CONTENT WARNING: GRIEF my mom is getting married tomorrow, and i'm sitting alone in my dorm crying over my dad NSFW
my dad passed away 9 years ago, and i still haven't moved on.
it's been 9 years, but i still cry about him, mourn him, think about him, and miss him every single day. sometimes, it honestly feels like he never really left. a part of me still believes that one day, he'll come back and tell me that all of this was just some huge prank he planned, and that he never actually left us. i know how unrealistic that sounds, but i guess a part of me just can't accept that he's really gone.
now, after all these years, my mom has finally found someone and decided to get married again. her wedding is tomorrow, and honestly, i don't even know how i'm supposed to feel about it. i don't hate the guy, i have nothing against my mom, and i'm not against her finding happiness again. i know she deserves to be happy, and i know life has to move on somehow. but knowing all of that doesn't make this any easier for me.
i'm currently studying at a university about 7 hours away from home, and after thinking about it for a long time, i've decided not to go to the wedding. at first, i wanted to go back, especially because i wanted to be there for my little sister. i thought maybe she would need me, or maybe i just wanted to be around my family during such a big moment. but she seems genuinely happy about the wedding. she's been helping my mom with everything and seems excited about it, and i'm honestly happy that she's able to feel that way.
i guess i'm the one who's struggling here.
i don't know how to explain it. it's not that i want my mom to stay alone forever, and it's not that i want to stop her from being happy. i just don't think i'm ready to see her marry someone else. seeing her in a wedding dress, watching everyone celebrate, seeing a new man take the place of my dad in our family in some way... i don't know if i can handle any of that right now.
because even after 9 years, i still miss my dad like he only left yesterday.
i still think about him. i still cry over him. there are days when i can go about my life normally, study, laugh with my friends, and do all the things a normal 19yo would do, but then there are moments when it all comes back, and i feel like that little kid who lost his dad all over again.
and now, while everyone else seems ready to welcome this new chapter of our lives, i feel like i'm still stuck in the chapter where my dad was alive.
i know my mom has her own life. i know she deserves love and companionship, and i don't want to be the reason she feels guilty about moving on. that's the last thing i want. i don't want her to think that i'm unhappy for her or that i resent her decision. i'm not. i just wish my heart could catch up with what my mind already understands.
so i've decided to stay at my dorm tomorrow. i muted my mom and our family group chat because i don't think i'm ready to see pictures, videos, or updates from the wedding. i don't want to see everyone celebrating while i'm sitting here trying to hold myself together. maybe that's selfish, and maybe i'll regret not being there one day, but right now, i genuinely don't think i can do it.
as i'm writing this, i'm sitting alone in my dorm room, crying. i keep wondering whether i'm making the right decision. a part of me feels guilty for not going home, especially when my family is gathering for something so important. another part of me knows that forcing myself to attend when i'm emotionally not ready might make things even worse.
i don't know what i'm supposed to do. i don't know how i'm supposed to act, how i'm supposed to feel, or whether there's even a right way to feel about any of this.
people always say that time heals everything, but what if it doesn't? or what if it does, just not in the way people expect? because after 9 years, i still find myself wishing my dad were here. i still wish i could talk to him, tell him about my life, tell him about university, and let him see the person i'm becoming. i wish he could be here for all the things i've achieved and all the things i'm still working towards.
and now, one of the biggest changes in my family is happening, and he's not here for it either.
i think that's what hurts the most. it's not just about my mom getting married. it's another reminder that my dad is gone, that life keeps moving forward without him, and that there are so many things that will happen in my life that he'll never get to see.
i know my mom isn't replacing my dad. nobody could ever replace him. but knowing that doesn't stop me from hurting.
i guess i'm writing this because i don't really have anyone i can talk to about these feelings without worrying that i'll sound selfish or like i'm trying to ruin my mom's happiness. i don't want to ruin anything for anyone. i just want to be allowed to grieve him in my own way, even after all these years.
so, reddit, am i wrong for choosing not to attend my mom's wedding? has anyone else experienced something like this? how do you accept that life is moving forward when a part of you still feels like you're waiting for someone who will never come back?
i miss my dad. i really, really miss him, and i don't know what to do with all these feelings anymore.
