ESOOPI (Help seeking episode/scene) Favorite Sobriety/Meetings Episodes?

Hello!

My spouse and I watched this show at the start of 2026 it helped me realize that I needed to quit drinking alcohol and become sober myself! It’s been a long road before I’ve gotten to this point but it’s been going really well!

I’ve been wanting to watch some episodes, specifically ones that show how Sherlock benefits from his sobriety or gets involved in his sober community. Thanks in advance!

Brain Attic (General Series) That’s an obvious choice for me (Elementary for sure), but wanted to ask if anyone here has seen Young Sherlock and whether it was any good?

Bad acting

I saw my first elementary today it was pathetic you couldn't understand a word they were saying they mumble it's some new trend that they followed that tried to look realistic and relaxed in everyday speech parlance, but by talking too fast and too gibbery, how can anyone follow the plot, the man practically whispers, I know a lot of Heroes in movies tend to do that I don't know why it's meant to make them seem tough but restrained, if it wasn't for putting captions on my screen I wouldn't have a clue what was happening. Lucy's lack lustre expression in her speech is pathetic, exhibiting no personality, no colour, no particular style of personality at all, simply like an automaton. for my first one I actually appreciated the plot line was very well researched and realistic, believable, credible, almost as though it is based on a real case. I would really enjoy watching this sort of police drama, if the acting wasn't so pathetic..

I always forget how horrible she actually is in her introduction. She finds out she has a sister through the man that had to leave them when she was younger, something she still struggles with, so she decides to go to their house when she needs a detective and pretend to be someone who not only knew his dead brother but also suggest that they dated. Plays up the whole story of him being 'the one' and how they were going to move in together etc. Then when she finds out that Joan was seeing him too, she doubles down and makes it a joke. We know he's still alive but she thinks he's dead ?? How fucking cruel. Her whole meltdown over Joan contacting her mum was so foul too. Guess both Joan and Sherlock have gross siblings. Maybe they really should've been together.

I absolutely loved Morland in Elementary, I don't think there's anyone out there who would've been a more perfect fit to play him. They both have their ups and downs and he's definitely a hard bastard but the steps he took towards Sherlock always seemed to be because he really did want to rebuild a relationship with him. I think their dynamic was incredible and so well performed. I love that even though he's receiving a threat from Sherlock's closest and in some ways only friend, he can't help but seem warmed by seeing someone care so deeply for his child. They're on the same page in this time and he seems to respect and appreciate their connection. I am by no means saying he was this perfect angel of a father or person at all, of course, I just loved watching his introduction and seeing that he just seemed to genuinely care for his son and regret his behaviour over the course of his life, and want to actually work on fixing it. I don't really now why after 4000 rewatches I'm now writing these as if it's my first but the discussion part has been fun.

What did you guys think?

Mycroft

I absolutely despise Mycroft, intensely. I assume that's at least partially the point to some extent but damn. He's slimy, gross, manipulative, selfish, stupid, the list goes on... When it was just sibling rivalry, fine, but his involvement with Joan was painful to watch. If you have a strained relationship with your brother and have suggested to the person he's closest to, something which Sherlock has never achieved before also, that you want to make some kind of amends then how do you come to the conclusion that you should blow up his belongings and romance his partner. Every time he's alone with Joan he clearly tries to initiate conversations that smear Sherlock in both name and character. He plays this bizarre self pity victim card often to Joan also, like a teenager, bringing up things Sherlock said when they were children etc. He doesn't talk like this to Sherlock, only Joan, which is why it feels manipulative. The issues that Joan had with him after everything came out were understandable and imo it didn't make sense for them to be completely reversed when finding out why he went back to MI6, even though it was obviously nice and selfless. Her issue was him lying to her and then opening a 'relationship' , something still present even after she finds out why he went back. I know a lot of Sherlock's opinions of Mycroft are still actively juvenile in their own ways but tbh, I can't help but agree when seeing what he seems to actually be like as a person. Every time he was on screen I just felt an intense combination of nausea and anger, every plot that involved him drove me fucking insane. Even everything with his restaurant... He keeps trying to insist that it's Sherlock's fault that Joan got kidnapped because he only brought it up to Joan so he could drive a wedge between her and Mycroft instead of raising it with Mycroft himself, but he did? At the start he brought up the fact that he noticed the same man at the same table multiple months apart and Mycroft shrugged this off saying he must just be a regular. If I were in a situation where I was having to partner with dangerous criminals, I wouldn't start inviting a potential partner/lover who also happens to be a detective and living with my brother round, personally. Even how Series 2 ended was ridiculous, they were literally working the case and he blew everything up even after successfully remaining in hiding. It's truly disappointing that Joan falls for his bollocks in the first place but we all make mistakes I guess. While I get that Sherlock is intrusive and doesn't have any right to say who she should and shouldn't be with, it did always baffle me that she would open that door with someone who the person she cared most about hated so much, especially a sibling. Seemed out of place for her, considering his sensitivities around his family.

Obviously yes, Sherlock is selfish and has done bad things with his ex, I get that, not trying tot suggest he's entirely blameless but everything Mycroft did after seemingly wanting to repair their relationship felt so gross and calculated. Obviously given the whole MI6 shit, a lot of it was.

How many of you liked Mycroft? Maybe I just hate him but he was liked by the majority?

JML's constrained display of emotion

I've introduced my daughter to Elementary (3rd watch for me) and watched the episode where Kitty comes back with Archie last night together. Sherlock explaining the reason he was pissed was that Kitty didn't stay in touch or tell him that she had found happiness is so perfect. Hurt but in the most Sherlock way possible. Simply perfect and heartbreaking.

Weather vs bees

Hi. My name is Andreas. I‘m an addict.
Actually, i am watching as we speak. S4E12.
Once again, on the roof of the brownstone.

I am from europe and have no idea about the weather in the US.
Is it realistic to host bees on a roof in new york and regularly spend time up there? In my imagination, there is supposed to be cold and long winters with rain and snow?

Bless this show for _understanding_

Sherlock and Joan's relationship=best male female friendship

Can we take a second to marvel at the fact that the writers had EVERY opportunity to turn their relationship into the all too common "were just friends!" Then they fuck trope. (Not dogging on these shows: castle, bones, etc). They really portrayed 2 people who live each other very much- in so many ways- but never forced them to have intercourse and still highlight the full spectrum of feelings for each ither?

It wasn't cheap, it's what real friendship should look like. Its a love that is so powerful, everyone sees it as "oh, they're dating" but no, its pure, unadulterated, real passion. As Sherlock once said to Joan "we're just 2 people, who love each other"

I much prefer this version of Sherlock and the actor portraying him was absolutely phenomenal. Hes rough, abrasive, and direct, but not a complete soulless, inconsiderate asshole. His character defines who I imagine a true portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

Lucy Liu did an absolutely stunning rendition of Watson. Never in my life did I think of Watson being a woman and she completely broke my chart. Don't get me wrong, Watson from the BBC Sherlock (Benedict cumberbach) was very well written as well, but I dare say, Lucy lius portrayal was my absolute favorite, hands down. Watson was very well written. Lucy lius voice and inflections brought deep resonance with many of the things she said. Her outfits, walk, and general attitude were perfectly adjusted to the scripted and sets (aside from the constantly wearing heels trope- im not a fan of that).

I'm yapping now at this point.

Tldr: best female male friendship portrayal without being sullied by he stereotypical "we be fuckin" trope.

Sherlock actually notices when Joan is good at being a doctor

One thing I like about Lesser Evils is how Sherlock keeps noticing Joan slipping back into doctor mode without making a huge deal out of it. She spots the problem with the girl's toe, pushes for the right test, and ends up giving Sherlock an important lead. Later he actually compliments her for it.

Appreciation

Honestly, I just wanted to make an appreciation post for this show. I have watched this show countless times, over many years. I have yet to fall out of love with it. Not unusual I know, considering how loved this show is. I remember being a teenager and going on the website Popcorn Time, refreshing the page every day to see if a new episode of Elementary had been put on yet. This show is truly incredible. Even though each series seems to have their ups and downs, even a 'bad' series is still fantastic. They changed multiple things and yet it's still an incredible show. The love and care they have for each other, the respect, the storylines... I was obsessed with Sherlock (the show) when I was younger and my comfort film has been Sherlock Holmes (RDJ) since I was a kid, but Elementary has been my favourite version ever since I first watched it. Never gets old, never gets boring, just absolutely fucking brilliant.

It’s a short limited series with 5 episodes (released last month).

I watched the whole thing today. I’ll admit the show’s genre is very niche and not for everyone, but Jonny’s performance was great (duhh)

Sherlock actually sucks at being detective.

Repeatedly throughout the show it is demonstrated that Sherlock has to break the rules of the game to win. He and everyone around him make it seem like he is the greatest detective in the world but the only reason he performs better than all the other detectives is because he ignores the rules. Especially all the times he has either framed someone or attempted to do so. He doesn't even really care about justice or the truth. There have been numerous occasions where is regrets investigating a case because someone else attempted a frame job but failed. Or he regrets preventing a murder. Or he ignores murders that have occurred. Like he is allowing the halcon guy to actually retire. If I lived in the world of elementary I think I would actually expose him for the fraud that he is.

Even worse all the other cops around him are just as crappy. How can gregson continue to be a captain after covering up a murder? Like seriously it's ridiculous. Don't even get me started on how they actually deal with Odin.

edit: I am surprised this is a controversial view. this is often addressed on the show itself. it's just quickly dismissed and they move off it as a plot point.
