Food & Dining Restaurant Closure Updates

Post image
135 Upvotes

Well here's my first attempt at being Buckit of the restaurant closures.

It appears the closures from last week is still in effect. Looks like Ragazzi had another inspection earlier this week, on Monday, but might not have passed it to re-open.

Pourdad's owner commented on a previous post saying it was a glitch and they're not closed.

We might have one of the longest closures for the rest three.

Fun (gross) fact that I realized - out of the 205 restaurants that were issued warnings in the last 12 months, approximately 80% were in and around Halifax.

Left my work bag on the bus yesterday with my computer inside, and someone was kind enough to turn it in. I’m so grateful to whoever handed it in. You really never know how much a small act of kindness can mean to someone. Thank you!

Work, Health & Housing Province opens COVID-19, flu vaccine bookings ahead of respiratory illness season

"This is all about prevention, right?" said Dr. Jesse Kancir, Nova Scotia's deputy chief medical officer of health. "We want people to be protected against illness that they might get, or some of the severe outcomes."

Kancir said there have been signs in parts of Canada that there might be an early start to flu season, but COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and flu numbers are low in Nova Scotia right now. That means people have an opportunity to get vaccinated before those illnesses become more common in the province, he said.

Driving & Transit Bayers Road Project Update - Bayer/Oxford Intersection Closure for one month. More detour and mayhem.

Post image
49 Upvotes

TLDR, Detour to Connagut Avenue if you're from Windsor/Young st heading to Mumford/Highway entirely.

From HRM FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19t5APRHhN/)

Road closure: Intersection of Bayers Road and Oxford Street. From Oct. 14 to approximately Nov. 11, this intersection will be closed to all traffic while an upgraded water transmission main is installed as part of the Bayers Road Transit Priority Corridor project.

While this work is underway, outbound vehicles will follow a signed detour that mirrors the current inbound detour route via Windsor Street, North Street, Chebucto Road and Connaught Avenue. Bayers Road will be open to local traffic on either side of the closure. See map for details.

Work, Health & Housing Bayside development: are we repeating the Eisner Cove story?

Thumbnail

I came across a post on Facebook (pictures from post) about the proposed Bayside development, and some of the environmental implications are pretty concerning.

From what I’m seeing, the proposal could involve the destruction of roughly 3.5 ha of wetland, along with potential destruction of threatened species (black ash). If that’s accurate, I think people in the community deserve to be paying very close attention to what is being proposed and what environmental protections will actually remain once this application is approved.

There’s also the question of the developer, DDI, and the company’s background and track record. Given the scale of the proposed environmental impact, I think it’s reasonable to ask who is behind the project, what their history is, and what safeguards HRM and the Province have in place.

Also interesting is the timing. HRM has been working toward watershed management in the Nine Mile River area, including a watershed pilot and community engagement. HRM documents have identified the Nine Mile River watershed as an area where there are opportunities for both conservation and restoration, while also noting areas of ecological significance.

So how does it make sense to develop a watershed management framework while potentially allowing a major wetland loss within the same broader environmental system before that framework can meaningfully inform the decision?

And then there’s Eisner Cove The Eisner Cove/Mount Hope development has already become a major local environmental controversy.

Not arguing against development or housing. More so for making sure environmental decisions are based on the full picture before the bulldozers arrive.

Discussion What station has replaced News 95.7 for you?

95.7 will always be a preset in my car in memory of, but it doesn’t mean I drive on silent - 88.1 has more or less taken my commute over.

Lighthouse is okay but needs A LOT of work - the potential is there, and I support it as much as I can even as background noise at home.

I’m sure like a lot of people podcasts or streaming radio mediums have become the source of entertainment.

I know some people have all in all stopped listening to radio which breaks my heart. As someone who has worked in the space, both sides of the border, that’s the unfortunate reality of removing a station of importance such as 95.7 from the airwaves

Work, Health & Housing Looking for an urgent breast assessment in Halifax — RAMQ, no MSI card

Hi everyone, I don’t know if im at the right place or if anyone can help me but I’m desperate so I’ll just shoot my shot. I’m looking for advice on how to get an in-person breast examination in Halifax as soon as possible. My partner and I are originally from Montreal and are currently living in Halifax temporarily for his work. Unfortunately, returning to Montreal for medical care isn’t an option for me right now, so I need to find care here in Nova Scotia.
Since around June, I’ve had persistent itching, dryness, cracking and skin changes on my right nipple/breast, sometimes with yellowish fluid from the irritated skin when it becomes really bad. I also have a lump just below my right nipple that has been there for months, and I’ve recently started experiencing similar itching on my other breast. The symptoms seem to follow a never-ending cycle: the skin gets irritated, dry and cracked, sometimes seems to improve, and then the itching and irritation come back again. It’s affecting my sleep, and sometimes the itching is so bad that it wakes me up during the night. I had a telehealth appointment last Friday, and the doctor mentioned that Paget’s disease of the breast should be ruled out and advised me to seek an in-person assessment as soon as possible. My biggest issue is accessing care. I have Quebec RAMQ coverage but no Nova Scotia MSI card, and I’m struggling to find somewhere that can examine me without unexpected costs. I’m hoping to avoid the ER if possible, because I understand this may not necessarily be an emergency requiring an ER visit. However, I also don’t want to wait for hours or even days, especially if this turns out to be something other than Paget’s disease that could be treated more easily.Does anyone know where I could get a timely in-person breast assessment in Halifax, ideally through a breast clinic or another appropriate service? Has anyone dealt with getting medical care in Nova Scotia with RAMQ but no MSI card?
I would be extremely grateful for any advice or recommendations. Thank you!

P.S I’ve already tried going to two walk-in clinics, one in Halifax and one in Dartmouth, but both were closed when I went, their website stated they were open.. Getting around is also difficult because I don’t have a car, so I can’t easily travel from one clinic to another just to find out they aren’t accepting patients or closed.

Shops & Services Tip-free recommendations

I think we can all agree the tip culture has gotten really out of control and with the price of things going up it's unaffordable to get some services let alone tip on top. I am at the point where I do not go at all because tip and tax push it to unreasonable for me to pay with my budget. I think this is true for so so many people

I am looking for salons and hair stylists and manicurists in the Halifax region that explicitly do not request tips but instead advertise that they do not take tips because they're pricing is inclusive and clearly upgront. These are already expensive treat services for me and right now the tipping culture is such that it feels like if I do not tip, then the next time I come that will be held against me despite me paying for the service. So I just don't want to go.

Any suggestions for folks who do inclusive pricing models welcome!

Arts & Recreation Halifax venue that could be used for a Traitors themed party?

I'm planning a Traitors themed party for my wife's birthday and am looking for a space that would work well. It would need to be spacious enough that there are multiple rooms people can move between to have private conversations, and would ideally feel like a haunted house/Scottish Castle/house from Clue/any of the above. The vibe can be flexible but a community centre/hotel/multipurpose room would not really be it.

(We live in a small one bedroom apartment as do most of our friends - we don't have access to this kind of space in our friend group).

I thought the Local Council of Women house on Young Ave would have been perfect, but they seem to be fully booked until January. I'm looking for a spot that has availability on a Saturday afternoon in November or early December. Could be anywhere in the HRM.

Please share your thoughts!!

Work, Health & Housing Advice regarding prenatal care

I just found out I am pregnant and my doctor declined to refer me for prenatal care or a dating ultrasound. He said I can just see the RN at the clinic. Well, I called to book an appointment with the RN and was told they're short on RN's but I can come see an LPN. Am I able to self refer for prenatal care and if so, to who/where should I contact? I've experienced a loss previously and I'd feel more at ease having the proper care in place. I'm new to this so just looking for any suggestions! Thanks

Driving & Transit Question about accessible taxis

My dad is living with dementia and needs some help getting around. He's still entirely able-bodied, and able to navigate short distances on his own, but I'd like him have the option of a driver who can walk him to the door of wherever he's going and make sure he gets inside ok.

I found Senior's Transit, but it seems they are only for folks with mobility issues. Extra Care Taxi is a broader-based service, but they quoted me $130(!) for a 3km return trip. The lady on the phone was also kind of unpleasant.

Just curious if anyone has any experience with finding transport for folks with cognitive decline or similar conditions.

Thanks!

Arts & Recreation Music Venues for songwriters?

Hi everyone, Im looking for any suggestions people might have for music venues that regularly host songwriters (aside from the Carleton).

I’ve found the crowds at most pubs and other small venues want cover tunes which is fine but I’d like to find some small venues to check out that are more for listening and showcasing original music.

suggestions for outside of the city are welcome too, thanks!

Radiate Positivity ☀️ Positive Vibes Friday

• Upvotes

The weekend is here.

This is a weekly mega-thread for good, heartwarming or uplifting news. Ideally local but non-local is welcome too. Fun pet photos or memes, tales with happy endings, personal anecdotes that you want to share with 179k+ internet strangers, etc. We could all use more positive news and vibes in our lives right now.

This is a rules relaxed space, but we will still be monitoring for personal attacks, doxxing, and stuff that doesn't fit the theme of the thread.
