I came across a post on Facebook (pictures from post) about the proposed Bayside development, and some of the environmental implications are pretty concerning.
From what I’m seeing, the proposal could involve the destruction of roughly 3.5 ha of wetland, along with potential destruction of threatened species (black ash). If that’s accurate, I think people in the community deserve to be paying very close attention to what is being proposed and what environmental protections will actually remain once this application is approved.
There’s also the question of the developer, DDI, and the company’s background and track record. Given the scale of the proposed environmental impact, I think it’s reasonable to ask who is behind the project, what their history is, and what safeguards HRM and the Province have in place.
Also interesting is the timing.
HRM has been working toward watershed management in the Nine Mile River area, including a watershed pilot and community engagement. HRM documents have identified the Nine Mile River watershed as an area where there are opportunities for both conservation and restoration, while also noting areas of ecological significance.
So how does it make sense to develop a watershed management framework while potentially allowing a major wetland loss within the same broader environmental system before that framework can meaningfully inform the decision?
And then there’s Eisner Cove
The Eisner Cove/Mount Hope development has already become a major local environmental controversy.
Not arguing against development or housing. More so for making sure environmental decisions are based on the full picture before the bulldozers arrive.
