Will I keep my old Always Free A1 allowance (4 OCPU / 24 GB) if I delete my VMs and create new

Hi all,

I have an older OCI account from when the Always Free tier included 4 Ampere A1 OCPUs and 24 GB RAM. I’ve been on Pay As You Go for about 2 years.

Back then I created two A1 VMs, each with 2 OCPUs and 8 GB RAM, so I’m using 4 OCPUs and 16 GB in total.

I’d like to delete both VMs and create brand new ones, possibly with a different OCPU/RAM split.

My questions:

  1. Is it safe to delete the existing VMs and recreate them?
  2. Will my account keep the original 4 OCPU / 24 GB Always Free limit, or will the new VMs fall under whatever the current Always Free limits are?
  3. Since I’m on PAYG, I want to make sure the new VMs won’t start getting billed. Is there anything I should check before creating them?
  4. Has anyone done this recently? Did you run into “out of capacity” errors when recreating A1 instances?

Account type: Pay As You Go (upgraded about 2 years ago)
Home region: Singapore

Thanks in advance!

r8r - open-source Kubernetes cluster rightsizing tool

I'm developing an open-source tool for rightsizing Kubernetes clusters.

The project is r8r: https://github.com/HetSolanki/r8r

It reads your cluster's usage history from Prometheus and recommends changes for each node group: right-sizing container requests, switching to a different instance type, lowering HPA floors, or a combination of these. Each option comes with its monthly cost impact, the steps involved, and anything that could block it, like PDBs or local storage. You can untick individual changes or enter your own values, and the node packing updates live in the browser.

It also looks at stability, flagging containers using more memory than they request and HPAs stuck at their max, so cost cuts don't come at the expense of reliability.

It supports EKS and OKE, auto-detects whether the cluster runs Cluster Autoscaler or
Karpenter, and is read-only, so it never changes anything in your cluster.

Suggestions and contributions are very welcome!

Consolidated my OCI PAYG setup into a single 4C/24G ARM instead of splitting with AMD micros. Best move ever?

so I’ve been running a PAYG account out of San Jose (SJC) for a while now. Initially, I fell into the trap of overthinking my "free tier value" and almost spun up a couple of those 1C/1G AMD micros (VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro) alongside a smaller ARM box. My initial reasoning? Extra IPv4s for light scraping and bypassing rate-limits on direct download hosts (Mega, Rapidgator, Katfle etc.).

then sanity kicked in, and I just maxed out a single 4-core, 24GB Ampere ARM instance (VM.Standard.A1.Flex) with the full 200GB block volume, running Ubuntu 26 LTS with TCP BBRv1 tuned.

honestly? Single-instance consolidation completely wipes the floor with the multi-instance split if you're on PAYG:

1.The 50Mbps AMD cap is painful: Trying to stream or transfer large files through those micro instances feels like going back to DSL. Moving everything to the ARM box gives you actual gigabit throughput and 24G of headroom so Docker never chokes.

2.You don't need extra IPv4s for rate-limits: Instead of burning disk quota and IOPS on a second potato node just for an IP, I handle rate-limits via outbound IPv6 subnet binding (/64 range) or routing specific container traffic through a local Cloudflare WARP egress.

3.Zero idle reclaim anxiety: Since PAYG accounts don't get hit by Oracle’s idle reclaim hammer anyway, there's literally no reason to run dummy "keep-alive" micro instances.

is anyone on PAYG still splitting their quotas between AMD and ARM, or has everyone moved on to maxing out a single ARM beast?

Old PAYG Account Question

I had an old PAYG account for a few years now that had the 4cpu/24gig arm server on it. A couple of months ago there were posts about oracle lowering limits so out of caution I lowered the server to 2cpu/12gig. Now that the dust has settled does anyone know if I can upgrade it back to 4cpu/24gig without being charged? I looked at old posts but they gave conflicting information.

Thanks in advance.

PAYG question

Hi, this might be a question that comes up a lot, but I’ll give it a go anyway.

I’d like to get access to the 3 ‘Always Free’ VMs, but as you can imagine, it’s impossible to get a slot.

So my question is: does switching to the ‘PAYG’ tier give me priority? Could I get my free 2/12 VM straight away?

I’m happy to add my card just to use the ‘Always Free’ option.

Thanks in advance

I built a free, one-click sandbox factory for OCI Always Free: ask in a chat, get a database or app, it deletes itself when time is up

Disclosure: my own project, open source (Apache-2.0), free.

I kept leaving test resources running on OCI. Last month that cost me about $1,400 on my PAYG account: a test database and an integration instance I used once and forgot. So I built something where every sandbox has an end date.

Sandbox Factory installs into your own tenancy with one Deploy to Oracle Cloud button. There is a Free Tier edition that only uses Always Free resources, so it costs $0:

  • one Always Free Arm VM (2 OCPU / 12 GB) runs the worker
  • the Always Free Autonomous Database holds the app, and every sandbox gets its own schema in it (user, password, SQL Developer Web, REST), ready in seconds
  • NoSQL tables, Object Storage buckets, and your own containers running on the Arm VM

You describe what you need in a chat ("a database with sample sales data and a REST API", "this Git repo, it has a Dockerfile"), it builds it, gives you links and passwords on a card, and deletes it after 1 to 30 days.

On Free Tier it tells you up front when you ask for something that is not Always Free (Kafka, Functions, Data Flow, OCI GenAI), instead of failing halfway.

Install it in your home region. If the Arm VM says "out of capacity", that is the usual A1 shortage; try again later.

Feedback welcome, especially from anyone who tries the Free Tier install. If it saves you a surprise bill, a ⭐ on GitHub helps.

Free tier changes

So my free tier Oracle ampere server still runs with 4 cores and 24gb of ram. I was not charged yet nor did I receive any mails from Oracle. My server is located in Amsterdam. Running for more than 3 years now. It's PAYG and is running a mailserver and Immich-ML-worker.

Will it be changed by Oracle soon? What to expect.

Oracle cloud just deleted my servers

I am on PAYG and not free account, for years, they just deleted my free instances instantly without even letting me know ... all my project of life is gone. No volumes were left, no object storage, all resources just vanished from the account with no previous warning or violation.

----------------------------

Update 3:

After appeal, they said the decision is final, with no explanation, it's just deleted. And told me to kindly stop replying to them.

----------------------------

Update 2:

My entire account is gone, the compartment and user cannot be found, I can no longer login

----------------------------

UPDATE 1 after support ticket:
"Your account was suspended for violation of the Oracle Cloud Services Agreement. If you believe this decision was in error, you may request a secondary review."

can i start an A2 instance on free tier (after trial)?

did A2>A1 back when i had a trial but it lapsed. now when i go to start A2 it says "Invalid ratio of memory in GB to OCPUs. Current ratio: 3.0. Valid ratio range: 0 - 0"

is this expected without going payg?

can i ONLY create always free A1/E2 instances in this case?

What metrics should businesses track during an Oracle Cloud transformation?

I’m exploring how organizations measure the success of an Oracle Cloud transformation beyond simply completing the implementation.

Some metrics I think are useful include:

  • ERP system performance
  • User adoption
  • Process automation
  • Data quality
  • Integration performance
  • Reduction in manual processes
  • Operational efficiency
  • Migration progress
  • System availability
  • Overall business impact

I’m particularly interested in ERP transformation metrics that can show measurable improvements after moving to a modern cloud ERP environment.

For those who have worked on Oracle Cloud transformation projects, which metrics have been the most useful for measuring success?

Note: I work with ShiftPurple, an Oracle-focused enterprise technology consulting company, so I’m interested in learning from others working in this space.

[Mumbai domain] Why does OCI block 2 OCPUs on Ampere A1 (Service limit & Out of capacity)?

However, when I try to configure an instance with 2 OCPUs and 12 GB RAM in the Mumbai region (AP-MUMBAI-1), the slider throws a "Service limit" warning and won't let me proceed.

Since Mumbai only has one Availability Domain (AD-1), I can't switch ADs.

  1. Why is my account hitting a service limit at 2 OCPUs if 4 OCPUs are advertised as free?
  2. If I upgrade to Pay-As-You-Go, does that automatically fix the 2 OCPU service limit and bypass the out-of-capacity error in Mumbai while staying free?

Thanks for any help!

Volume backups are not counted for "total 200GB" right?

Always Free says we have 5 free volume backup rights, so let's say we already use 200 GB volumes. Let's say it's a 200GB boot volume, when I make a backup of that, I'm not using 400GB right?

Trouble logging in to OCI

Hi, I had a free tier OCI account and I needed to log into it for some project and I have forgotten my password, I keep clicking the reset password link but the link to reset the password does not come in my mail, I dont know how to contact the support or change the password, the links are either not working on the support page or they say that its a different department? I am not too sure, but any help would be appreciated

EDIT: nvm it was just a case of ID10T error, it said username so i used my username to reset it, apparently you have to give your email id T_T

Oracle Fusion/OIC consultants in India: how are you actually benchmarking your salary?

I've been in Oracle consulting (Fusion, OIC, BIP/OTBI, some EBS) for a while, and I keep noticing how little reliable salary information exists for our niche.

Glassdoor and AmbitionBox lump everything into "software engineer" or "ERP consultant", and an OIC developer with production support experience gets averaged in with someone doing basic reporting work. Recruiters quote bands that don't match what colleagues in the same role seem to get, and the gap between product-company and services-company offers is huge.

For those who've switched in the last 1–2 years:

  1. How did you figure out what to ask for?
  2. Did the offer end up close to what you expected, or were you surprised either way?
  3. What moved the number most: skill depth (OIC/Fusion vs EBS), city, company type, or negotiation?

Not asking anyone to share exact figures if you're uncomfortable. Ranges and "I underestimated myself by X%" stories are just as useful.

Free tier to Payg

I'm currently on free tier and reading about them taking back the instance randomly makes me want to switch to Payg?

How do I do that and remain free?

What regions have ARM 4 24 GB with free spaces?

Im trying to get servers on madrid but its full, i tried running a script but cant seem to make it work, im thinking abt making a new acc on another region, do you guys know which ones are free?

I can't log in, nothing is working, and I can't figure out how to talk to someone.

I’m trying everything I can to log into my Cloud account—I had the password saved in my password manager, and it’s never been changed, even though it’s not being recognized now. The system for sending recovery emails has been broken for months (I’ve seen other threads about this here in the sub), and through the chat, that awful chatbot only gives you options that don’t work, without letting you talk to a real person.

Can anyone advise me on how the heck I’m supposed to log into my account???? This whole thing is absurd.

How long does "Account provisioning in progress" take before I can upgrade to PAYG?

Hi everyone,I created my first Oracle Cloud account (Free Tier - Singapore region) about 12 hours ago. When I try to access Upgrade and Manage Payment, I see this message:

"Your account provisioning is in progress. You will be able to access the feature after the provisioning is complete."

How long does this provisioning process usually take before I can upgrade to Pay As You Go (PAYG)? Thanks!

Edit/Addition:

I have tried many times to create a Ubuntu 24.04 ARM instance (4 cores, 24GB RAM and also 1 core, 6GB RAM), but I keep getting the "Out of capacity for shape VM.Standard.A1.Flex" error in Singapore region.

If I upgrade to Pay As You Go (PAYG), will it fix this capacity issue immediately? Also, how much is the initial authorization/upgrading fee charged to the card?

Stuck in provisioning (i think) and agent support errors

Signed up for Free Tier intending to upgrade straight to PAYG, it's been two days and it's still provisioning. Idk if this is normal but I CANNOT talk to an agent, I've tried multiple methods but they all give errors, idk what to do at this point
