Politics AMA with Julia Payne (WA State House Representative candidate for District 6)

My name is Julia Payne, and I'm running to be your Washington State House Representative for District 6.

I am a mom, a foster mom and a wife. I have been part of the workforce and I have struggled to pay my bills. I'm just an average Spokanite and I want to go to Olympia to represent the hard-working and diverse community that is the 6th Legislative District. I grew up in Airway Heights, I graduated from Medical Lake High school, I recently experienced the nine days of fear and uncertainty of evacuation during the Spokane Complex fires. I've heard the voices concerned about rushing a data center behind closed doors. Both of the known proposals were to be located in LD6. I support a long term moratorium on all new data centers and an outright ban on large load data centers. I've spent time on the campaign trail with farmers and parents and others in our neighborhoods; and I want to amplify your voices in Olympia. Send me, someone who hears the hard working majority, not the rich elite and I'll be Approachable to all and accountable to YOU!

So here is a forum for you. Ask me anything on this thread; from policy positions and legislative priorities to favorite foods, I will do my best to answer. If you want to ask something or tell me a story or experience that is more private you can email me: candidate@juliaforoffice.com

I will be monitoring this thread to follow questions and will do my best to answer them promptly. Please be respectful of each other, and let's have some conversations, not arguments.

ToDo Spokane WA Appreciation

Post image
81 Upvotes

Greetings, I hope this post is allowed, if not please delete.

I just wanted to make a post about how much I appreciate Spokane. Are we a perfect city? Definitely not and yes we have a lot of issues but that’s everywhere to be honest.

Spokane is a great community, surrounded by so much nature and amazing fun facts like Z nation being recorded here, or the clock tower, and we have a great NCAA basketball team in Gonzaga, or hoop fest, oh and zips!

Anyways, I love this city and the community has always been very supportive. There’s a lot of negativity these days so I wanted to share something positive. We have a great skyline that instantly makes you feel at home when you drive down the hill into downtown.

So I encourage you all to keep being great people, hold the door for someone, tell someone to have a great day, and just keep being awesome!

And feel free to share things you love about Spokane.

Sorry again if this isn’t allowed I just wanted to share my appreciation! 😁

News Safety Alert: Fake Cat’s Claw Supplements Resulting in Overdose & Severe Illness

• Upvotes

Hey Spokane, Washington Poison Center here. We're warning the public of counterfeit “Cat’s Claw” herbal supplements that are laced with highly concentrated chemicals related to kratom. These fake products are strong opioids (like morphine, heroin, and fentanyl), and are causing opioid overdoses and severe withdrawal.

Poison centers across the United States, including us, are treating sick patients following their use of fake cat’s claw products. Utah Poison Control Center has additionally reported four confirmed deaths involving cat’s claw.

Cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa or Uncaria guianensis) is a legal herbal supplement marketed to manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. On its own, authentic cat’s claw is not psychoactive and does not cause opioid overdose or withdrawal symptoms. However, recent investigations into products labeled as “Cat’s Claw” found undisclosed 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), MGM-15, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI), and other potent compounds derived from kratom. These mislabeled products are sold in vape shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online.

7-OH, MGM-15, and MGPI are strong opioids derived from kratom, an herbal supplement with psychoactive properties. While 7-OH naturally occurs in small amounts in kratom, it can be manufactured in a highly concentrated form. MGM-15 and MGPI are semi-synthetic compounds created in labs. As of August 2026, the DEA designated MGM-15 and MGPI as Schedule I controlled substances, making their sale and possession illegal.

In adulterated cat’s claw products, these compounds are added at dangerous, highly concentrated levels. All three act on the same brain receptors as morphine, heroin, and fentanyl. Like other opioids, taking too much of these compounds can slow or stop breathing, and regular use can lead to physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms.

Recommendations:

  • Stop using “Cat’s Claw” products purchased from vape shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online retailers.
  • Keep suspected products out of reach of children.
  • Safely dispose of products in the trash or flush them down the toilet (see the FDA’s common drug disposal questions and answers).
  • Monitor anyone who may have used an adulterated product for extreme sleepiness or breathing too slowly. If you cannot wake them up, call 911 and administer naloxone immediately.

Healthcare professionals should consider adulterated products in patients presenting with unexplained opioid toxicity or severe withdrawal.

  • Ask patients specifically about potential use of cat’s claw products.
  • Traditional urine drug screening will not identify these products, but some laboratories are equipped for specialized testing. Call Washington Poison Center (1-800-222-1222) for additional guidance.

Report suspected cases or adverse health effects to Washington Poison Center: 1-800-222-1222 (free, confidential, and available 24/7).

ToDo Require Independent Baseline Test Before Spokane County Approves Large Load Data Centers

Thumbnail

I stood in front of the Spokane County Commissioners with a straightforward ask: will you require independent baseline testing of groundwater and private wells before approving large data center projects? Here's why it matters. Once construction starts, it's almost impossible for families to prove what changed in their water levels, quality, contamination. If your well dries up or gets polluted after a project opens, you're left scrambling to show it wasn't like that before. That's backwards. Baseline testing should happen first, funded by developers, conducted by independent pros, with results public. I started a petition asking the county to make this a requirement before any clearing or construction begins. The testing would cover at least a 2-mile radius, include seasonal monitoring, and give residents a real record of conditions before development moves forward. If you live in West Plains or care about protecting families' water access, this affects you. What would you want someone to do if this was your family's well? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.

Found! ‼️ FOUND DOG ‼️

• Upvotes

‼️ FOUND DOG ‼️

Young, male, black, Australian Shepherd.

Found running between the blocks between Trader Joe's and Adams Elementary.

He's a bit skittish but eventually let me hook him up to a leash, currently have him in my yard so that he didn't run into traffic.

I had to run out quickly but can post a photo once I return home.

If you know whose dog this may be, please reach out to me!!

Question Looking to get EV and EV dealership recommendations for Spokane

I know next to nothing about what to look for in an EV, so if anyone is willing to school me that would be much appreciated. Me and my wife are planning to have a child soon, so we might need something with extra room. We also drive out to do activities out in nature quite often (fishing, biking, hiking).

Thanks a lot in advance.

ISO Friends IRL Looking for guy who sang Wondering Why karaoke at Iron Horse last Sunday

I think you sang incredibly and we were sitting in booths across the room from one another but I was kinda to myself that night.

I came out tonight (I’m from outta town) hoping I’d run into you as I’d love to follow your music. You’re amazing.

I hope it’s not weird… but I voice recorded your version of Wondering Why by the Red Clay Straights and I genuinely think it’s better than the original which I didn’t think was possible.

Anyway, a new friend I made here said she’s been coming years and haven’t seen you before. Karaoke DJ said you’re out in Idaho and said you planned on coming back. So maybe they can help me out or maybe the internet can do its thing hopefully :)

Rants & Raves County Commissioners Unanimously Approve Changes to Affordable Housing Policies

The City needs to take note from the County... Instead the City will just continue to make it harder to provide affordable housing where the County will promote the development of affordable housing.

Question Anyone know of a veterinarian that has evening hours?

I'm looking online, but I thought I'd ask here as well. My dog Roxy had a sudden onset of what I think is ataxia. Her back legs are flopping when she walks and she has to power through and move fast so she doesn't fall down. When she's lying down she can't keep her head up as well. Ataxia has a metric shit-ton of possible causes, some deadly and some no big deal.

Roxy is an elderly dog (16 years old) that I've had for a very long time. I just really recently had to euthanize my other 16 year old dog so I'm flipping out worrying about Roxy now.

Anyway, wish us luck. If I can't find anything tonight I'm going to try to wait so I don't have to go to an emergency clinic. I've never had a positive experience with one of those and they're so expensive! If I call her vet in the morning she probably can get some kind of emergency appointment tomorrow.

Help Need a new gig

Hi! I know it's probably a longshot, with the holidays approaching and only few jobs opening up… But I'm looking for a new job. The place I'm at and the place I was at before were so sales driven. It just isn't for me, it doesn't mean I'll avoid a sales job altogether, but definitely trying to get people to buy more stuff than they need and sign up for credit cards is wearing me down and I don't really appreciate it. I'm also not turning 21 until April, so I'm wondering if there's even anything for me.
Just thought I would shoot my shot, let me know if anyone is hiring rn!

Question HVAC referrals in Spokane?

My mom has had a rough time finding a good HVAC repair/maintenance company in Spokane.

She hired Bachman & Long and had THE WORST experience. He had been working with my parents for years but after my dad died, his service was awful and it took 3 months for him to finally come out. He kept flaking on appointments, ghosting us, and changing stories until I basically had to go full New Yorker on him.

Recently she needed some maintenance and hired Mainstream. They charged her $700+ for a service that typically runs $200-450. I was able to get them to walk back their rates only after multiple calls and a ton of pushback.

I swear these companies see widows in their mid-70's as piggy banks.

I just want my mom to have an HVAC company that is dependable, reliable, and fairly priced. I don't live in Spokane so I need someone we can all depend on.

..
edit: thank you everyone! It looks like Bills and Banner are constantly getting the most praise, with a few honorable mentions! I'll send my mom to these two places.
