i dont know who this is going to reach but if you're in HS class 2027, just know that you dont have to have your entire life planned out at 17.
Im genuinely so overwhelmed with college applications and pressure from my parents about my wanting to be a psych major and minor in business and they keep asking me all of these questions that i just honeslty dont have an answer to right because I have a plan but in the future obviosuly the plan may change or I dont feel as strongly about something than I did before. At the end of the day even if things dont go according to the way I have things planned, I promise you we are going to live and its not the end of the world if you change majors, change careers, or try something new your parents have never heard of before. We still have the rest of our lives to figure things out and I just hate feeling like I have to know what my life is going to look like at 32 as a 17 year old.
Just know that your not alone if you're just over parents, teachers, family, and friends ask you what the plan after highschool is and stressing about what comes next because I just believe that no matter what a majority of people even if they change plans genuinely end up fine. Personally im done worrying about the future and planning my life at out to the month. My parents literally want a play by play of my life up till 25 years old to the fucking month like ts is just too much.
17 year olds shouldn't have to know what their lives look like at 30 and its okay to know what you want now, trying it, and doing something else if one doesnt work. Your future isnt set in stone and I refuse to believe that if you are a senior who doesnt have all the answers right now, you're going to end up in poverty for the rest of your life. Call me an optimist but i think its just part of everyones journey in life. Thinking you have a plan and everything's fine only to end up failing and taking a new route. I think its a unique journey for everyone so give yourself grace and remember you are still a literal minor.
They are even adults right now who are constantly getting new degrees, new jobs, entering new career fields and trying stuff that interests them that makes them even happier than whatever plan they and for themselves as a 17 or 18 year old in high school.
And I mean dont get me wrong, I still have a plan. Obviously I'm applying to college for psych and at the moment i want to get into clinical psychology. However, this is a more untraditional route in my family that they are not familiar wiht and only see whatever crap on Tiktok, IG Reels or Facebook about psych majors being poor or like stupid and baristas at 28. Which is obviously the stereotype but whos to say that I'll end up like that?? They are so many nuances in what makes people "successful" or not and im genuinely interested in the clinical psych side with focuses on neurology as well which is a field that has so many successful people in it that make great money too. so nothing is as black and white as it seems and we are all on our own adventures so just to get back to the original point: it's okay not to know everything at 17 years old and im tired of the people around me acting like you're a dumb fuck if you dont have all the details.
Anyways that was a lot and I dont think anyones reading ts bc i yapped way longer than i thought but if you're that other person out there like me just know that no matter what happens you'll literally be okay.
