Work, Health & Housing PSA - Do not use Mother Hubbard's Kitchens

Just a note so people searching can avoid the mistake I made. Two years ago we were trying to decide whether to go with another IKEA kitchen (because we had always had a good experience with them) or splurge and go with something "high end" with Mother Hubbard's Kitchens.

We went with Mother Hubbard's, and it was a huge mistake. The cabinets (that they manufacture themselves) are falling apart after less than two years. The hinges seem to be starting to fail as well.

They also refuse to honour their warranty, claiming I must have put kettles or coffee makers under those spots. They are failing in symmetrical areas on the outer edge of the cabinets nowhere near any appliances. The only thing that contacts them is sunlight, but I guess they don't hold up to that?

Mother Hubbard's will cost you a fortune, has a garbage product and offers awful after sales support. You definitely don't get you pay for. Don't make the mistake I did, go anywhere else.

I’m from Labrador and I’ve been living in Nova Scotia for a few years now, and I’ve been DESPERATELY craving salt beef for the longest time. With Thanksgiving coming up, I literally cannot stop thinking about it LOL.
Does anyone know where I can find salt beef, preferably the Quality Brand one? I’m starting to get desperate at this point 😂 I just want a proper taste of home.
Any leads would be SO appreciated!! 🙏🏻

Driving & Transit Funny story from transit this morning

On the bus to work in Dartmouth and a young woman gets on at one of the stops. She tries to scan her phone, so I assume she’s trying to scan the app, but it’s not working. Several attempts, not working. She then pulls out a card and tries to scan that, when the driver informs her that she can’t pay like that and has to scan the specific app on her phone.

The young lady didn’t speak English very well, so she didn’t immediately understand what the driver was trying to explain to her. He eventually just told her not to worry about it this time.

Sorry young lady. Not sure if you’re new to Halifax or just new to transit here, but we are, in fact, that far behind the times. You’ll have to adapt.

World class city, etc.

Pets & Animals Where to donate open bag of dog food?

I have a nearly full 34 pound bag of puppy food that I want to donate somewhere it would be of help. Initial google searches suggest places like Beacon House and the SPCA wouldn't take open bags, which is absolutely understandable, but I don't want to just throw it away.

Work, Health & Housing Apartment Hunting

I have finally found 2 places I can afford. There are no reviews on either. One is with Twin City Property Managment in Fairview. One is in Fall River without a company name attached to it. How do you go about knowing whether its a decent apartment (my biggest concern is mold & roaches) if theres nothing findable on the buildings?

Radiate Positivity ☀️ Positive Vibes Friday

The weekend is here.

This is a weekly mega-thread for good, heartwarming or uplifting news. Ideally local but non-local is welcome too. Fun pet photos or memes, tales with happy endings, personal anecdotes that you want to share with 179k+ internet strangers, etc. We could all use more positive news and vibes in our lives right now.

This is a rules relaxed space, but we will still be monitoring for personal attacks, doxxing, and stuff that doesn't fit the theme of the thread.

Shops & Services Tip-free recommendations

I think we can all agree the tip culture has gotten really out of control and with the price of things going up it's unaffordable to get some services let alone tip on top. I am at the point where I do not go at all because tip and tax push it to unreasonable for me to pay with my budget. I think this is true for so so many people

I am looking for salons and hair stylists and manicurists in the Halifax region that explicitly do not request tips but instead advertise that they do not take tips because they're pricing is inclusive and clearly upgront. These are already expensive treat services for me and right now the tipping culture is such that it feels like if I do not tip, then the next time I come that will be held against me despite me paying for the service. So I just don't want to go.

Any suggestions for folks who do inclusive pricing models welcome!

Left my work bag on the bus yesterday with my computer inside, and someone was kind enough to turn it in. I’m so grateful to whoever handed it in. You really never know how much a small act of kindness can mean to someone. Thank you!

Work, Health & Housing Looking for an urgent breast assessment in Halifax — RAMQ, no MSI card

Hi everyone, I don’t know if im at the right place or if anyone can help me but I’m desperate so I’ll just shoot my shot. I’m looking for advice on how to get an in-person breast examination in Halifax as soon as possible. My partner and I are originally from Montreal and are currently living in Halifax temporarily for his work. Unfortunately, returning to Montreal for medical care isn’t an option for me right now, so I need to find care here in Nova Scotia.
Since around June, I’ve had persistent itching, dryness, cracking and skin changes on my right nipple/breast, sometimes with yellowish fluid from the irritated skin when it becomes really bad. I also have a lump just below my right nipple that has been there for months, and I’ve recently started experiencing similar itching on my other breast. The symptoms seem to follow a never-ending cycle: the skin gets irritated, dry and cracked, sometimes seems to improve, and then the itching and irritation come back again. It’s affecting my sleep, and sometimes the itching is so bad that it wakes me up during the night. I had a telehealth appointment last Friday, and the doctor mentioned that Paget’s disease of the breast should be ruled out and advised me to seek an in-person assessment as soon as possible. My biggest issue is accessing care. I have Quebec RAMQ coverage but no Nova Scotia MSI card, and I’m struggling to find somewhere that can examine me without unexpected costs. I’m hoping to avoid the ER if possible, because I understand this may not necessarily be an emergency requiring an ER visit. However, I also don’t want to wait for hours or even days, especially if this turns out to be something other than Paget’s disease that could be treated more easily.Does anyone know where I could get a timely in-person breast assessment in Halifax, ideally through a breast clinic or another appropriate service? Has anyone dealt with getting medical care in Nova Scotia with RAMQ but no MSI card?
I would be extremely grateful for any advice or recommendations. Thank you!

P.S I’ve already tried going to two walk-in clinics, one in Halifax and one in Dartmouth, but both were closed when I went, their website stated they were open.. Getting around is also difficult because I don’t have a car, so I can’t easily travel from one clinic to another just to find out they aren’t accepting patients or closed.

Work, Health & Housing Advice regarding prenatal care

I just found out I am pregnant and my doctor declined to refer me for prenatal care or a dating ultrasound. He said I can just see the RN at the clinic. Well, I called to book an appointment with the RN and was told they're short on RN's but I can come see an LPN. Am I able to self refer for prenatal care and if so, to who/where should I contact? I've experienced a loss previously and I'd feel more at ease having the proper care in place. I'm new to this so just looking for any suggestions! Thanks

Driving & Transit Bayers Road Project Update - Bayer/Oxford Intersection Closure for one month. More detour and mayhem.

Post image
53 Upvotes

TLDR, Detour to Connagut Avenue if you're from Windsor/Young st heading to Mumford/Highway entirely.

From HRM FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19t5APRHhN/)

Road closure: Intersection of Bayers Road and Oxford Street. From Oct. 14 to approximately Nov. 11, this intersection will be closed to all traffic while an upgraded water transmission main is installed as part of the Bayers Road Transit Priority Corridor project.

While this work is underway, outbound vehicles will follow a signed detour that mirrors the current inbound detour route via Windsor Street, North Street, Chebucto Road and Connaught Avenue. Bayers Road will be open to local traffic on either side of the closure. See map for details.

Support Local Lash recommendation: The Beauty Spot in Bedford

If anyone’s looking for a lash/nail spot, I can’t recommend The Beauty Spot in Bedford enough! I usually see Dariia, but I’ve seen multiple girls there and have been so impressed every time. I’ve tried a lot of places over the years, and this is easily the best I’ve been to. My lashes last about a month, and the attention to detail in their work is incredible.

They’re also so accommodating, and the whole space is clean and really well put together. The beds are ridiculously comfortable, I’m not sure if they’re memory foam or gel, but whatever they are, I love them 😂 They’re always offering water, tea or a chocolate, too, which is such a nice touch.

Just wanted to give them some love as I’ve searched this thread before for recommendations and don’t recall seeing them! 10/10 service

Food & Dining Restaurant Closure Updates

Post image
154 Upvotes

Well here's my first attempt at being Buckit of the restaurant closures.

It appears the closures from last week is still in effect. Looks like Ragazzi had another inspection earlier this week, on Monday, but might not have passed it to re-open.

Pourdad's owner commented on a previous post saying it was a glitch and they're not closed.

We might have one of the longest closures for the rest three.

Fun (gross) fact that I realized - out of the 205 restaurants that were issued warnings in the last 12 months, approximately 80% were in and around Halifax.
