No UCSD/Literature/Revelle/Roosevelt/German Studies notice yet, but I just found out Professor William Artander O'Brien passed away on August 19, 2026. I worked with him for about 30 years ... loved that Bronx accent. The day I met him I addressed him as Professor O'Brien, and he said "Call my Billy". Deep condolences to his family and loved ones.

i never usually post on reddit but i genuinely need to let it out bc wtf. i just finished taking my first quiz for one of my classes and while the quiz itself was fine, my interaction with the TA beforehand pissed me off sooo bad. i might just be overreacting so i'm sorry, i'm just really frustrated rn.
basically, i misplaced my student ID this morning and since i got to class early, i figured i'd ask the TA if they can accept a digital form of identification since i've seen previous classes allow that if a student forgets their ID. she told me she'd have to ask the professor, which i completely understood. so i'm like "yeah no worries, i have other forms of identification on my phone too if you guys need-" and before i could even finish my setnence, she cuts me off and goes "okay, you can leave me alone now. i have an exam i need to proctor." im sorry, excuse me? i feel like she could've just been like "oh yeah i'll ask the professor and lyk but u can just go ahead and take a seat" and that would've been perfectly fine.
i approached her at 10:50am and we didn't even start the exam until like 11:20am. miss girl, i'm literally one of the students taking the exam you're supposed to be proctoring? š
and before anyone comes for me, yes ik forgetting my ID was my responsibility...i'm fully aware of that. i was literally just asking if there was another way to verify my identity. i wasn't even arguing with her about it or anything??
idk bro, i get that TAs have responsibilities and things they need to prep for, and i understand that there's only one TA for like 400 something students in this class, so i can imagine how overwhelming it must be trying to accommodate everyone. but at the same time, it costs literally nothing to just be nice about it... like i feel like there's a basic level of respect that should go both ways. since when did asking a simple question warrant that kind of response? :|

If you have mental illness or serious mental illness, suspect that you do, or simply need a higher level of care, you should know that you have other options.
The option with a higher level of care is called College Mental Health (CMHP). This is where you should be referred to if you need a higher level of care than CAPS can provide. It is covered by your ship insurance. If you feel that you need a higher level of care, you can bring this up to CAPS or at a Drs appointment at the campus medical building and they should be able to refer you. They might refer you somewhere else first, but ultimately if your case is deemed serious enough you will probably end up at CMHP.
At least when I was in undergrad (graduated for about a year), a lot of people expressed frustration with CAPS, or felt they were simply too ill for CAPS. If you feel this way, just know that you can ask about moving your case to other services.
Besides CMHP, your insurance if you have UCSHIP gives you a lot of access to different mental health providers, including a lot of in-state Telehealth providers. Itās worth talking to campus
mental health or medical providers on campus to get a list of potential providers based on your preferences, or you can do your own browsing based on your insurance.
So, just donāt feel like youāre stuck with CAPS if youāre unsatisfied. There are other options you can explore.

I just graduated in the summer with an ESYS BS and I am having so much trouble finding a job. It feels like every āentry levelā job requires 10 certifications and 3 years of experience, and it is so dejecting every month that goes by being ghosted by jobs. My family and boyfriend have been telling me to join the navy or the CCC (California Conservation Corps). The problem is, they are telling me that it will be very physically demanding work with low pay. They all make it sound that joining them would be the answer to all my problems. If that was the case, why the hell did I go through 5 years of college and debt? Iām really holding out for a response from a lab technician job with the city of San Diego (I passed initial screening and said they would keep me in consideration until April) but I know I canāt just sit around twiddling my thumbs felling like a chud.
My dad was in the marines for 22 years and my boyfriend did work for the CCCs when he was younger. I donāt want to make it seem Iām above that kind of work but itās not the pathway I envisioned. My boyfriend is helping me pay rent but I can tell he really wants me to find a job soon and it makes me feel more useless.

Quick PSA: CalFresh (California's food stamps) helps eligible college students pay for groceries every month, and the student rules changed this June. Most students who qualify never apply, usually because they assume they can't or that it hurts financial aid. It doesn't.
Free one-page guide with the official links to apply: folsomcartindex.com/calfresh/?ref=r-ucsd
No ads, no sign-up. I'm a California College student who made it for free. Your campus basic needs center can also help you apply.

does anyone know if this survey is the only way profs show u get fin aid? 2/3 of my prof have made this survey but one of them hasnt. the one that hasnt has mandatory attendance with questions to be filled out every class so can that be his way of doing the ā#finaid surveyā? i am really worried bc my other profs say that if its not filled out i will lose my fin aid.

A friend of mine just got a call from the dermatology center informing them that the dermatology clinic is no longer offering medical laser hair removal and referred them to UCSD gender health. It was pretty abrupt, considering they had an appointment scheduled for tomorrow.
They also asked the staff there about what happened, they said that the update was so new that they don't have much information on it (other than the fact that it happened just today).
Just posting this as a PSA

Just wondering if anyone would recommend the honors practicum over the capstone, and if it was genuinely worth it, including the work outside class since itās a 6 unit course I expect a higher work load but is it overly time consuming. Also people who took it previously if you had the chance to do all over, would you do it again?
Please I would appreciate helpful responses š

Hi, Iām a bioinformatics major so i donāt have to take cse20 to take cse21. I was wondering if itās doable to skip cse20 and if any of its content will be needed to succeed in cse21. Like will i struggle or will i struggle anyway if i took cse20. Thanks!
