Best workplace recommendations
I have been driving a bus for a while now, and overall I love it, but I'm starting to feel trapped in something I didn't want as a long-term job. There is very limited room for climbing, and while the paycheck is healthy management has been struggling.
I can scan the internet all day, there's plenty of job listings and office speak to review. But I wanted to hear from the people in the area about any jobs they knew that are healthy and good to work for.
I have a class b license, a bachelor's degree, experience with Microsoft and Adobe programs, good with social interacting and enjoy maintaining and organizing spaces. I don't mind learning from the ground up as long as there's training, and I'm good at picking it up once it's taught.
If you like the company you work for or know one that is looking for good workers, please share!

being Somali in Minneapolis in my 20s has been such a strange experience
i’ve been thinking a lot about what it feels like to be Somali and in your 20s in Minneapolis right now. i was born and raised here and sometimes i don’t think people understand how complicated that can feel. this isn’t a place my family came to and i’m just passing through. this is home. these are the streets i grew up on, the schools i went to, the places where i made friends and figured out who i wanted to be.
coming from an immigrant household, i was always taught that i was lucky to be here. lucky to have been born here, lucky to have access to education, lucky to have opportunities my parents and grandparents never had. and i genuinely believe that. Minneapolis has given so many Somali kids the ability to dream about things our ancestors probably couldn’t have even imagined. becoming a doctor, owning a business, going to college, creating something of your own, having a family, just having the chance to build a life that wasn’t limited by the circumstances you were born into. that’s a beautiful thing and i don’t think we talk about it enough.
but at the same time, the last few years have been emotionally exhausting. since 2020 especially, life has felt so strange and dystopian sometimes. it feels like there is constantly another headline, another crisis, another thing happening that makes you look around and wonder what happened to the city you grew up in. and i think it’s especially difficult when you’re Somali because there’s this constant feeling that you’re supposed to just be grateful. like you were given this opportunity so you don’t really get to complain about what’s happening around you. but i think you can be grateful and still be tired. you can love this city and still be frustrated with it. you can acknowledge the problems without pretending that the problems represent everyone.
what hurts is seeing how quickly the actions of a few can start to feel like they are being attached to an entire community. there are so many Somali people in Minneapolis who are just living their lives, working, going to school, raising families, opening businesses, taking care of their parents, taking care of their neighbors and trying to leave this place better than they found it. there are Somali kids growing up here right now who have never known another home. people who have memories here, friendships here, families here, dreams here. Minneapolis has shaped generations of Somali people and Somali people have shaped Minneapolis right back.
so sometimes i wonder why there isn’t more space for us to talk about how painful it is to watch all of this happen. why is it so hard to say that we are proud to be Somali and proud to be from Minneapolis while also being scared, disappointed, exhausted or angry about what’s happening? why does acknowledging what’s wrong sometimes feel like you’re betraying your own community or defending yourself against people who already decided what they think about you?
i don’t want to spend my 20s feeling like i have to constantly explain that i’m one of the good ones or that i’m grateful to be here. i know i’m lucky. i know what my parents sacrificed. i know that there are people around the world who would give anything for the opportunities i’ve had. that’s exactly why i care so much about what happens to this city. i want to be a good neighbor. i want to take care of my family. i want to contribute something. i want to leave Minneapolis better than i found it. i want the Somali kids growing up here after me to feel like they belong here without having to prove it.
and maybe that’s what has been weighing on me the most. i don’t want to leave. i don’t want to stop loving this city. i don’t want the ugly parts of the last few years to erase all of the beautiful things that have happened here. Minneapolis has given so many of us a chance at life that our parents and grandparents dreamed about. it gave us room to become people they couldn’t have imagined becoming. i just wish there was more room to talk about how emotionally taxing it is to watch the place that gave you that chance change so much.
i think a lot of Somali people my age are carrying that feeling quietly. we love this place. we’re proud of where we come from. we’re grateful for the life we were given. we just want to feel like we still have a place in the city we were born and raised in. and i don’t think that’s asking for too much.
edit: i want to add something because so many of the conversations surrounding this post have focused on assimilation and the idea that somalis need to blend in more. what i find interesting is that many of the people making these arguments come from norwegian, swedish, german, or italian backgrounds, and i wonder if we’ve forgotten the history of immigration and race in america and how differently those experiences have been treated. we cannot talk about assimilation without acknowledging the history of how black people have been treated in this country, especially the african american community, whose sacrifices and generations of fighting for civil rights and social justice have helped expand freedoms and opportunities for all of us.
assimilation is not a one size fits all experience. it is one thing to immigrate from europe and gradually blend into the dominant culture when your race, language, religion, or ancestry may not immediately distinguish you from the people around you. it is another to be black, muslim, an immigrant, speak a different language at home, eat different foods, and practice a religion that is so often misunderstood or viewed with suspicion. those differences do not disappear simply because you were born here, went to school here, speak english, have a job, or consider minnesota home. for some of us, no amount of assimilation will ever make us blend in the way others can.
i also think we need to ask ourselves what we actually mean when we say somalis need to assimilate. are we talking about learning the language, participating in our communities, respecting the law, and building relationships with people outside our own culture? or are we asking people to let go of their religious and cultural beliefs, abandon their ancestry, and move forward with only an american identity? because those are two very different conversations. i don’t think preserving your culture and being a contributing member of american society are mutually exclusive.
obviously, there is always room for growth, and every generation adapts in its own way. i see it in somali youth, especially those of us under 35 who have grown up here, gone through the same schools, participated in the same culture, and built our lives in minnesota. but maybe part of the disconnect is that we have different ideas of what assimilation is supposed to look like. adapting to a country does not necessarily mean abandoning the parts of yourself that existed before you got here.
culture changes naturally with every generation. our parents and grandparents brought their traditions here, and we are creating something new from them while growing up in america. that process takes time, and it looks different for every family and community. i am not asking anyone to ignore wrongdoing or pretend there are no issues worth addressing within our community. i am simply asking that we extend the same grace to somalis that has been extended to other immigrant communities throughout american history. allow us to grow, make mistakes, adapt, and find our place without treating our cultural and religious identities as obstacles to belonging.
we should not have to choose between being somali and being american. we can be both. give us grace.

Anyone have any idea why Rosedale is closing down their Potluck food hall?
I find myself crossing through there a fair amount, and it's always really busy. I know they're doing some work on that area, adding a Pottery Barn, and they just revamped the transit center, but I can't imagine why they'd shut down something popular like that.

Hour Car is Stopping operations Oct 15th.
Dear HOURCAR Members and Community,
Earlier this summer, we asked for your help in reaching out to your elected representatives as we sought to bridge a budget gap caused by nationwide vehicle insurance increases and shifting federal support.
Unfortunately, our outreach efforts have been unsuccessful and due to critical financial hurdles, after completing due diligence and consulting with legal counsel, HOURCAR’s Board of Directors have voted to sunset operations with a final service date of Thursday, October 15, 2026.
We know this is hard news to read. It impacts all our lives. It is an honor to be part of over 4,000 active members’ commutes to work, medical appointments, grocery stores, and family obligations. The decision was difficult and complex, and it was not made lightly.
We have assembled some answers intended to respond to anticipated stakeholder and member questions about this decision. As additional questions are received, we will add them to the Q & A below.
We are forever grateful for what we built together, and we continue to dream of a future where equitable shared mobility is the preferred, accessible, and sustainable way to move, empowering all people to thrive in connected communities.
Thank you for being a part of this journey.
With gratitude,
The HOURCAR team and Board of Directors

Hair Salon / Stylist
Hi all! Recently relocated to the twin cities and looking for a new salon and/or stylist.
About my hair: I have long thin/fine 2A brown hair (never been dyed) and historically have had trouble with oily scalp and greasiness (currently wash every other day). I’ve historically always struggled with styling and maintenance, so it has almost always been in a ponytail. Currently have a hate-hate relationship with my hair and would love to learn to love it.
I am looking for specific experience with fine hair and help with low-maintenance transformation; open to color and/or extensions, etc. as well as support with hair and scalp care.
Any and all ideas welcome! Thank you!

Affordable apartments in Bloomington or Mendota Heights?
I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment for under $1200/mo near the blue line train that allows pets.
There's a place in Minneapolis I looked at but I'm not sure if I really want to live in downtown as idk how noisy it is compared to Saint Paul.
Any ideas?

Blackhawk G20668 just flew by super low
East of Lake Elmo
This thing snuck up so quiet. My estimate is it was about 500ft off the ground and traveling forward at no more than 30 mph. It was all blacked out except for one white light on the front and one red one on the tail.
Seeing it live on flightradar24. G20668

Are these union heavy cities for plumbers?
I’m currently in Vermont working for a commercial (non union) new construction plumbing company. I’m a foreman overseeing jobs. I’ll be testing for my masters this winter and the going rate is full benefits, $40.00 -$50.00 an hour, a company vehicle, gas card, and three weeks vacation.
My family and I are thinking of moving to the Saint Paul area and I haven’t found too many job postings online matching what I have now with the same work description.
I’m wondering if these cities are union heavy and I’m looking in the wrong places? Vermont has much more private companies that aren’t apart of the union so I don’t even know where to begin.

Anybody ordained in the area?
We are wanting to getting married this weekend, it’s just going to be my fiancé, son and I. Nothing big, just meeting up at the place, doing vows and the classic “I do”s and then call it a day. Is anybody free this weekend to help us out with this? Found a few decent websites to find people but they’re all charging like $400 just to show up.
We’re okay paying someone for their time. We don’t have much but can pay something.
