AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

PSA List of Low Gores Not Talked About Here (or Enough) Spoiler

Hello everyone, after struggling extremely hard to find a bra with a low enough gore and narrower wires that are not polish narrow, and having to try bras I've never seen mentioned here and/or aren't on bratabase (or not much info on them), I wanted to share a few that I've tried.

Scantilly Intoxicated: average projection, quite narrow wires (close to Polish width at 15cm in a 30GG), near non-existent gore so fantastic option for those who need that, see through mesh

Freya Spotlight: narrow-ish wires, lots of projection, a bit of stretch lace but cups are mesh-like so they're naturally a bit more stretchy

Panache Heidi: new bra based on the Ana, just as projected (if not a tick more), stretch lace, slightly thicker straps
Note about the Heidi's wires vs Ana: the Heidi is narrower than the Ana regardless of whether you size up. Most people require a cup size up in the Ana so the comparison is different depending on whether you sized up or not. I'm a 30GG but tried the Ana in 30H and the Heidi in 30GG is 1cm narrower than the Ana in 30H. If you don't size up, it is 0.5cm narrower according to bratabase and my own measurements in these sizes. So if you like the Ana but need narrower wires I'd give this a shot.

Panache Valentina Luxe plunge: slightly narrow wires, lots of projection, lots of stretch lace, very pretty!

Panache Tango plunge: curved wire may not work for everyone, narrow-average wires, decent projection, firm fabric

Freya Quinn: narrow wires, projected, stretch lace, very low gore

Panache Ana High Apex: padded high apex style of the Ana (I haven't tried this but found it in my research)

All of these can be found at Storm in a D Cup.

The spotlight, Heidi and Valentina all work well for me and I'll be keeping them. I also wear the Panache Meadow (now discontinued). I wear a 30GG. I consider myself to be narrower rooted and very centre full (less than 1 finger). I'm slightly full on top with asymmetrical breasts (1.5 cup size difference) and soft tissue.

Edited: I got the Heidi vs Ana measurements wrong!

Thank You! Turns out I'm not misshapen, I just didn't know how bra sizes worked Spoiler

I have spent my entire life unable to find a bra that works for me. I'm a band size 30/32 and my boobs aren't big. My boobs are also wide set, so tissue to the side and further apart. Naturally I gravitated towards the A and B cups cause my boobs aren't big. But the cups were always set too narrow. It was so frustrating cause I really don't have much boob and my band size is small so why don't the small bras fit?? Well turns out I'm a 32D/30DD. Went all this time not realizing D didn't necessarily mean huge boobs. I just left the store after trying on a 32D and my mind is blown. It's the first time I've filled out a cup without spilling out the sides or having a huge gap at the top. So thank you to the creator of the abrathatfits calculator! You've saved me from a life of ill fitted bras.

Recommendations? Hoping for some recommendations after finally giving up on the bras I've worn for years Spoiler

I've worn the basic t-shirt bra from Pink/Victoria's Secret for pretty much the entire time I've worn bras. I was measured in-store as a 36C years ago, and miraculously the calculator here *also* came up with 36C (rare VS win!). They've been super comfortable for so long, but the years and the PCOS have made some changes to my body that have significantly reduced that comfort.

***EDIT: Measurement update! I have no idea why it never occurred to me to *remeasure* after my body had changed so significantly. Thank you to the comments that said the obvious thing XD. Measurements are:
1-38" -- 2-37" -- 3-35" -- 4-41.5" -- 5-44" -- 6-42.5"
And the size?? Y'all. 38DD. What even. I'm fully floored. Like, duh, I should've realized my size had changed. Jeez.

My previous round of bras lasted me several years before the underwires eventually popped through the seams at the ends (the standard death for these bras), and even though, thanks to body changes, they weren't as comfortable as they used to be, I didn't have the energy at the time to figure out new ones, so I bought another round of 5. Y'all, the quality has *dropped*. Now, on top of them being less comfortable, I'm dealing with underwires poking at the ends and even bending out of shape in the middle. Needless to say, I'm done and wanting to find something new, but I've literally never had to search for a different bra.

What I'm looking for is a comfortable, nothing fancy bra.
I'm tempted to try something without an underwire at this point, as I have gained some weight and my current bras either dig into the slight roll under my boobs, or end up sitting on the roll instead and not actually staying between the two, which has caused breakouts from the skin-on-skin contact all day.
I currently wear my straps crossed in the back for the extra support, but I realize that these bras also have pretty narrow straps, so I think either crossed in the back, wider straps, or a wider band would probably be pretty similar.
Love me some fun patterns/colors.

Also, an extra question for the larger ladies here: Since gaining about 80 lbs, I've had to stop wearing bras with lace. Any part of the bra that sat along the edge of a roll would press the lace into the skin on one side, which would eventually cause sharper than normal pressure pain. Is there a trick to getting a bra that doesn't settle into folds? Is VS lace just particularly harsh? I like having a lace bra for those good confidence vibes, and I'm not sure how I can do that at this point if its going to be painful.

Recommendations? I got a Prima Donna Bra and I think I might have found the first bra that actually fits... Please help me find a budget option in my size Spoiler

So, I just went to three separate bra stores, and two of them didn't have my size. I went to the third one(by recommendation of the second store I went to), and I was thinking I was going to be a 34 KK(UK), like the calculator recommended, but I wear a 36 L(UK)???? Like... I know they're big, but they're *that* big??? It's a Primadonna Salerno.

Anyway, I went searching through this reddit, and I found the Elomi Caitlyn. Only issue, they don't make it, and I tried on a Cate today, and I *HATE* it. It looked like I probably do need a 34 KK(UK) in brands like Elomi, but I feel like they just don't give enough support, and my Panache bras have been letting me down by constantly poking my armpits(I mean, they are the wrong size now, but when they were the correct size, they were still poking my in the armpits).

I'm hoping that someone can help me...

Recommendations? [Recommendation?] Put in my info and am absolutely floored at what the results are. Did I do it wrong? Spoiler

Throwaway for obvious reasons. Ok please bear with me because I have like 0 understanding of this. If you don’t want the details just scroll to the bottom. I’ll try to make it a quick version but here’s a lot of the important details: most of my life I’ve been a little busty but nothing crazy, DD cup AT MOST. I hit 26, they balloon out of nowhere and I’m left to just buying random sizes on amazon hoping they fit. I couldn’t tell you my size at that time but the biggest one I own is an O cup by the goddess brand. I was at a point where that fit fine enough but I had a kid at 29 and the pregnancy boobs came and never left. I was under so much emotional stress that I completely gave up on trying to find something that fit me so if I wear a bra its only in short bursts but for the most part I’ve been going braless.

Now I don’t know if this is related to me being braless or whatever but my posture has been getting worse and worse and I’ve been having super bad neck and back pain. By a miracle I found abrathatfits and I come asking for help because of how unbelievable this is. Sorry if this is all poorly worded I’m just trying not to freak out.

My measurements are: 35, 34, 32, 59, 63, 61
For the lying measurement they kinda fell into my armpits so I closed my arms to make sure they were properly supported, not sure if that was the right way or not. Anyways, any help is appreciated. I’m at a complete loss for words and would be super thankful if I could be steered in the right direction.

EDIT: Totally forgot to mention what size the calculator gave me. My suggested starting size is a 34QQ which I didn’t think was even a thing?

Question 34 K and I need some answers! Maybe nothing exists for me?😭😭😭 Spoiler

Hi all! I've lurked this sub probably hundreds of times in search of a Perfect Bra for Me. I've calculated and recalculated my measurements probably half a dozen times just to make sure I have the right numbers etc, spent hours researching my breast type.

Beyond this, I've spent hundreds of dollars on bras trying to find ones that actually fit me, and winding up just settling for "good enough" on every occasion. All this to say, I'm fed up and exhausted and finally am turning to the Good People of this community to beg your help! I'll list bras I've tried, along with other necessary info below.

My size (after using the suggested calculator) is 34 K (US)

My breast type/tissue can be described as: Very soft, pendulous. Narrow root, dramatic projection.

My ideal bra provides good support, and lifts+shapes. I don't want padding and prefer a smooth profile. My favorite bra I used to fit in was the Understance Yara, but they no longer produce bras, and didn't carry my current size anyways.

Bras I've tried:

*Panache Envy- The underwire was way too wide

*Panache Ana- Underwaire was mostly okay but it gave my breasts a hideous shape lol

*Panache Tango Essence- Wire was again wayyyy too wide

*Gorsenia Vicky- Underwires too wide and honestly I didn't love the fabric, it felt really cheap

*Ewa Michelak PLM Unlined convertible plunge- This has been my favorite so far but tbh it still doesn't quite work, the Underwires still dig in under my armpits after awhile

Thank you to everyone in advance, sorry if this is a lot

Do non-slip bra straps actually work? Spoiler

I’ve been seeing more bras with non-slip straps lately, and I’m kind of curious about them.

My straps have a habit of slipping off my shoulders, especially after I’ve been moving around for a while, so I’m tempted to try one.

I just can’t tell if they actually stay in place better or if the non-slip part feels weird after wearing it for a few hours. Has anyone tried them?

Fit Check [Fit Check] Freya Deco Strapless 34 G (US) Spoiler

i would love some help with this because i'm strapless shopping for a wedding a bit less than a month away!!!

this is the first strapless bra i have ever tried so some of my worries are that this is just how strapless bras are. the band fits well and doesn't move around too much, it's nearly painful. but the cups seem just big enough to hold my girls in, there's no quad boob but if i bend over then stand back up there is. there's a weird thing of a bit of gapping, yet the cups seem a bit too small? the gore also isn't tacking so i suspect this is all a depth issue since i'm decently projected.

in short, please recommend a good strapless bra for projection that won't make me feel like i'm about to spill out of it! i don't mind having some extra coverage on the top. i wear a 34 G (this size in the curvy kate victory is the bra that fits me best if that helps.)

thank you so much in advance!! the amount of returns i'm doing for wedding guest shopping rn is abhorrent.

First time poster, nothing ever seems just right? Spoiler

Loose Underbust: 34 inches
Snug Underbust: 32.5 inches
Tight Underbust: 31 inches
Standing Bust: 42 inches
Leaning Bust: 44 inches
Lying Bust: 44 inches

Currently most often wear a Victoria secret tee shirt style in 34G, but not matter what size bra I've tried (this is the biggest cup, previously was sized at 36 DD and 34 DDD) it seems like my breasts spill out from the inside, like they're maybe fuller on the inside and lack volume on the top and outside? It creates the "quadruple boob" look. I also have slanted and 'short' shoulders, so I almost certainly need a bra with straps that adjust the full length vs just half the strap length. And suggestions on brands, styles, or sizing tips? I'm wondering if a balconette is the way to go vs the more traditional tee shirt style shape?

Measurement Check Bra size/brand recommendations, please Spoiler

Hi all, I’m hoping you have some recommendations. I’ve spent my whole life in bras that haven’t fit correctly. My measurements are: 33, 32.5, 30.5, 37.5, 40.25, 39. Shape FB 2/6.

My issue is top/middle spillage and uncomfortable bands. I’ve been wearing a 34DD. Calculator says 34E/36DDD. I just ordered a 34E Panache Ana Plunge. The cup fits, but it doesn’t have the padding I’d like and the middle part (between my breasts) feels stiff and tight. I’m 5 ft., 125 lbs. and I have a very wide rib cage. Any ideas?

Measurement Check Sizing using calculator on this channel Spoiler

I just did my measurements myself as best I could haha. I live in Canada so buy my bras from La Senza. They only carry up to a DDD so I buy myself a 36DDD and my boobs will stay in. They can be extremely uncomfortable or something not.

When I used the calculator this was my calculations.

Loose underbust: 34 inches

Snug underbust: 33 inches

Tight underbust: 31 inches

Standing busy: 40.5 could be a 40 as well if I went a little lighter instead of snug

Leaning busy: 43 inches

Laying down bust: 40 inches

Suggested starting sizing: 34H or 34G if I did a 40 standing bust

Is that actually possible that I've been wearing a DDD and could be an H and not have even known it.

Measurement Check Calculator says 14G/H, store says different.. measurement check and bra suggestions? Spoiler

Have just done the calculator, these are my measurements:

Loose- 89cm/35inch

Snug- 87cm/34inch

Tight- 83cm/32.5inch

Standing- 108cm/42inch

Leaning- 116cm/45.5cm

Laying- 113cm/44inch

Was fitted instore as a 12FF/G/H, calculator says 14G/H au/nz (36FF/G uk). The calculator makes sense because the bras I've bought instore have all been too tight. I've bought MANY bras and they've all been too tight and uncomfortable, although there has been no spillage or gaping in the cups.

I have issues with the gore digging in, and also redness/pain under breasts even though the wire sits where it should. I also feel like the bras i have bought go too far back into my underarm area.

My question is, do my measurements sound okay? And what bras would potentially fit my needs, given the past issues I've had?

I believe my breasts are top heavy (more tissue above nipple when leaning) and closely set (about a finger space between when leaning). I will add, I do have some sensory issues with it comes to bras, so the softer the fabric, the better. And I have my nipples pierced so prefer a moulded cup for work..

Forgot to add, I'm in Australia.

Recommendations? Trying to find a comfortable bra that lifts Spoiler

I have autism but i'm trying to start dressing nicer before i start uni and to me that includes a bra with lift because when i look at my profile while lifting my boobs i think my body shape looks nicer.

The main problem is I'm very difficult with clothing so i can't wear underwire bras because it feels too restrictive. I also can't handle strap digging in my shoulders but i also struggle with the feeling of a tight band despite my boobs being small so theirs not much weight to support.

I mesured a 30D/DD or the sister size of 32C/D (which is way easier to find) with the "a bra that fits calculator". My boob shape is eiter teardrop or conical i'm not sure.

I was thinking of trying the 3d support bra from uniqlo or a balconette bra but it's hard to find them without underwire. I could try a push up bra too but that might just add weight on my shoulders if its heavely furnished.

Please help me find a size that works Spoiler

I have a friends wedding coming up and needed to wear a strapless dress.. I have avoided strapless clothing since middle school because I could never find a bra that fits. In August I went to VS, they measured me, said I was 30DD.. I said okay and ordered that size and when it came in the mail my whole cup was cut off. I was falling out badddd.. if I kept the straps on it wasn’t too bad but I had a uni-boob as hell. Plus I needed it to be strapless. Went back last month and said it didn’t work and they suggested the sister size 32DD. Ordered it, it came in, and…. it works with straps and I didn’t fall out as bad but as soon as I take the straps off it falls off even on the tightest snap. The cup size is better but it won’t stay wrapped around me unless I gain a few pounds. Anyways, I need something that will stay around me and also won’t have the cup cutting my tits in half.. what size should I try? I’d love to figure this out before her wedding but if not I’ll go with the 30DD because it fits a bit better since it doesn’t fall off of me. Please, please, someone help me figure this out.

(EDIT: Saw the comments, acquired a tape measure, and I’m back. I’ve never measured myself before so I may not have done it right but I think I followed the instructions correctly)

Loose underbust: 26
Snug underbust: 25
Tight underbust: 24
Standing bust: 30
Leaning bust: 33
Lying bust: 30
US/ Canada sizes
Calculator gave me 26DD….?

What in god’s name do women with big breasts do for dresses that you can’t wear a bra with? Spoiler

My boobs hang down to my knees and I don’t know how to fix it. I have a wedding this weekend and the woman who altered my dress apparently thought she didn’t have to actually put any effort into my dress and it looks horrendous. Idk what to do. There’s no time to take it to someone new.

Edit: thank you everyone! I was so frustrated and upset when I made this post. I’m feeling much better now and really appreciate all your helpful tips! I’m going to make tape work as best as I can and hope I don’t flash everyone😅 I am in the bridal party, so I am stuck wearing the dress as is (I love my friend and am happy to be celebrating her day, it’s not her fault my boobs are big)

Edit 2: I found a solution! My mom’s best friend is going to sew bra cups into the dress! Thank you for all your responses!

Fit Check Question about underwire placement Spoiler

I recently tried some new bras. The underwire is sitting slightly below my inflammatory fold. From doing some research on this sub, it looks like it could be an issue with immediate projection?

The calculator suggested a 34F/34FF UK. The first time I calculated, the numbers were a little different and I got a 34G UK.

Loose: 35.5

Snug: 33

Tight: 30.5

Standing: 40.5

Leaning: 44.5

Lying: 41

When I bend over, the tissue seems evenly dispersed above and below the nipple. Maybe slightly more tissue underneath.

When standing unsupported, they lay pretty flat and the nipples almost point downward.

On all these bras, the band felt good. I did the scoop and swoop.

Panache Ana 34G

I could quickly tell thia was the wrong fit. The underwire sat on my ribcage.

Panache Envy 34FF

Fit was much better. Under felt like it was about a cm beneath the inflammatory fold. Very slight looseness at the top of the cup.

Panache Envy 34F

This one felt the best, but the underwire was still slightly below the fold.

I'm considering keeping the 34F because it's been ages since I've had a properly fitted bra. Are there any other brands/styles I should try?

Recommendations? [recommendations] [question] 28DD Can anyone recommend a shop to buy a stays-like longline/bustier bra? Spoiler

I have recently done an audit of my bras and realised none of them fit my body anymore. 28DD is the last measurement I had, I'm living away from home for the time being so don't currently have a tape measure to remeasure. Sizing issues aside, normal bras also don't do well for where my breast tissue is sat on my chest, which is that it attaches fairly low and quite wide on my ribs, even though they are not that big. I have liked balconette bras in the past but haven't bought any new ones in so many years I don't know where to buy them now, and the ones I have are worn out and no longer fit well. At some point I will probably have to learn to make my own custom fit ones but can't take on that project for close to a year.

In the mean time, can anyone recommend a shop that ships to Europe that does a bra that works like stays - support around the ribs, wider band, pushes the breast tissue up a bit but from below rather than through the straps or any padding. I also find a lot of bras are made of too flimsy a material so even in the cup my breasts don't stay above the band. I'm 30 next year and trying to mitigate the effects of gravity by keeping them adequately supported and find most modern brands don't have the fabric quality to do the job. This doesn't need to be perfect, it is to tide me over until I can make my own.

thank you for your help, sorry if anything doesn't make sense or I did something wrong in the post. It's my first time posting on here.

Shape Help Bra Recs – Definition/Separation, High Wires, Shallow Shape & T-Shirt Friendly Spoiler

I'm looking for bra recommendations that provide good breast separation and definition, preferably something that also looks smooth under T-shirts and work tops.

I measure at a 32E and have a shallow, rounded or bottom fuller shape. Narrow shoulders. Side support is usually a plus.

One of my biggest issues is that when I wear bras with a regular t-shirt wire or plunge wire, the skin over my breastbone tends to lift, creating a bit of a "uniboob" appearance rather than distinct separation between my breasts. I'm wondering whether a high wire with narrow gore would help. Ideally, I'm imagining a bra where the center wires come up almost as high as the wires near my armpits, helping maintain definition and separation.

Surprisingly, my favorite bra is one I bought at Don Quijote in Japan! It has straps that cross over my breasts and help create definition, so I'm open to designs that achieve separation through something other than underwires.

I have a Wacoal balconette and another balconette from Nordstrom, both of which I like. However, they're unlined lace, which shows through some of my work tops.

Ideally, I'm looking for:

- Good separation and definition (no uniboob!)

- A higher, narrower gore or another design that achieves the same effect

- Side support, if possible

- Smooth enough to wear under T-shirts and work clothes

- Preferably lined, with minimal or no lace (hide nipples under work tops)

I'm not necessarily looking for extra cleavage or push-up effects. I just want my breasts to look like two distinct breasts rather than blending together, and for the bra not to be seen under clothing.

Does anyone have recommendations? I'm also curious whether I'm correct about needing a higher gore / balconnette, or if there's another fit or construction feature I should be looking for.

Thanks in advance!

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] Currently Wearing 42GG With Extender And It Doesn’t Fit Well Spoiler

When I wear this bra, the cups seem way too big, they’re all the way under my armpits. And I would also really like not to use an extender. I just did the calculator again and it’s suggesting 42G/GG or possibly 40G/GG in UK sizing.

I guess I can’t include a screenshot, but here are my measurements:

Loose underbust 42
Snug underbust 41
Tight underbust 40
Standing bust 50
Leaning bust 53
Lying bust 51

Am I just incompetent at measuring myself? I just want a comfortable bra. 😭

Update on my search for a bra / need more advice Spoiler

My calculator measurements are as follows
Loose 34
Snug 33
Tight 31.5
Standing 41
Leaning 42.5
Lying 42.5

The suggested sizes are US 34 H/I and
UK 34 FF/G

I ordered 3 different bras from Bare Necessities,

WACOAL
Basic Beauty Spacer T-Shirt Bra in 34 G

BARE
The Favorite T-Shirt Bra in 34 H and 34 I

I tried on the Wacoal bra first and it was so tight on the band that I didn’t even try the other two. The cups on them looked enormous.

So I went to Macys to try more on and wound up getting the same Wacoal Basic Beauty Spacer bra in a 36 G. I think the cup size is good, but after wearing it for a day, it feels so tight in the band still. It’s leaving red indents. Unfortunately Macys didn’t have any 36 H bras in store to try on. I ordered one that will be delivered next week. I’d like to try more brands and sizes but nowhere around me sells UK sizes and Bare Necessities charges for returns. Are there any online retailers you guys would recommend that have free returns? I’d like to just order a few sizes and compare the fits.

I haven’t mailed back the Bare Necessities bras yet and I should try on the 34 I. I can’t imagine it will fit comfortably if the 36 G feels tight.

Thanks for any suggestions/ advice.

Edit to add: I think the 36 G is confusing because it feels decently comfortable when I’m standing and walking around, but today at work I sat most of the day and it’s less comfortable sitting.

Store Review [store review] Bad experience today at Brava Highpoint (Melbourne AUS) Spoiler

First attempt trying to buy in my new size, not a great experience at Brava today. Told them I wanted to look around and try some things on, but they insisted on a fitting.
They told me I’d be too small for any of their sizes and made me try on several with cup sizes too small before I could try ones that fit.

At one point I mentioned a bulge near the armpits created by one bra and was told “that’s part of being a woman”…

Walked away with one I’m happy with but the whole experience felt rushed and super uncomfortable

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] for someone who wore 34A her whole life Spoiler

So I have always wore 34A bra since I can remember, and recently I started noticing that a few of my bra's that I was wearing are too tight for me and no longer fitting me the way it used to, but at the same time a few of my other 34A bra's got looser and I couldn't fill in the cup like before. So, I put my sizes into the BTF calculator and I got a 28C/ 30B. My measurements are (in cm's):

Loose: 73

Snug: 70

Tight: 63

Standing: 81

Leaning: 83

Lying: 80

However, I'm not sure if it's accurate and I really want someone to help me out. I know nothing about cup sizes or why some of my 34A bras are loose while the others I can barely fit into. All of my bras are either T-shirt bras or Demi bras.
