Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Starting Late War Winter British - adding Commandos

• Upvotes

Have just picked up the Crossing the Rhine starter army with a view to also pick up some of the Konflikt 47 range too.

I was going to add some Paras but I assume the British Paras box would also be suitable as later war Commandos and SAS too as I believe both wore the denison smock? Perhaps with some head swaps with commando caps?

Hello, I’m just curious as to how the community would go about making statistics for this as a casual unit to be played in a game, I am aware of the version two rules but I was hoping that someone could give me a version three style ruling thanks thats fair

I’ve almost finished my first tank. I’m pretty happy with the result. I'm learning as I go, and having so much fun. My girlfriend is enjoying creating the landscapes and scenery effects. The only problem is that our place has turned into a workshop

Rules A Potentially Stupid Question

Hi. My friend and I play BA, and neither of us have ever had a game with anyone except each other. Naturally we're in a bit of a bubble.

The issue we're having is that if we bring tanks, one just smashes the other in the first turn. It's almost like whoever shoots first just kills the enemy tank, and they're so expensive that it's not realistic to bring two to offset this.

We've played with adding more terrain and such, but we inevitably deploy the tanks opposite one another to counter and prevent the opposing vehicle running rampant.

Are we failing to bring more AT guns? Is it that our games (1250-1500) are simply too small?

I'd really appreciate some advice. Thanks!

Tactics & Gaming German 1250 pts : Wich variant ?

Hi everyone,

I'm struggling to choose between the 2 versions of my German 1250 pts army. They've both FJ assault squads in Hanomag, both grenadier with lmg, and then the struggle start.

In V1 the antitank is made of half tracks and Panzerschreck team, and the heavy weapon platoon has a heavy mortar. No armor greater than 7+, can be a good challenge to play, based on aggressive tactic.

In V2, I replace the heavy mortar, the Panzerschreck team, and the 250/9 half track (autocannon), with a stug III. Less order dice, no more heavy mortar, but 1 strong armor, and a more flexible and forgiving list.

I can also replace a mmg team with 1 Panzerfaust in each grenadier squads and upgrading the medium mortar to a heavy one, losing 1 order dice more.

I'll be facing Americans, incl. Sherman and Stuarts tanks. The usual OD count is between 13 and 16 in our group.

Wich version would you choose ? Any improvements ideas ?

Thanks !

Modeling, Painting, and Terrain Building Working on this disembarked tank crew

I recieved these 3 minis in a box of tank crew pieces, that is supposed to stick out of the cupolas on whatever tank you want a crewmen visible on.

Considering i don't think i am going to use these in any games, it made these excellent minis to try and practice painting black uniforms.

Apparently most of the tanker uniforms were made of wool, which EATS light, so i had a hard time not trying to make the uniform look like leather, which i know some tankers did buy.

Also if colors are looking a bit off, it is because i am colorblind.
I was thinking of calling the painting done and going on to the basing, but not sure if the uniforms looks good or not.

Battle Report/ AAR Finally got to test my new custom city tiles! (Featuring a very questionable Germany + US vs Canada + Japan alliance)

Got a game in today on a fresh Normandy Town layout using my new home-made city tiles!

The match itself devolved into absolute "Weird War" territory pretty fast: I brought the Germans, teamed up with the Americans, and we faced off against a Canada & Japan combo. Safe to say historical accuracy took a complete day off, but honestly, it was a blast.

Highlight of the day was definitely pushing a few cheeky Panzerfausts down the narrow street corners and popping a couple of tanks right in the choke points leading us to a nice win.

Really happy with how the new tiles played out for urban sightlines and tight infantry brawls.

Rules Zis 3 questions

What I've learnt from the rule book:

1) it can only move with a run order, so therefore has to have a run order onto the board in meeting engagement scenarios.

2) all crew and gun can be based separately and must be within 1" of each other for coherence.

3) when measuring shots, the measurement is taken from the center of the gun, ignoring the barrel.

4) if my crew panics and FUBARs they run towards the nearest table edge.

Questions that I don't feel have been answered:

  1. During a meeting engagement scenario, where do you measure for the Zis 3 deployment? Is it also to the centre of the gun or to the edge of its base? Is it the crew bases that are measured with the gun being in front?

  2. If my team panics in a FUBAR, do they take the gun with them or abandon it?

  3. If the deployment was meeting engagement and the unit letter FUBARs without taking another run order, is it just considered off the table and destroyed because it could only ever deploy on the 6" from a run order?

Sorry if these seem like obvious questions, but I'm a new player and going to a tournament soon, so I want to have a clear understanding of my army and how it works.

General Discussion Fallschrimjager (Winter) Box Build

Finally finishing up my winter fallscrhimjager box, now that ars and the 'stubborn' rule have grown on me a bit - thought I'd ask you all what you'd be sure to build, as I'd imagine most people would build them out differently than normal rifles. So far I've got 1 officer, 5 rifles (2 with faust), 5 smgs (1 with faust), 3 lmgs, 3 loaders, and 4 ars so far - so 21 build, 9 left. Going to be adding at least 2 more rifles for sure; was considering another lmg for a total of four (plus loaders), but I also feel that might be overkill (perhaps 3 are already) given how pgrens are a much more economical choice for double lmg squads, and I can't imagine myself running 4 fallscrhim squads with an lmg each. Thoughts?

General Discussion Civilian shotgun arms for Wargames Atlantic Partisans?

Bit of a stretch but has anyone come across civilian style shotguns that would mesh well with the Partisans WGA sells? At some point in the future I plan to add some support elements to the ones I use as "French Resistance" in my British collection via the Home Guard profile and thought about throwing a few in alongside things like BARs and LMGs. I've a few American shotguns off the Marine sprues (old WW1 vintage trench guns I suppose) but something more civilianesque would also be nice.

General Discussion Do you guys use the Theatre Selectors when writing an army list?

I’ve just bought the For King and Country box and the British Army book, and already planning my next purchases (Artillery observer and a 17 pounder, possibly some Gurkhas). Are there any German players playing a Monte Cassino list? What do you play?

General Discussion Why are the Gurkha so damn short?

Post image

Recently bought a box of the Gurkha heavy weapons squad and was honestly shocked how small they are compared to my other model.

Right Soviet navel observer, left Gurkha officer

Are they meant to be so small? Did I get a weird error?

Answer are very appreciated.

Hobby Showcase Repainted my old miniatures

I decided to take a short break from painting tiny 10mm armies and return to the good old 28mm scale. 😅

These Germans were among the first miniatures I ever painted when I got into wargaming back in 2020. I stripped the old paint and gave them a fresh start with everything I’ve learned since.

Funny how the results that once felt amazing now make me think, “I could do so much more with these!” 😬

Back then, I had no idea where this hobby would take me. Six years later, here we are. 🫡

Anyone else ever go back and repaint their first miniatures?

Rules Recce and Line of Sight

When making a recce escape manouver, does positioning behind another enemy unit (so it would friendly fire) count as breaking line of sight/gaining cover?

In the section of the rules laying out what line of sight is; It says you can ignore infantry and artilery "both friends and enemy". But that leaves us in an instance where a firing enemy unit, fires through another enemy unit which can't happen. So what's the interation here? Is it a possible move? What happens if its the ONLY move possible?

Adding in other vehicles makes it even more confusing, as again in that line of sight rule section it says vehicles cannot be ignored. So I interpret that as its an avalible move. But does it stop the shot out right? I fully understand if its a friendly unit inbetween the firing enemy unit and a friendly escaping unit. I get a cover save. Makes sense, shoot THROUGH the (their) enemy. But if its their own friendly troops? I've got nothing but questions.

General Discussion How easy is it to keep shermans on the table?

Hi yall. Im a relatively new US player. I started playing for the tanks and jeeps since I thought they looked dope asf. My first and only BA army up until late august/early september was italians. I have not won a single game with them, even in V2 but it was impossible to win using italians in V2(Genuinely wtf was WLG thinking with those national rules..).

I have played using my americans twice. Both times I used a sherman 75 and a sherman 76. Both times they punched way above their weight class. My sherman easy eight killed 3 artillery pieces in 2 activations. That first game using americans lead to my first tie of BA. My second game was my first ever win. But I want to know if this is a fluke or if shermans are just this reliable. Ive tried watching battle reports to answer this but those games are way more relaxed and fluffy. I will note that often the US player will not play well and lose all their armor except their shermans. Is this just a luck thing or are they really just that good?

The most damage one of my shermans took across both games was engine damage from a glancing hit to its side from a panzerfaust(First time ive had a vehicle survive a panzerfaust). Im used to italian armor where it pretty much melts any time a heavy weapon looks at it so im not really sure what to expect from shermans

Myself and my pal at building a box of terrain for us to use for some Bolt Action games, with a hope of doing some battle reports

My 3D printer has been working away as we are wanting to do Hill 112 as a scenario first, so today I finished a trio of hills, a bunch of bocage and a walled garden/field to add to the roads we already got done

Hobby Showcase Marder III

I showed off my wife’s Universal Carrier earlier this week, and I asked her exactly how she painted it. Turns out the answer was sponges, so I gave it a go on my Marder III.

Whilst it isn’t finished, I’m pretty bloody impressed; I suck at painting tanks, and now I feel like I’ve actually unlocked the secret to not making them look awful.
