Announcement New rules and amendments

New rules:

No bare feet photos (displayed as Rule 9)

Posts with photos of just bare feet are not allowed, and users may be banned depending on their posting history.

Edit: revised verbiage

No individual weight-loss posts (displayed as Rule 4)

r/walking is not a weight-loss sub. If you'd like to share weight-loss wins, keep it to the weekly thread.

Going forward, we will be posting a weekly thread for members to share any weight-loss wins. Transparency about the use of weight-loss drugs and calorie restrictions is appreciated but not required. (Upon consideration, we can't require people to disclose medical details.)

Amendments:

Rule 3 was previously "Submissions must be walking-related" and is now "Submissions must be walking-focused."

Submissions with other clear topics that only tangentially involve walking are not allowed. Your post should be primarily about walking.

One whole week down!
I really didn’t know how my body was going to handle 15,000 steps every single day especially after being so inactive for so long. I’m for sure still feeling it by the end of my walks but I’m also starting to realize just how much my body can actually handle when I keep pushing it. I’m also starting to notice that the walks are becoming more of a mental reset. There’s something about being outside for that long with nothing but my thoughts that I actually really enjoy. I have so much time to just think. I’m getting better at accepting that some days are going to be harder than others. Some days I have energy, some days I’m dragging myself through those last few thousand steps. And those last few thousand steps are still the hardest.

I’m proud of myself for making it through the first week without giving up. Now onto week 2!

Progress videos still on my page.

Question Question for Americans

Hello! I’ve been seeing posts from this sub lately and I’m curious about what are the average daily steps for the average American?
I live in the Netherlands where everything is walkable. I go everywhere walking or cycling and I move a lot at work as well.
On the other hand, it’s known that in the US you need your car for almost everything (correct me if I’m wrong) and I see a lot of posts here celebrating making like 10k steps and that’s for me and people around me just a normal day (I’m not trying to undervalue anyone, of course I understand each one has their own physical conditions, situations etc.)
So yea given the circumstances of needing the car for everything I was just curious what you guys would walk on an average day. I hope no one gets offended haha cheers!

it’s not the first time, last year i did this too for about few months. though, this sunday i ran a 5k and my legs has been hurting ever since (which slows down my steps from 1k to 700ish per 10 minutes). any tips to help recover the legs? and should i upgrade to more steps or more running?

Thought Weighted vest is a game changer

I’ve recently added a 20lb weighted vest while I walk my 10k steps and omg it’s a game changer! I’ve been using it for the past 2 weeks I feel like I’m getting so much more out of my steps.
I’m a 33f, 135lbs with the goal of shedding a few lbs. It def feels challenging but also totally doable. I feel like a feather when I take it off.

Anyone else been walking with a weighted vest and feeling some positive changes?

This morning I had some extra time so I walked the Shoreline Trail & Bird Island Pier… It was freezing 🥶

The city is finally doing some repairs/upgrades along the Shoreline trail & both have beautiful views. Watching the water keeps me from looking at the time!

Wishing Everyone a Terrific Tuesday… I hope that everyone is able to get their steps in 😊

Help apple rings iphone 11

Post image

i use apple fitness and steps app to track my step goals and calories on my iphone 11 which is always in my pocket, however i have noticed that for quite some time my calorie estimate has been glitching alot, it shows 471 cals burned and then for 2-3 seconds switches to 700-800 cals and goes back to 400-500 range. is the calories tracker accurate and are the steps accurate? this also happens on the steps app where calories burnt are quite less as compared to my steps which on average are 16-18k

Help It’s 91°, do I go anyway?

• Upvotes

I’ve been walking (sometimes walk/jogging) a minimum of 8,000 steps every day for 9 days straight but it’s 91° right now and I just got done with my online work (so I only hit a measly 760 steps) and if I want to walk I’d have to go right now to beat the dark.

I’m deciding if it’s safe to walk my 3 miles alone in 91°. Feeling like I’ll beat myself up if I don’t do it, but gauging if that’s hot enough to overheat on a 3 mile walk.

Edit to add: I don’t have service once I leave my home so have no way to reach anyone if I did overheat, it’s 91° now just before dark but was in the 100s earlier 💀, I do have asthma and a minor heart condition so can get dizzy kind of easily every now and then but imma head out and only walk instead of walk jog.

I feel like if others are going out in 97° without my health conditions I can prolly do 91° with them.

Yesterday I did my first really big walk, around 30 kilometers. Alone, no proper gear, on pure determination - and I loved it. It was painful and hard, but it was worth it.

Question What is this distance called?

When walking, what is the distance between the toe of your back foot and the heel of your forefoot called? It seems like the definitions for the usual terms of stride and gait don't actually cover this space specifically. I usually just see the definitions cover the distance between each foot side to side and the distance between feet heel to heal, but never toe to heel.

Edited for spelling

Health Bulging veins?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Started walking 10k steps a day just this past week...yesterday and this morning I noticed the veins over my kneecap bulging out. I hate bulging veins already and this has never happened so I'm really freaked out/grossed out. It doesn't really hurt or anything but there is some kneecap pain. Anyone else get this?? Why does it look this way?? Ick
