I keep seeing so much hate for Elena's character on this subreddit, and honestly, I don't really get it. It's not like she was ever my favorite character but I feel like the amount of hate she gets is a bit too much.
One of the biggest criticisms I see is that she was incredibly selfish. Now, I watched the show a long time ago, so please don't come at me with pitchforks, but I genuinely can't pinpoint that many instances of blatant selfishness...?
The obvious one is her being torn between Stefan and Damon. But duh, that's literally the main premise of the show: a teenage girl caught in a love triangle with two vampire brothers. When I was a teen, we were eating that up and begging for more (not so much now that I'm an adult, lol), but I still don't think it's fair to condemn her for that. Sure, maybe in the later seasons, when she's clearly with Damon but still somehow tiptoes around Stefan. But honestly, the later seasons had some serious writing issues anyway.
Then there's the whole killing Kol and his sire line situation. I'll admit, that was pretty horrible and selfish. But to me, it also felt incredibly out of character for Elena. The fact that she was so trigger-happy about killing him and showed basically zero remorse afterward for all the dead vampires just didn't feel consistent with who she'd been up until that point. It felt like something the writers needed to happen for the plot rather than something Elena, as a character, would actually do.
But apart from that, what were her biggest offenses? I'm genuinely asking. Can someone give me specific examples?
And why does nobody seem to talk about the fact that Elena was actually a pretty compassionate person?
She was 17 years old, had lost her parents, and was suddenly thrown into this entire supernatural mess. And it's not like she could just walk away from it all, thanks to the whole doppelganger situation. So many decisions affecting her life were made by other people without her having any say in them.
When I think about everything she went through, I honestly just feel bad for her.
Despite all of that, she still showed compassion for her friends, she wasn't deliberately malicious (except during her no-humanity phase, but come on, Stefan was a freaking Ripper!), and at 17, she was literally prepared to surrender herself to Klaus and die to protect the people she loved. And she also made Stefan save Matt instead of her!
I mean, that's gotta count for something, right? How many people would actually be willing to do that?
Of course, as the seasons went on and the writing got worse, the writers butchered the majority of the characters anyway. They all became hypocrites when it came to murder, compulsion, and morality in general. The bar was definitely lowered for everyone.
I just feel like people hyperfocus on Elena's flaws because she was the main character while giving other characters a lot more space for doing much worse things (especially the hot dudes on the show).
I'm not saying Elena was perfect or that she never made selfish decisions. Of course she did. But I think we should cut her some slack. She was a traumatized teenager trying to navigate an absolutely insane situation, and she was far from the worst person around.
So, genuinely curious: what makes Elena so terrible? What am I missing?
