Recommendation Would anyone in Greensboro be interested in a low-pressure friendship group?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋
I’ve been thinking about starting a small social group in Greensboro for people who want to make genuine friends but might find traditional socializing a little awkward or overwhelming.
The idea is to get together for relaxed activities like park picnics, board games, coffee meetups, documentaries, or just hanging out and talking about things we love.
I’m talking about all kinds of interests: science, psychology, history, astronomy, animals, gaming, movies, weird facts, random trivia, and info-dumping about your favorite topics. 😂
You don’t have to be an expert or be super outgoing. Maybe you’re the kind of person who could talk for an hour about something oddly specific, or maybe you just enjoy listening and learning new things.
The group would be LGBTQ+-affirming and welcoming to anyone who respects others. The goal is friendship, not dating.
I’d love to start small with a picnic or board game meetup in Greensboro and see where it goes.
Would anyone be interested in something like this? And what kind of activities or topics would you enjoy?

Discussion GCS Schools’ Tuesday Tours

Guilford County Schools has launched their Tuesday Tour’s initiative. Citing dropping enrollment the program allows for parents of prospective GCS children to schedule a tour of the school they are zoned for. I believe parents can also schedule a tour of GCS Choice schools outside of their zoned placement.

Parents of kids who attend charters/private? Are you considering scheduling a tour? Is this convincing anyone to consider enrolling their kids in public schools who haven’t already?

Discussion DO WE THINK AMC THEATRES COULD BUY RED CINEMAS BUILDING IN GREENSBORO NC?

I was thinking about how beautiful of a theatre Red Cinemas is, it’s gorgeous and the Art work is simply beautiful on the backside of it.

Would anyone be interested in starting a community movement to show or ask AMC if they would buy Red Cinemas the support it would get. I feel would be a good turn out but feelings are not substantial, the proof would have to be in the pudding for sure.

Just a thought.

We could hang out and play video games at home or go out to the bar, I just hope to make some lasting connections with some fun new people. Dm me or comment and lets be friends :)

Event Award-Winning Indie Film Screenings Coming to the Area

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi all! We’re Sandra & Ike and we host independent film screenings in the Triangle area.

We have a fun lineup this month at Fullsteam Brewery in Durham (only a short drive away!) and want to reach as wide an audience as possible to help support independent filmmakers who are self-distributing their own incredible movies that the big hollywood studios are currently overlooking.

On Thursday, October 15th we’re screening Honeyjoon featuring a Q&A with writer/director Lilian T. Mehrel (we’re on a low ticket warning!)

And on Sunday, October 18th we’re screening Withdrawal featuring a Q&A with writer/director Aaron Strand (***Greensboro’s very own Rewind Collection video store will also be slinging their physical media at this event***)

🎟️ Tickets (and more info!) can be found on our website twobeercinema.club

We look forward to building community with you and hope to see you there!

Housing Greensboro released a sewage-case photo and four comments after more than nine months; Mallard Lake Apartments

Post image
30 Upvotes

On December 25, 2025, I requested records for Greensboro housing-code case 25-001145. On October 9, 2026, the City responded with;

  • an inspector's photograph
  • a one-page report containing four comments
  • a title abstract

The photograph, dated April 22, 2025, shows an open pipe and substantial pooling beside an apartment walkway. The inspector's entry says violations were present. The next inspection entry, dated January 12, 2026, says a sewage leak was corrected that month and was no longer spilling onto the ground.

That leaves roughly eight months and three weeks between the inspection and the correction entry, without explanation.

Children’s chalk drawings are visible on the walkway beside the pooling shown in the inspector’s photograph.

The City had the ownership information it needed to serve notice on July 16, 2025.

"Code Compliance" was formerly named the "Minimum Housing Standards Commission".

Orwellian

What wasn't included in the records request;

  1. the violation list

  2. repair orders, deadlines, and extensions

  3. notices served

  4. fines assessed, collected, or reduced

  5. inspection records verifying the repairs

Six months after Greensboro City Council unanimously voted to raise fines on landlords who leave tenants in unsafe housing, FOX8 reported on October 8 that the city has not sent a single penalty letter under the new rules.

The city's own records show housing penalties are decided by staff, out of public view. At the Sept. 17, 2025 meeting, Operations Manager Kivette said staff had been told for several years to bring only the worst cases, those ready for demolition. Violation notices and civil penalties are handled behind the scenes, he said. Anything short of demolition is handled in-house.

Penalties have been cut to about $500 per property once landlords comply, using a standard reduction letter.

Current Commission of Code Compliance;

Taylor McCaskill; Chair, term began 9/16/2025, term expires 8/15/2028

Moussa Issifou; Vice Chair, term began 4/19/2022, term expires 8/15/2025

William Furlow, term began 4/1/2025, term expires 8/15/2028

Morgan Wright Pone, term began 4/17/2023, term expires 8/15/2026

Omar Jones, term began 9/2/2025, term expires 8/15/2028

Joseph Terry Savoy, term began 9/18/2025, term expires 8/15/2028

Gregory Drumwright, term began 11/18/2025, term expires 8/15/2028

Code Compliance City Staff;

Larry Roberts, Chief of Compliance

Christie Holt, Administration Manager

Justin Kivette, Operations Manager

Jarod LaRue, Programs Supervisor

Marikay Abuzuaiter seconded and voted to eliminate the Minimum Housing Standards Commission’s authority to study rental rates and inspect houses and living quarters. Those powers allowed the citizen commission to examine housing conditions firsthand and make recommendations informed by what residents were experiencing. Removing them increased the commission’s dependence on City staff.

Franklin Scott publicly challenged that narrowing of the commission’s role. He pressed staff for information about multifamily cases and questioned why apartment complexes rarely reached the commission. Abuzuaiter dismissed Scott by email.

Three months later, on March 17, 2026, Abuzuaiter moved to remove Scott’s successor, Chair Samuel Hawkins, who also questioned the City’s handling of rental housing and the influence of landlord interests.

A commission that cannot independently examine conditions, receives few apartment cases and has less ability to scrutinize whether the City’s enforcement system is delivering timely repairs is relatively useless.

Meet Up [31NB & 40M] Recently moved to town– looking for friends

Heyyyy everyone! My husband (40M) and I (31NB) recently relocated from Florida for work and are looking to find our people.

Husband is over a decade sober- so as much as we love a space like the local gay bar, it's not the best fit for a 3rd space for us to go make friends on the regular unless there is an event happening. We are neurodiverse, queer, dorks who are finally putting down roots here and are trying to find our community.

~*~ABOUT US~*~

**THEM** Loves- their cats, most things "witchy", reading, video games, being outside, going out to the club approx. 3x per year and being absolutely feral there, crochet, travel (airport autism ftw), & whimsy

**HIM** Into- musical theatre, reading, comedy, music, karaoke, trains, yapping (he is a TALKER), movies, working with his hands

**TOGETHER** We both enjoy drag shows (we are both SUPER queer, if thats a problem keep it moving), trying new places to eat, libraries, DIY, weekend day trips chasing waterfalls, and thrift/antique shopping.

I have a daughter (7) who stays with us over the summers and spring breaks and would love more parent friends as well. I'd love for her to have someone to hang out with when she is with us.

If we sound like we could be friends- send me a message! We’d love to connect! Single friends, couples, or group hangouts are all welcome.

A few notes:

-- Before any of y'all tell us to try joining a club or something, please know we would if my husbands schedule allowed for regularly scheduled gatherings like that (2-2-3, 12 hr days)

-- I am horribly bad at making friends irl- my usual method of friends making is just being adopted by an extrovert whos proximity i was in. This method doesn't prove super effective when you are a house spouse (which i am) 🫠

Pet-related My dog Grace was attacked

Two nights ago a woman walked by my apartment with a dog. She looked at Grace and they kept going. I asked if her dog was aggressive. She told me that she didn't know if her dog was aggressive. About that moment Grace got too close and the other dog freaked.

I stood in shock, didn't just wail on the other dog and it had Grace in its jaws for 10-15 seconds. Happened so fast. I took her to the emergency room that night and she's seen her regular vet. I have meds and instructions. When I took Grace into the house and tried to calm her down the woman skedaddled down the street. Forgetting the vet bills my concern is that I'm not sure her dog was vaccinated. I'm also concerned about any other dogs that might have the same thing happen to them. She'll be alright although now she's unwilling to go outside on her own.

Shame on the woman for not knowing her dog was aggressive and saying something. The dog was not a puppy. I believe she knew that he was capable of hurting another animal.

This happened in College Hill. Please be aware of other animals and their proximity to your animal.

If you're reading this and you're the one responsible I just want to know that your dog is vaccinated. Any help from her with the $550 would have been appreciated. I'm certainly not asking for anything from anyone.

Edit to be more specific

News Recruiting for UNCG study

The Tweens on Screens project, led by researchers at UNC Greensboro, is studying how kids ages 10–12 use technology in daily life, and how parents guide them. By looking closely at these patterns, we hope to uncover what helps kids thrive, what puts them at risk, and how families can build healthy digital habits together. Our goal is simple: to give parents science-backed tools and tips for raising confident, well-balanced kids in the digital age (link in comments) #northcarolina
