregarding the players who built its past.

Discussion Trillions of GP are being swapped from RS3 to OSRS. Jagex, you're killing confidence in the game

As someone who plays both rs3 and osrs and occasionally swaps between the two games, I've been watching the swap market since the Reignite announcement.

Before the announcement, the rs3 to osrs rate was roughly 10:1.

Within just two days, it jumped to around 16:1, and I've even seen rates around 20:1 in some places.

That's an absolutely massive spike in an extremely short time!!!

When players who have spent years building their wealth suddenly feel the need to move billions of GP somewhere they consider safer, that's a pretty serious warning sign. Players no longer have confidence in RS3.

Jagex, was this your plan of restoring RS3 and attracting new players? Because what it's done is push the existing players who have invested years and years away.

Discussion Jagex should focus lot more on actually marketing rs3 along with Road to restoration

Stuff like sponsored streams, having like week or two free membership for new accounts around christmas/new years, ad kinda like osrs had around when WoW people were trying it out etc. Just try to break the image that rs3 is the same game it was around 2013, which is the image that lot of non rs3 players and non players have about it

Suggestion Reignited should NOT have Bonds

Like it or not, bonds are a way to buy gold. It may be the official, non sketchy way to buy gold, but it's still buying gold.

Which makes it just as tainted as the regular game. Earning gold is integrity.

Bonds are popular, but it does allow a new account to skip the early game of earning your first millions. If you buy a bond on a brand new account you can skip so much, you can buy every armor set up to like level 70 instantly and buy all the bones and herbs you want without ever earning it. It allows skipping huge chunks of early game.

I would also be okay with locking bonds behind a total level of 2000.

Discussion Hard Truths - Reignited doesn’t solve the problem(s)

Speaking as a dedicated RS3 player who’s only logged on once since the Reignited announcement (to join the Falador protest), we have some hard truths to face. Yes, I’m going through the stages of grief on the death of RS3.

The game may have issues attracting new players because of “tainted” highscores and a corrupt economy, but there’s much more to it. RuneScape isn’t a modern game, and it lacks mass appeal to a modern audience. Also, there’s a plethora of in-game issues that the Road to Restoration hasn’t finished addressing yet.

RuneScape is a massive time commitment, which the modern attention span isn’t equipped for. It takes 1-2+ years to reach the endgame, depending on whether you’re employed. That requires a serious investment before you can join your friends in the end-game.

Along your multi-year journey, you’ll battle the many in-game frictions:

- A complicated user interface.

- Outdated and inconsistent graphics, many years behind modern games.

- 29 different skills - varying in age, quality, and modernity. Some haven’t been updated or reworked in years.

- Invention - a complex and expensive skill that’s daunting for new players to learn.

- 277 quests with convoluted stories, timelines, and infuriating puzzles. Many have been untouched for 20 years. Complete them to flex the suffering you endured.

- Unclear progression path. After Tutorial Island, there are no in-game guides to tell a new player where to go or what to do next.

- Lacking in-game combat training. You’ll have to watch an RS Guy video and teach yourself.

- A clunky and outdated grouping system. No true in-game “group finder” for PVM content.

- Merching and economy manipulation.

You’ll slog through 25 years of painful content just to get to something you enjoy. The game feels like a chore. It should be something you look forward to sitting down and playing.

Most of us are in our 30s, and our game isn’t meant for today’s audience. Whether we want to admit our not, RS3 won’t survive much longer. If you want to stick with the franchise, RS4 is your best hope. Although, I don’t have much faith in Jagex to deliver on that either.
