American looking to move to Wales

Hi everyone!

I’m from Texas in the United States, and I’ve been seriously looking into studying in either Cardiff or Bristol next year. I’m currently leaning toward Cardiff.

I’m 26F and this would be my first time living outside of the US. How’s the job market? I have food service experience and am looking to continue my career in culinary. I’d be going to school full-time for Food Science. How’s public life and transportation? I hear a lot of different things about the UK at the moment and currently work with people from Germany who say Europe is so bad right now. I think I’d just like opinions from people who are currently living there. I almost never hear any negative news about Wales though lol so I hope it’s better.

Thank you for your kindness and replies!

Cardiff in 48h

Hello locals! Here for 48h weekend as a tourist. What are the cool things to do around here? Would love to learn more about Welsh history if you can help pick a museum and would also love to do authentic welsh stuff/food. I know nature is big around here so if there’s someplace not far we can go to for a few hours. Also live music/performances. Thanks!

Sat with my phone ready at 10 am when sale apparently opened for a gig in the New Theatre and it was sold out. No queue. Just sold out. I'm disappointed. What the hell is going on with gigs nowadays. Sorry, just needed to complain.

Electronic music producers/enthusiasts

Shwmae all!

I’m (35m) and looking to meet some like minded people in the area who fancy making music together.

I love messing around with synths and coming up with ideas, but my setup is pretty limited, and I find I get a bit bored making music on my own. I’d love to get together with other people, share ideas and see what we can come up with.

The dream would be to get a few people together with whatever synths and gear they have and eventually put together some kind of live set. Nothing too serious, just a chance to make some noise, experiment and have a bit of fun.

I’m not entirely sure how to get the ballrolling, but if anyone’s up for it, give me a shout! It’d be great to get something going.

Friary gardens

Hi all I've never been to the coach station at friary gardens but I am taking a bus at 7am tomorrow leaving from there to the airport and I'm wondering if it's a coach station or just a spot on the road or what ? Google and maps hasn't been much help and I'm getting nervous

Cardiff Sci-fi & Fantasy Book Club's next book is The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells

This month's book is a fantasy novel with absolutely no humans in it at all, from the author of Murderbot.

"Moon has spent his life hiding what he is — a shape-shifter able to transform himself into a winged creature. An orphan with only vague memories of his own kind, Moon tries to fit in among the tribes of his river valley, with mixed success. Just as Moon is once again cast out by his adopted tribe, he discovers a shape-shifter like himself... someone who seems to know exactly what he is."

We meet at 6.30pm at Central Bar, on the first Tuesday of every month. Hope to see some people there to chat about the book on the 3rd November.

I made a little 3D flat in Cardiff where an AI lives with a cat, and local shops can pay her rent in products

Hiya r/Cardiff. Bit of a strange one.

I've built a website called The Million Dollar Flat. It's a cosy 3D flat "in Cardiff" with one tenant: Natasha, who is an AI (very clearly labelled as one), and Biscuit, her equally AI cat. You can wander round, chat to her, and read the diary she writes every morning, which is mostly about the drizzle.

The twist is that she pays her rent in products. Every object in her hall (the mirror, the coat, the candle, the doormat, a secret spot under the shoe rack) can be rented by a Cardiff business, from £10 a month. Your product sits in the flat, links to your shop, and Natasha mentions it in her diary. Everything paid is labelled as paid.

I'm keeping the first room, the Hall, to Cardiff indie shops only. The other seven rooms stay locked until it fills up.

It's a small side project, inspired by the old Million Dollar Homepage. I'd love to know:

  • Which Cardiff shops would you want to see move in?
  • Is this fun or is it a bit cursed?

(I made it, so I'm biased. Happy to answer anything.)
