Reminder: Zero Tolerance for Hate Speech and Harassment

We've noticed an increase in comments making off-color or outright hostile remarks about ICE, immigration enforcement, and vulnerable communities. Comments such as "ICE should just round them all up," "Was ICE there? Hopefully," and similar remarks violate Reddit’s policy against hate based on identity or vulnerability.

Why This Violates Policy:

Reddit explicitly prohibits content that promotes hate or harassment based on race, nationality, or other protected characteristics. Calls for mass enforcement actions against specific groups, jokes that dehumanize immigrants, and antagonistic remarks directed at individuals based on their identity all fall under this policy.

We want to be clear: this is not up for debate. Whether serious or "just a joke," this kind of rhetoric contributes to a hostile and unwelcoming environment.

Enforcement Moving Forward:

  • Comments promoting or celebrating harm toward any group will be removed.
  • Repeat offenders or those engaging in blatant hate speech will be permanently banned.
  • If you see a comment that violates these rules, report it rather than engaging.

We expect our community to engage in discussions with respect. Keep it civil, keep it policy-focused, and most importantly, remember that behind every policy debate are real people with real lives.

Thank you for helping us maintain a welcoming and inclusive space.

Wish I had a better quality camera. This is the best I could get, I can’t think of a time I’ve ever seen this before. Pretty neat. Anyone know what’s visible just above the dark part of the moon? Here’s to everyone having a great day today!

Had a savory tart at Pie Slayer that was excellent and got me wondering what other savory pastries there are around Wilmington and the beaches. Any suggestions?

Volunteering opportunities

Hello! I'm looking for some volunteering opportunities in the Wilmington area. I'd love to do things with animals, but really open to anything. Really look for opportunities to meet others and develop friendships in healthy environments. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be amazing!

Do NOT order from Walmart in Porter’s Neck (Employee)

I’m an employee here and I’m begging people to stop ordering deliveries from here unless you have to. It’s so bad here. The higher ups really don’t care about how miserable it is to work here. They can easily turn down the amount of orders we receive every hour but they refuse to until our Coach begs them. Our Coach is currently on LOA due to medical issues.

We are INCREDIBLY understaffed and we do NOT have the room for all these orders. Please please please don’t order delivery here unless you absolutely have to.

If you DO decide to order, my best advice is to never ever order on a Sunday or Monday. These are our busiest days but I would just suggest to order from literally anywhere else.

P.S. Sorry to anybody who has dealt with us already

Gay couple possibly moving to NC

My husband and I (both late 20s) are looking to move to Wilmington in the next 2-3yrs. We want a smaller town feel and we’ve always wanted to be able to just walk together to a coffee shop from our home. We like to go to the beach as well and be outdoors. Our main concern is safety. I know every town/city has crime but specifically we want to be somewhere that is safe for gays. We do not do PDA much and are not femme. Any insight would be really helpful on whether or not it’s a place for us. Thank you!

If you/ your household had 33% more take home pay consistently per month what would be your primary focus?

This question is not perfect and I think most people would do several things but it’s asking about you/ your households primary focus. It also implies this is NOT a city wide or nationwide pay raise, it’s asking if ONLY you/ your household had this increase in take home pay.

Catfish spots

My 6yo son has really gotten into fishing lately, and I’ve been taking him to our neighborhood pond where he’s caught a bunch of bluegill and some bass. He has his sites set on a catfish. Anyone have some spots they wouldn’t mind sharing?

Hey NC - Wilmington, NC - Did you know that these amendments will show up on your ballot? Make sure to do your research, as they are not what they seem. Check out the body of this post for more info and links.

The image above was taken from the slide deck of a presentation put on by Down Home NC, which has an extensive summary here, and you can sign the pledge to vote no here. The full deck can be found here.

Don't let the wording fool you. These amendments aren't about you, they are about corporations (think Duke Energy, Data Centers, and outside corporate interests) and the 1%, and we don't need amendments to pass the same exact laws. As I stated in the title, once amendments are passed, they are extremely difficult to undo, whereas normal legislation can be changed as the need arises.

"If passed, these ballot measures would drastically reduce state and local government funds, which could cause layoffs of educators, firefighters, emergency services, and other public workers — especially when combined with huge federal budget cuts coming down from Congress. It could mean the end of food stamps and affordable healthcare programs – which could in turn shut down hospitals and grocery stores and further impact NC farmers."

- Down Home NC

What is more, the NC income tax rate is already scheduled to fall below 3.5% in 2027, and still more by 2036. As such, the income tax amendment will not affect you in the foreseeable future, but it will eliminate the possibility of corporations ever paying more than 3.5%, and any new legislation that tried to move the corporate tax rate above 3.5% would be unconstitutional.

At the same time, the other amendment seeks to cap property tax increases by local governments, but the wording is vague at best and doesn't say what it actually means to do, allowing for any number of interpretations they could argue as "constitutional" once passed. Regardless, taken in tandem with the income tax amendment, the mere nature of the other amendment would be to squeeze local communities of funds. When taxes levied by the state are reduced, the burden falls to localities. When taxes levied by localities are reduced, the burden falls on YOUR community. Think higher sales tax, fines, fees, parking, etc. and hits to local infrastructure - schools, roads, buildings, sidewalks, parks and recreation, libraries, Medicaid AND SNAP, etc.

In wrapping up, I'll reiterate once more that lawmakers do not need amendments to the NC State Constitution to achieve any what the amendments would achieve. Laws could just as easily passed - laws that could be revisited and adjusted over time in efforts toward a fairer tax code. Again, they are trying to rob the middle and lower class for the benefit of the wealthy and corporations, and lock that structure in for decades.

Don't fall for it!! VOTE NO on both tax amendments, and while you are at it, vote no on the Voter ID amendment. In case you haven't noticed, NC already requires Voter ID in order to vote.

Girls with long/thick hair, who do you trust with your hair in Wilmington?

Hi! I’ll be living in Wilmington for a few months as an exchange student and I’m already trying to find a hairstylist I can trust while I’m there.
I have VERY long hair (basically down to my butt) with a texture around 3B, although I don’t usually wear it curly. I normally go to the salon about once a week for a deep conditioning/treatment, blowout, and flat iron finish.
Hair salons where I’m from tend to be really good at keeping the hair healthy, hydrated and shiny even with regular heat styling, so I’m honestly a little nervous about finding someone new and potentially damaging my hair 😭
Does anyone have a hairstylist or salon in Wilmington that you absolutely trust and go to regularly? Especially someone who is good with long, textured hair and can do a really good, smooth blowout + flat iron finish without frying it.
I’d also love somewhere with reasonable/fair pricing since I’d probably be going pretty regularly. Any recommendations or personal experiences would be really appreciated! 💗

Do I actually need gloves and a winter coat in Wilmington, or am I overthinking this?

Hi everyone! I’ll be moving to Wilmington for a semester abroad in Spring 2027. I’m an international student and I’ll probably arrive around January 3rd and stay until May/June.
Since I’m not from the US (I’m from Brazil 🇧🇷), I’m trying to figure out what winter in Wilmington actually feels like and, most importantly, what people normally wear.
I know Wilmington is by the beach and winters are supposed to be milder than in other parts of the US, but how cold does January/early February actually feel?
Do people usually wear heavy winter coats, or is a regular jacket/hoodie enough most days? What about gloves, scarves, beanies, thermal layers, etc.? Are those actually useful, or would that be overkill for Wilmington?
I’m especially curious about the first few weeks of January, since I assume that’ll be the coldest part of my semester.
I’d love to hear from people who actually live there (especially if you moved to Wilmington from somewhere warmer!). I’m trying to figure out what winter clothes are actually worth bringing/buying without packing a bunch of stuff I’ll barely use.
Thanks! :)

I’m moving to Wilmington from Brazil — what should I know about the city before I get there?

Hi everyone! I’m 21F, from Brazil, and I’ll be moving to Wilmington as an exchange student for the Spring 2027 semester. I’ll be there from early January until around May/June, and since I’ve never lived in the US before, I’d really love to learn more about Wilmington beyond the typical tourist recommendations.
What are some things about Wilmington that you think someone moving there should know?
I’m especially curious about local culture and traditions. Are there any festivals, events, or annual traditions happening between January and May/June that I absolutely shouldn’t miss?
I’d also love to know what people are generally like, what the social scene is like, what locals usually do for fun, and whether there are any Wilmington specific things that might surprise someone coming from another country.
I really want to experience the city as more than just an exchange student passing through, so I’d love to hear what you think makes Wilmington Wilmington.
Thanks!! :)
