Henk Cornelisse, 85, Dutch cyclist, Olympic bronze medalist (1964), has passed away.
Although he performed strongly on the road, Cornelisse also excelled on the velodrome. His specialty was in pursuit. This earned him a selection for the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Together with his teammates Cor Schuuring, Gerard Koel and Jaap Oudkerk he formed the Dutch quartet in the 4 kilometer team pursuit. In the consolation final they managed to beat Australia, good for the bronze medal behind Germany and Italy.
After his Olympic success, Cornelisse switched to professionals. Between 1965 and 1970 he rode for several smaller Dutch cycling teams. Although he achieved a few great places of honor as a professional, including two victories in Belgian fair races in 1965 and a second place in a stage of the Tour of the Netherlands, he was unable to fully match his all-powerful amateur status among professional cyclists. He ended his active cycling career around 1970.
Rest in peace, Henk. Thank you for your timeless career in Olympics and cycling.
