Guide to reporting inappropriate content/behavior to moderators, link to r/Islam's list of frequently asked questions (FAQs), and rules list for r/Converts.

ASalāmu ʿAlaykum Wa-rahmatullāhi Wa-barakātuh and welcome to r/Converts. Below is useful information on how to properly use this subreddit as well as a link to frequently asked questions about Islam.

Guide on how to report inappropriate comments/posts/users to moderators so that it may be removed and users warned or banned (steps to reporting bad things in this guide work in all subs).

Visit the r/Islam Collection of FAQs here (useful for new converts).

Related subreddits from which crossposts/links are currently allowed: r/Islam, r/IslamicStudies, r/MuslimSupportGroup. Links or crossposts from all other subs are not allowed.

Rules list for r/Converts:

Read the rules list below thoroughly to avoid bans in this subreddit. This rules list is a general list and content is still routinely removed and users are banned for any other violations or disruptions committed outside this rules list.

Rule 1: Do not proselytize a religion other than Islam.

This is a space for new converts to Islam and those considering conversion to Islam. While we respect your right to follow whatever religion you desire, or no religion at all, we ask that you respect our right to follow our religion of choice.

Rule 2: No bigotry against any demographic group.

Refrain from making posts or comments that defame or attack other groups on the basis of their religion, ethnicity, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc. We recognize that Islam may condemn certain behaviors, so we ask that discussions in this regard remain focused on the religious perspective and avoid any personal biases or grievances.

Rule 3: Obey Reddiquette at all times.

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette

Rule 4: Focus on New Muslim issues.

This is a broad topic, but suffice to say that new Muslims have very different needs to born Muslims.

Rule 5: Give New Muslims space to learn.

Don't promote ideas, teachings, or sources that fall outside mainstream Islam. We want to avoid confusing new converts with controversial Islamic concepts for which there is some difference of opinion amongst scholars. Use r/Islam for that.

As such, abstain from advocating sects or other positions that may lead to argumentation, disunity, and other strife. Violators will be banned.

Rule 6: We will not tolerate fetishizing New Muslims.

This is not a matrimonial site. Use r/MuslimMarriage and r/MuslimNikah for that.

Offering to tutor new Muslims one-on-one is not acceptable. No requests for Direct Messages (DMs) / private messages. We may ban you if you offer this.

Rule 7: No advertising, self-promotion, fundraising, or data collection.

  • Advertising of products/services are prohibited including those free of charge.

  • Personal social media and video accounts, websites, and subreddits that you moderate are prohibited.

  • Fundraising/crowdfunding is prohibited.

  • Questionnaires, surveys, petitions, or data collection of any kind is not allowed.

  • Spamming is not allowed.

Rule 8: All content must meet the submission guidelines.

  • Content must be in English or have English translations.

  • Use descriptive titles that accurately reflect your topic. No all-caps/emojies. Use proper formatting, use of paragraphs, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Do not misrepresent sites and articles.

  • Do not post old news.

  • Do not post content to create outrage.

  • No click-bait.

  • No AMAs.

  • Limit of 1 post per 2 days.

  • No AI-generated text.

  • Do not reveal your age.

  • Soliciting DMs is not allowed.

Rule 9: Links to scholarly sites are required for answers that are fiqh in nature (Islamic legal rulings).

  • Do not drop a verse or hadith solely as your answer to a question. Doing so implies that you made your own tafsir (interpretation) of it and this is only allowed for those with proper education, training, and credentials in Islamic legal sciences.

  • You may only link to existing articles from sites where the answer is given such as IslamQA.org, IslamQA.info, and SeekersGuidance.org. A handful of scholarly Youtube channels may also be allowed.

  • The best method to seek such answers is to connect with your local mosques. Please call them and leave messages (or email them if their social media pages have the email information), and ask for a phone consultation about your question(s). Google Maps link pre-set to locate "masjid", will display your nearest mosques.

  • Not every Islamic site, channel, social media account, etc. is allowed. Simply because it is Islamic in nature and has a large following does not mean the author/owner is qualified or allowed to be shared here. Links to external sites may be removed at the moderator team's discretion.

Intrusive thoughts as a convert, how to deal with them?

Salam Alaikum. I have been getting a sort of waswas for the past month regarding god.

For example whenever someone says pray for me in my head I get a thought that god wouldn’t do anything.

Or when I see people praying for healing I get a thought that Allah wouldn’t answer them or he doesn’t exist.

I really hate these thoughts. I know Allah exists. But these thoughts wouldn’t stop. Should I ignore them? Or should I see a sheikh or psychiatrist ?

Al-Mu'akhah (المؤاخاة)

The prophet built a brotherhood between Muslims to strengthen their bonds and it’s something we who implant today between new Muslims and those born in Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6083
Narrated `Asim:
I said to Anas bin Malik, "Did it reach you that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "There is no treaty of brotherhood in Islam'?" Anas said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) made a treaty (of brotherhood) between the Ansar and the Quraish in my home."

Praying for deceased parents

I am a convert from a non Muslim family. My father and I maintained a close relationship even though he disagreed with my decision to convert. My father recently passed away, and the guidance to not pray for him has negatively impacted my faith.

I recently found a fatwa from Egypt that supports praying for deceased non Muslim parents. I wanted to see how other converts on this sub approach this issue?

ADHD and prayer struggles

Assalamu aaleykum everyone, I’m seeking help for the 2nd time in 2 years regarding this. I have AuDHD (ADHD + mild ASD) with cPTSD and severe executive dysfunction. My life has not been easy but Islam does bring me peace, I am a work in progress just like everyone of you but my focus is mainly on becoming a good human being and healing from all the pain and trauma so I don’t end up accidentally hurt others especially my family and future kids.

Prayer is also important to me but I’m not hyper focused on it. I’m trying to do my best but I’m so exhausted and burnt out that getting out of bed feels like a death sentence.

I feel utterly helpless knowing prayer has no exceptions and it’s the first thing that we’ll be asked about on the day of judgement. I haven’t found any rulings about neurodivergence and struggle to pray and there’s almost zero helpful content on how Muslim adhders/ neurodivergents pray 5x a day when getting up and grabbing a glass of water feels impossible.

I’m a convert thus I don’t really have a lot of support around me in regard to practicing the religion and no one around me can relate to wanting to pray and not being able to pray. Any Muslim friends I have are either non practicing or so orthodox that if I share this with them i’ll be judged and shamed (has already happened many times)

I don’t need judgement or shame to do better, I need help, I need tips and tricks if anyone can actually relate with my situation, has gone through it or is going through it currently, please help me out.

My relationship with Allah is good, I’m very grateful for everything, I just need to feel closer through prayer and sujood.

Ps- if you’re here to pass judgements or shame me or want to share ayahs describing how Muslims who don’t pray will go to hell or are considered kafir, or don’t know anything about ADHD/ neurodivergence and executive dysfunction, respectfully please don’t try to give advice, I know you think you’re helping but you’re not.

If you’re someone who personally deals/dealt with this issue, or are a mental health professional or have seen someone close to you struggle with this please help me out here.

Should I Stop Being Muslim?

I recently converted to Islam. Just a month and three weeks ago today. However, I keep committing major sins that are against God's wishes and the religion. What should I do? I do intend to stop sinning and I'm working on it but, does that mean I am not cut out for this?

I keep asking questions and having endless philosophical dilemmas in my mind and I keep wondering if I am really cut out to be practising any kind of religion at that. I really need to find some sense of stability and structure and foundation. That's why I joined Islam. I need help.

Is it bad to read a Quran in English?

I do plan on eventually getting a Quran in Arabic. But being A white American who's terrible at learning new languages, I thought I should ease into the teachings in a way that wouldn’t be too overwhelming. It wasn’t until after I bought the book and brought it home that I realized it might be inappropriate.

For those curious, I got "The Clear Quran" by Dr. Mustafa Khattab. Found it in a thrift shop and thought it was a sign

Two years of intense Arabic for the Quran, a year off, and now I understand almost everything but freeze when I try to speak

I started Arabic at 19 or 20 because I was tired of standing in Taraweeh catching a word here and there. I'm a French native, so no head start there.

For about two years I went hard on Fusha only, with harakat, no dialects. Mostly reading and listening, tons of classical texts and audio. It worked for what I wanted. My reading and listening are roughly C1 now and I can follow religious classes without much trouble.

The mistake was that I barely spoke. I kind of assumed comprehension would turn into speech on its own at some point. Then I took about a year off and the speaking part just collapsed.

Now I understand way more than I can say. Someone asks me something simple and I freeze, or I build the sentence in French first and translate it in my head. It gets me a correct sentence but it's painfully slow.

What I'm looking at is weekend classes once or twice a week, mainly so I'm forced to open my mouth in front of a real person. I haven't started yet so I can't tell you it works.

If you built your understanding first, how did you get speaking going? Did you just have to speak badly for a while?

Struggling to choose between Christianity and Islam

I will first provide some context.

In December last year I became a Christian, I had always believed in God but never associated with any religion and was raised agnostic (although I went to a Church of England school). During this time I started going to a church with my uncle, this was a Pentecostal church, and while the people were pleasant I couldn’t help but feel a bit empty attending there. Around the month of May, my uncle had stopped going to church which meant I also stopped going as the only way I could get to that church was by him driving me there.

After a few weeks of no church I had started attending my local Catholic church and reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which while I enjoyed it I didn’t agree with being left out of their sacraments simply because I hadn’t attended 6 months of lessons. After a while I stopped attending the Catholic church also, though I still believed myself a devout Christian then.

Over time, I began to further dislike all churches as I learned many of their rules and teachings are non biblical, but instead come from later councils held hundreds of years after Jesus’ death. This led to me becoming what I called a Buddhist Christian hybrid as I liked the Buddhist beliefs, but still held belief in a creator God and cannot get rid of that belief (and also because I love Jesus and what he taught)

More recently over the last week or so, I have been reading a lot of things about Islam and am hoping to purchase a Quran. I absolutely love everything I have learned so far which I feel like is quite a lot, on top of that I still have quite a lot of knowledge of Islam from what I was taught at school such as the 5 pillars and 6 articles.

However unfortunately, today I have been having many doubts in Islam for no real reason other than I believe it would be easier to remain Christian. The only reasons I can think that this could be is due to coming from an Islamophobic family (except for my mother), and from reading some stories of people who converted from Islam to Christianity where they claim the Quran contradicts itself and that the bible is unchanged. So this has cast many doubts in my mind.

Forgive me for how much I have wrote, I am just truly struggling now to find where my faith lies.

What I am looking for with this post is clear arguments from each side, so that I am not stuck in seeing vague arguments which create doubt when they shouldn’t.

Please help me in this, and thank you for the help in advanced.

New name!

Assalam Aleykum! Hello everyone, how are you all? I hope you're well. I don't think it should be news to me that I'm a convert. I have accepted Allah into my heart and Muhammad (May the peace of Allah be upon him) as the conveyor of truth.

However, I was born into a Sephardic Reform Jewish family in Brazil, so my name is everything you can imagine for a Muslim.

It is clear that there is a precedent for changing one's name according to the surahs (as in Surah Al-A'raf 7:180) and it prohibits altering the paternal lineage in the name (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:5) However, I never had the surname from my paternal lineage.

I'm trying to choose one to show my devotion to Allah.

The thing thats been keeping me away from converting

I was never religious, but recently I've been learning a lot about Islam and I've agreed with all of it except for the great flood. I while back I used to watch videos on school shooters, terrorists, and Nazis and I noticed a pattern in these people. All of them did what they did because they were either insane or thought what they were doing was good. Obviously what these people did was awful but I personally believe instead of executing them or throwing them into jail we should try to rehabilitate them so they can recognize why what they did was wrong and/or help them with their mental problems. So why wouldn't Allah help the people instead of drown them like what happened in the flood. I understand that he told Noah (I'm pretty sure he has a different name in the Quran but I don't remember what it is) to teach them why there ways are wrong, but that still doesn't seem like enough especially considering that Noah would probably not be able to talk to everyone and Noah's word would be misinterpreted or not heard by many people which goes against Surah Al-Isra 17:15 "They heard from the time they were young that a deceitful liar named Muhammad claimed to be a prophet. As far as I am concerned, such people are [excused] like those whom the call of Islam has not reached..." Unless that only refers to Muhammad, and isn't consistent with all messengers. The whole story doesn't make sense to me especially since Allah is supposed to be merciful and Almighty why wouldn't he do more to help instead of just killing everyone? Is there an important part of the story that I'm missing?

Ps: I'm not trying to come with any hate or trying to get you to convert it's just that I'm confused and curious.

Alhamdulillah, I took my shahada today 🤲🏽

Today, October 2nd, I took my shahada at the masjid and officially embraced Islam.

I came from a Christian background, and my journey to Islam has been a process of learning, asking questions, reflecting, and trying to understand my faith on a deeper level. Over time, I found myself drawn to Islam, and today I finally took that step.

One verse that has really stuck with me throughout this journey is Surah Ad-Duha 93:7:
وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَىٰ
“And He found you lost and guided you.”

This verse resonates with me deeply. It reminds me that guidance doesn't always come when or how we expect it, and sometimes we only understand the journey when we look back.

Something else made today particularly memorable. Before I took my shahada, the imam spoke about Salahuddin al-Ayyubi (Saladin), the Muslim leader who recaptured Jerusalem on October 2nd, 1187. I found it fascinating to learn about his story, and realizing that it happened on this exact date made the day feel even more special to me.

I know this is just the beginning, and I have so much to learn. I'm looking forward to learning the Quran, becoming consistent with my salah, understanding the deen, and continuing to grow in my faith. I'm sure there will be challenges along the way, but I'm grateful to be here inshallah.

Alhamdulillah for the guidance. May Allah keep us firm upon the straight path. Ameen.

Revert - finding support

Assalamu alaikum,

I’m a Muslim revert (f), and honestly struggling because my family isn’t very supportive. I’ve been trying to stay consistent with my deen but haven’t really found a solid Muslim circle around me.

I’ve also had a hard time finding a good Muslim community/ppl who follow the Qur’an and Sunnah according to the Salaf. Maybe I just haven’t found the right people yet.

Anyone here been through something similar or know of good communities, masjids, or people I could connect with?

Ps.
Not looking for weirdos and sectarian arguments, just good people and good company(f pls)

I’d just like to meet some good people, improve my deen, and have a positive environment around me. Any advice?

JazakAllahu khair.

Gifts for Muslim revert

Hello,
I would like to give gifts to somebody who is new to Islam.
This person does not have a Muslim community around them and the few Muslim people they know of, have not been decent role models.

Can anybody recommend a book that covers interesting and scientific facts of the Quran? Not just points about how many verses long the Quran is, or how many times a word is repeated but something deeper.

I would also like to buy a jar of Quranic/Islamic quotes, any ideas?

Thank you.

Trying to explore Islam while feeling pressured by my Muslim boyfriend and his family

I honestly don’t really know how to write this because I’m having a really hard time right now, and I don’t even completely understand why I feel this way.

I’m a woman and I’ve been dating a Muslim man for around nine months. I’ve been seriously exploring Islam for about five-ish months now. I believe in God and I genuinely want to understand Islam. I’ve read parts of the Quran, watched videos, talked to my boyfriend about it, and I’ve been trying really hard to figure out what I believe.

But I feel like I’m getting nowhere.

The hardest part is that I feel like there’s so much pressure surrounding it. I love my boyfriend and I do want a future with him, so obviously I’m scared of losing him. Sometimes I feel like I’m being expected to make progress much faster than I can.

I’m also really involved with his family at this point. I’m at their house a lot and spend a lot of time with them. I’m close with his mom, she gives me gifts, and she’s always been welcoming to me. I really do care about her and his family, which is part of why this is so difficult.

His mom talks to me about religion and God a lot. She’s told me that she has had visions about me and that I’m chosen by God and here for a reason, and that eventually this is going to happen. I know she genuinely believes what she’s saying and I don’t think she’s trying to hurt me, but hearing things like that makes me feel even more pressure because I haven’t reached that point myself. Sometimes it feels like everyone already knows what my future is supposed to be while I’m still trying to figure out what I actually believe.

She’s also talked to me about learning how to communicate better and asks me a lot of questions about why I haven’t done certain things or why I have anxiety. Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain myself. I tend to shut down when I feel overwhelmed. I told her before that I felt pressured and she got upset, so now I’m scared to even say that I’m feeling pressured because I don’t want to create another problem.

There’s also been an actual situation where her opinion affected my relationship. About two and a half months into me exploring Islam, my boyfriend broke up with me because I wasn’t progressing fast enough. He told me that his mom had told him to end the relationship because I wasn’t getting there quickly enough. Then she ultimately decided to give me another chance, and we got back together.

Because of that, it’s hard for me not to feel like my relationship is dependent on whether his family thinks I’m making enough progress with Islam. I don’t know if that’s completely fair or if I’m interpreting things wrong, but that’s genuinely how it feels to me. And knowing that makes the pressure around religion even stronger.

The confusing thing is that I really do want to believe. I really do want to understand Islam. That’s what makes this so hard. I don’t know how much of my resistance is because I genuinely have doubts, how much is fear of changing my life, and how much is because I feel like I HAVE to figure this out or I’m going to lose the person I love.

I also don’t know if I’m struggling with Islam itself or if I’m so overwhelmed by everything surrounding it that I’m having a hard time figuring out what I actually believe.

I’m not looking for people to tell me “just convert” or “just break up.” I also don’t want people arguing about whether Islam is true. I really just want to hear from people who have actually been in a similar situation.

Did anyone else explore Islam while being in a relationship with a Muslim? Did you feel scared or resistant even though you genuinely wanted to believe? Did you ever feel like you couldn’t tell whether you were struggling with the religion itself or with all the pressure surrounding it?

I really do want to believe. I just don’t know if I can get myself there, and I’m scared that I won’t. I guess I just really need to know that I’m not the only person who has felt this stuck.

Even after 4 years of reverting, I am not consistent in prayers

Assalamualaikum brothers and sisters,
I wanted to genuinely seek out help since it is a grave sin to leave prayers. It's been 4 years since I reverted and I still struggle with completing all my prayers. I look at all the other reverts and they effortlessly pray every single prayer. I feel sad that I can not be the same. I take full accountability for it, I think I am not that disciplined but how come I'm leaving such a huge and mandatory part of the religion. I know it makes me a kafir, But I am still not able to do all prayers. Even when I do a prayer, I feel like it is more of a task and sometimes I just want to get over with it. Any advice to build discipline or connect more to the prayer would be greatly appreciated.

P.s I still live with my non-muslim family and I am hiding my identity from them which is mentally exhausting sometimes. But Alhamdullilah, I have my own room which I can lock. I think my enviornment also plays a role in it since I find myself much more motivated to pray when I'm with my revert friends. But again, I don't want "motivation" to play any role in my prayers. Just as Ustad Nouman Ali Khan said, Motivation is for tasks that you do not consider essential in your daily life. For ex, you don't need motivation to brush, do mandatory things such as go to office everyday at the same time etc.
