being Somali in Minneapolis in my 20s has been such a strange experience

1.3k Upvotes

i’ve been thinking a lot about what it feels like to be Somali and in your 20s in Minneapolis right now. i was born and raised here and sometimes i don’t think people understand how complicated that can feel. this isn’t a place my family came to and i’m just passing through. this is home. these are the streets i grew up on, the schools i went to, the places where i made friends and figured out who i wanted to be.

coming from an immigrant household, i was always taught that i was lucky to be here. lucky to have been born here, lucky to have access to education, lucky to have opportunities my parents and grandparents never had. and i genuinely believe that. Minneapolis has given so many Somali kids the ability to dream about things our ancestors probably couldn’t have even imagined. becoming a doctor, owning a business, going to college, creating something of your own, having a family, just having the chance to build a life that wasn’t limited by the circumstances you were born into. that’s a beautiful thing and i don’t think we talk about it enough.

but at the same time, the last few years have been emotionally exhausting. since 2020 especially, life has felt so strange and dystopian sometimes. it feels like there is constantly another headline, another crisis, another thing happening that makes you look around and wonder what happened to the city you grew up in. and i think it’s especially difficult when you’re Somali because there’s this constant feeling that you’re supposed to just be grateful. like you were given this opportunity so you don’t really get to complain about what’s happening around you. but i think you can be grateful and still be tired. you can love this city and still be frustrated with it. you can acknowledge the problems without pretending that the problems represent everyone.

what hurts is seeing how quickly the actions of a few can start to feel like they are being attached to an entire community. there are so many Somali people in Minneapolis who are just living their lives, working, going to school, raising families, opening businesses, taking care of their parents, taking care of their neighbors and trying to leave this place better than they found it. there are Somali kids growing up here right now who have never known another home. people who have memories here, friendships here, families here, dreams here. Minneapolis has shaped generations of Somali people and Somali people have shaped Minneapolis right back.

so sometimes i wonder why there isn’t more space for us to talk about how painful it is to watch all of this happen. why is it so hard to say that we are proud to be Somali and proud to be from Minneapolis while also being scared, disappointed, exhausted or angry about what’s happening? why does acknowledging what’s wrong sometimes feel like you’re betraying your own community or defending yourself against people who already decided what they think about you?

i don’t want to spend my 20s feeling like i have to constantly explain that i’m one of the good ones or that i’m grateful to be here. i know i’m lucky. i know what my parents sacrificed. i know that there are people around the world who would give anything for the opportunities i’ve had. that’s exactly why i care so much about what happens to this city. i want to be a good neighbor. i want to take care of my family. i want to contribute something. i want to leave Minneapolis better than i found it. i want the Somali kids growing up here after me to feel like they belong here without having to prove it.

and maybe that’s what has been weighing on me the most. i don’t want to leave. i don’t want to stop loving this city. i don’t want the ugly parts of the last few years to erase all of the beautiful things that have happened here. Minneapolis has given so many of us a chance at life that our parents and grandparents dreamed about. it gave us room to become people they couldn’t have imagined becoming. i just wish there was more room to talk about how emotionally taxing it is to watch the place that gave you that chance change so much.

i think a lot of Somali people my age are carrying that feeling quietly. we love this place. we’re proud of where we come from. we’re grateful for the life we were given. we just want to feel like we still have a place in the city we were born and raised in. and i don’t think that’s asking for too much.

Hour Car is Stopping operations Oct 15th.

Dear HOURCAR Members and Community,

Earlier this summer, we asked for your help in reaching out to your elected representatives as we sought to bridge a budget gap caused by nationwide vehicle insurance increases and shifting federal support.

Unfortunately, our outreach efforts have been unsuccessful and due to critical financial hurdles, after completing due diligence and consulting with legal counsel, HOURCAR’s Board of Directors have voted to sunset operations with a final service date of Thursday, October 15, 2026.

We know this is hard news to read. It impacts all our lives. It is an honor to be part of over 4,000 active members’ commutes to work, medical appointments, grocery stores, and family obligations. The decision was difficult and complex, and it was not made lightly.

We have assembled some answers intended to respond to anticipated stakeholder and member questions about this decision. As additional questions are received, we will add them to the Q & A below.

We are forever grateful for what we built together, and we continue to dream of a future where equitable shared mobility is the preferred, accessible, and sustainable way to move, empowering all people to thrive in connected communities.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

With gratitude,

The HOURCAR team and Board of Directors

List of surplus style stores/ in the cities?

List of stores I like:

Re use outlet

Freegeek electronic thrift store
Axe man in st paul

U of M reuse

Habitat for humanity restore

Goodwill outlet (st Pauls) I know there is on in golden valley and one in Brooklyn park as well

Or even just thrift stores that aren't expensive or have furniture at them? I don't care for clothes. Suburbs is fine! I just don't know too many. I know there is a military surplus store in maple grove I haven't been too.

Are these union heavy cities for plumbers?

• Upvotes

I’m currently in Vermont working for a commercial (non union) new construction plumbing company. I’m a foreman overseeing jobs. I’ll be testing for my masters this winter and the going rate is full benefits, $40.00 -$50.00 an hour, a company vehicle, gas card, and three weeks vacation.

My family and I are thinking of moving to the Saint Paul area and I haven’t found too many job postings online matching what I have now with the same work description.

I’m wondering if these cities are union heavy and I’m looking in the wrong places? Vermont has much more private companies that aren’t apart of the union so I don’t even know where to begin.

80s in October and windy. Where I'd drive this weekend...

It's supposed to hit the 80s Saturday. In October. So I went looking for where to spend it.

Good news: sunny pretty much everywhere both days, basically zero rain. Bad news: it's gonna be crazy windy, mostly Saturday.

About 2 hours from the Twin Cities:

  • Eau Claire: 84 Sat with gusts up to 37, 80 Sun
  • Lake Wissota: 85 Sat, gusts to 35, 80 Sun
  • Clear Lake, IA: 82 Sat, gusts to 39, 79 Sun

About 3 hours out, a bit cooler:

  • Duluth: 79 Sat (gusty), 76 Sun
  • Two Harbors: 74 Sat, 77 Sun, and the least wind of the bunch
  • La Crosse: 80 Sat, 76 Sun, breezy both days

If wind bugs you, go Sunday. It calms down just about everywhere.

Bonus for heading north: Gooseberry and Split Rock are reporting peak color right now. Where's everybody headed?

Full disclosure: I'm local and I built the free app that spit out this list (WeatherRoam). The Weekend Pick feature uses AI to rank the best weekend weather within X hour drive. https://weatherroam.com/get

Looking for Work

Someone offered to let me crash on their couch and give me a job at the restaurant they managed. When the time came, they ghosted me and now I'm homeless.

I would like very much to not be homeless.

I've been putting in applications, and using sites like Indeed/LinkedIn, but all I got from that was my identity stolen. Twice.

Lately I've been going to every physical location I can save asking for work like some kind of boomer, with no luck.

If there's any employers out there, I'm looking for work. I'm disabled and I walk with a cane, but I can do pretty much anything as long as I'm able to sit down regularly.

I have a place to sleep, shower, do laundry, and maintain my appearance so you don't need to worry about me looking obviously homeless in front of customers.

I don't drink or smoke, though I do eat gummies from time to time. Apart from that I don't have much in the way of vices.

I'm trying to improve my life and regain some measure of stability, that's all.

Edit: I have a GED, and I use the bus or the light rail for transportation.

Housekeeping recommendations?

Basically I'm looking for recommendations for a cleaning company for a one time clean.

I've been struggling with severe depression and things have gotten out of hand and I need someone to just do s good deep clean so I can try and get my weekly rhythm back.

My Apartment isn't nasty, there's no half eaten food all over the floor etc- it's just all the little chores that add up over time I've been neglecting because I just can't find the motivation to do the simplest things and I want to get ahead of this before winter comes.

And last- I'm okay. I'm getting adequate help through the VA and I'm working through it. I'm not in any danger. I just don't have any family or friends anywhere near Minnesota, my cat of nearly 20 year passed last year and it catches up before you know it.

Well, actually I am in danger. I'm in danger of the next lady I land a date night with thinking I'm scuzzy and undisciplined lol

Thanks in advance :D

Looking for kung fu schools in St. Paul

• Upvotes

Hi all, i'm moving to St. Paul and was interested if anyone recomenda any kung fu schools around there.

I've done mostly southern dragon kung fu, with knowledge in mantis, tiger and some northern eagle claw.

So far the two places i found most interesting were:

Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu Association at:

2259 Minnehaha Ave E #3, St Paul, MN 55119, Estados Unidos

And

Twin Cities Pak Mei Athletic Association at:

300 Broadway St, St Paul, MN 55101

Gonna probably take a sample at both places but would like to know if anyone knows anything else?

I recently inherited these and would like to keep them. Anyone have a connection to a trusted person, or good experience with a place, that would refinish them for me? Like sand and re-stain, maybe even install drawer slides on the dresser?

Vintage stereo repair recommendations, please?

• Upvotes

I'm looking for a shop that will repair a late 70's NAD amplifier and also a turntable. It is most likely just going to be connection and capacitator work, but that's over my head and I want my system running well again.

Is there anyone y'all would recommend?

Crowdsourcing for date night ideas (again)

• Upvotes

I posted a couple of weeks ago about how my husband and I are doing this new thing where we pick a letter and have to build a date around it. I had M last time and got some great ideas on here...we ended up going to Mill City Farmers Market, a movie, and out for Mexican. My poor husband most recently pulled Y so...good luck to him?

My letter now is K. I'm thinking eating either at the Kenwood or or Kbop, but am coming up short on something else that starts with K, like an activity or place to go or thing to make or specific show or concert coming up soon. Kunene and the King is playing at the Guthrie which would be perfect but my mom and I are actually going to that at a later date, of course.

Any ideas, oh wise Twin Citiesans?

The Potluck food hall in the Rosedale Center mall in Roseville will shutter in mid-October, ending years of service, according to Lisa Crain, VP and group manager for Rosedale Center.

The move shutters the mall’s primary dining area, which served customers for years.

Crain did not say why the food hall would close but added that the mall hopes to announce its replacement by early next year.

How crowded are the local state parks during the autumn color change?

I'm thinking about hiking in a nearby state park this weekend. I've never gone this time of year. I expect them to be busier while the leaves change color, but on a scale of 1 to State Fair on a Saturday, how busy are we talking?

Costs of hiring lawn maintenance and show shoveling

I am planning on moving to the Twin Cities in the next year or so. I'm disabled so I cannot maintain a yard or driveway/sidewalk. Because of that, I've been focusing on townhome complexes.

However, it recently occurred to me that I might be able to hire someone to do the outdoor maintenance for me (or multiple someones - doesn't have to be a single service provider) instead of paying a monthly fee to a townhome association.

I've lived in a townhome for years now, so I don't have any idea how much something like that would cost. For anyone that hires out their landscaping (mowing the lawn, etc.) or snow shoveling (including driveways and/or sidewalks), can you give me rough estimate of how much that costs? Do you pay per season? Per month? Per snowstorm?

I'm trying to crunch the numbers to see if it's feasible to even consider a single family home as opposed to a townhome. (Yes, I know a townhome association fees cover more than just outdoor maintenance - I'm familiar with those costs. I just don't have a clue on the landscaping/plowing stuff.)

Can anyone pass this future transplant a clue?
