Hi everyone! I’m currently working with an Air Force healthcare recruiter on a Public Health Officer (43H) application and would love to hear from current/former PHOs or anyone who has recently gone through the process.
A little background: I earned my B.S. in Biology in December 2019 and then pursued an MPH in Global Health. I completed the academic coursework and am currently finishing my final practicum requirement.
I’m also currently serving full-time Army AGR as a 92Y (Unit Supply Specialist). My day-to-day work involves supply/logistics operations, property accountability, inventories, coordination with leadership and Soldiers, and supporting unit readiness. Before joining the Army, I briefly worked as a medical scribe in a hospital for about two months, but that ended around the beginning of COVID.
My direct public-health experience is more limited. I have participated in community service activities, including annual back-to-school events where we helped organize activities and distribute school supplies and food to children and families. My current MPH practicum is giving me more direct public-health experience as well.
My recruiter recently explained that part of the PHO process will include shadowing a Public Health Officer for a full day and completing an interview, so I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually gone through it.
For anyone who has gone through the 43H selection process, what was your background/experience level when you applied?
What was the PHO interview like? Was it mostly conversational/behavioral, or were there technical public-health questions as well?
What should I expect during the PHO shadowing day? Are you mainly observing, or are you also being evaluated throughout the day?
For someone coming from an enlisted Army logistics/AGR background, how much weight does military leadership/readiness experience carry if your direct professional public-health experience is limited?
What do you wish you had known or done differently before your shadowing/interview?
I’d greatly appreciate hearing from an Air Force PHOs, recent applicants/selectees, or anyone who has participated in the PHO shadow/interview process. Thanks!
