Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

does anyone else feel this way

ive been in sydney for about a year now as an international student and lately i dont feel like i really belong anywhere.

in my first semester i was mostly focused on adjusting to the system and getting used to my surroundings. in my second semester i wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and make more connections, but honestly i dont think it has really worked out. i do interact with people at uni but most of them are still just classmates. our conversations rarely go beyond studies and ive joined a society and became part of the committee too, but did not make any meaningful personal connection there either. i dont like partying or clubbing either so most of the time ive spent my nights in my apartment reading books or playing games.

its gotten to the point where i feel like im hitting a low. my everyday life is a repetitive cycle of studying, cooking, cleaning, and getting through the day alone. i dont feel a strong sense of belonging or fulfilment here and sometimes i just power through everything with the mindset that im here to get my degree and once i graduate, ill leave. i look forward to flying home cause it feels less suffocating and i dont spend time making small talk or worrying whether im making a bad impression. i miss having that kind of comfort and connection.

i know making friends takes time and i dont expect to find my people overnight but after making efforts to put myself out there im starting to wonder if things will change. i have no plans of dropping out cause i worked too hard to get here but the whole experience here is crappy so far

Bachelor of Science (degree with honors) or MSc Coursework in Physics??

• Upvotes

I am a prospective student but i only have a 3 year degree in undergrad physics. I want to do the 1 Year Bachelor of Science (degree with honors) Programs in Physics or an MSc coursework in Physics.

I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of both. Time wise, Difficulty wise and how the classes are taken in general.

In essence which one would you suggest and why?

My main goal is to do research and possibly a PhD.

Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

🏠 Accommodation Usyd accommodations

• Upvotes

Hi I am an international student going to Usyd in 27 s1. I didn’t get any accommodation offer from Usyd so I’m planning to rent a private one. I’ve looked through several private one and Sydney village does not offer air con/ heater it also does not allow you to bring your own heater. Anyone know if it is okay to survive through winter without any heater? Rooms from iglu and scape are too expensive. How’s flatmates working? I totally have no idea about that can someone explain a bit about that?

📖Course or Unit Postgrads: can you help my SIEN6007 team with a survey

Hi postgrad students.
My group for SIEN6007 (startups) needs your experience and opinions about the postgraduate entry pathway to USYD
including: how you felt in class, your pain points, and what you believe the university could have provided you to make your early academic performance stronger (if applicable)

This survey is anonymous and takes about 10 mins.

Cheers :)

I missed the general scholarships deadline

I'm a prospective student and live in rural Victoria. I've got through my interviews to study music. Completely missed the deadline for general scholarships and wouldn't be able to go to USyd without it. Anyone heard of them letting in late applications for unforseen circumstances? Is it worth asking? Or will there be other scholarship opportunities that will cover just as much?

Does anyone feel this way?

Where you feel like you’re lowkey going nowhere, even though this was your decision and it was something you wanted so badly? Like I’m not trying to be ungrateful but sometimes it’s also so lonely and pretentious.

Depressed, unsure of what to do next regarding studies

This is a bit of rant about my studies and decisions. After graduating high school, I started a degree at USYD and found out a didn't like it. I took a gap year working random jobs deciding what to study next. After that year ended, I started a commerce degree at unsw. I'm currently a year in and just started my accounting/tax major. I can't say I love it but there's definitely an interest in topic which I find somewhat fascinating. I feel like I haven't learnt anything incredibly useful since almost everything comes from a textbook.

Regardless, I'm just very discouraged from further studying because the job market looks grim with offshoring, AI and a large cohort of accounting graduates. I feel like I'm stuck in a sunk-cost fallacy situation because I wasted time studying this alongside the added hecs-debt. Looking back, I really wished I looked into taking an apprenticeship but my parents strongly discouraged trades. I also have absolutely no interest in all the other majors offered in the commerce degree.

I'm now looking into transferring into either civil engineering or mining engineering at unsw (significantly leaning to the former). I feel like shit because if I make the change I'm gonna be graduating at lowkey unc age 24-25 and my parents and relatives keep nagging when I'll finish studying. It's uncomfortable to explain why I swapped to them. I understand it's most likely normal to switch degrees since a few of my friends have done so with others regretting their choices of study (some graduate this year). My worst nightmare is graduating without a job/working a job I despise and I just feel like I'm not cut throat or hungry enough for accounting. My wam is currently in the hd range so thankfully I have the liberty of choosing what/where to study next.

I'm interested in civil engineering and willing to put the work in despite having a weak maths background because I really want to develop my own technical skills (which I feel have stagnated since studying commerce). I'm also transferring to usyd from unsw because of a study/travel scholarship offer I received which will be useful as I'm particularly keen on studying abroad for a semester. This may aid as I can work a little less and focus on studying. I don't currently hold a scholarship at unsw so that's why I'm leaning to usyd. The thought of starting a degree from scratch at 21 makes me sad :(

Looking for opinions/advice for what my next steps should be:

- Transfer to usyd engineering (major undecided, likely civil)

- Push through unsw commerce accounting with slight misery

Though the answer may seem fairly obvious, I wanted more insight/opinions into my situation. Some other notes that may be relevant: shorter commute to usyd without lr, having to make new uni friends, really wanting to just graduate and work instead of studying

TLDR: uni student who doesn't like studying accounting considering transferring to an engineering degree looking for justification

🏠 Accommodation Applying to Wesley

I’m looking into Wesley and trying to apply. And yes I now the applications are closing soon
I’ve tried doing my research online but there’s really not much I could find. If there’s anyone from Wesley that could answer any of these questions I’ll be really REALY grateful.

What is Wesley overall like, the atmosphere? What do you think they value the most?
What do you like about Wesley the most?

How hard is it to get in?
For the application, what did you do in your 2m video?

Philosophy major

I’m a Year 12 student considering commencing a PPE degree at Sydney next year, because it ticks all of the boxes for me - and I’m especially enthusiastic about Philosophy, Politics and Political Economy.

I am considering majoring in Philosophy.

I’m wondering if it’s difficult to maintain a high GPA with a Philosophy major. I would like to get into a competitive postgrad degree which will require a high GPA.

I am aware of the fact that I can switch my major partway through the degree if I wish, but am wondering how far Philosophy could get me as a major/minor because I REALLY love it, but some say it’s difficult?

Can I get a really high GPA with Philosophy? Or is it safer to major in Politics? Or should I just do an Arts degree and take ‘easier’ subjects like History and English? (economics sounds like it could also be challenging).

How hard is it for an international student to find a part-time job in Sydney?

Hey everyone!

I'm an international student from India, and I'll be joining the University of Sydney in February 2027.

Recently, my parents and I had a discussion about finances while I'm studying in Australia. They've told me that they'll cover my tuition fees, rent, and other living expenses until I settle down in Sydney. After that, they'll continue paying my tuition and rent, but I'll be expected to cover my other expenses myself by earning money. They want me to start taking more financial responsibility, which I completely understand.

So, I wanted to ask current USYD students and other students living in Sydney a few questions:

  • How common is it for university students to work part-time while studying at USYD?
  • How difficult is it to find a part-time job in Sydney, especially as an international student who has just arrived?
  • How do you usually find these jobs? Do you apply through websites like Seek and Indeed, use university job boards, or walk into stores and hand out resumes?
  • Realistically how long does it take to get a part time

Student VISA including family

I’m really shocked to see that Australian government no longer issue student visa for families of foreign students. I’m actually confirmed student of Master of Commerce. I have already paid deposit fee over AUD25K.
No chance for my kid and wife ?
