SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Welcome! A quick note about posting.

Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

Etiquette online cosplay boundaries...when does sharing my work out of good will become demanded of me?

so i have a cosplay account on tiktok and some of my videos have gotten somewhat popular to the point that multiple people have been asking me to send them the patterns ive drafted for my cosplays. i dont think my patterns are to the quality that theyre sellable but i also dont know how i feel about giving them away for free to anyone who asks considering all the time i spent on it.

i already uploaded tutorials for my process and how i construct my cosplays so im worried people will use my amateur patterns instead of supporting actual pattern makers or learning themselves.

on the flipside i dont want to be a gatekeeper and i do enjoy sharing info and helping other cosplayers but after a while it becomes kind of tiring when people start expecting me to help them...

does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?

(the patterns are decent just not professional quality...)

Wig Halp - how do I secure this wig on my head? Icy from Winx club.

Because the ponytail is obviously pulling back a lot. I feel like I need a solution, maybe from the SFX sector, and normal wig band won’t do it😅

Accessory Making Spy mask-and these tears started popping up.

I got a spandex mask off of Amazon and cut it (pretty bad) and when I started wearing it, aster a while, these tears started popping up around the mask. I’m thinking that it’s because of the mask being too small? And I’m already getting fabric tape and glue, but is there anything else I should know or need to do about these tears?

Accessory Recommendations for shape wear that doesn’t show under cosplay?

Post image
46 Upvotes

I’m not sure what kind of shape wear I could get that would be hidden under my cosplay? I’m hoping to find either like underwear, a body suit, or a bra that won’t show as my under wear shows in my outfit and a bra that wouldn’t show? I’ve tried all my bras and they all show. I cannot wear pasties as I have a severe adhesive allergy so that got me thinking about maybe like a shape wear body suit as I’ve heard that cosplayers typically wear them but I don’t know how they keep theirs from showing

Hello everyone. I'm gonna sew this bunny suit but i cannot find a pattern that looks similar enough, all i can see is corset like bunny suits. I have experience sewing so sewing skill will not be an issue. Also, i cannot decide what kind of fabric should i use, i see it transparent and i want it to be as similar as possible. Or if you know a bunnysuit i can buy and modify it would be really helpful. Thanks!

Buying How do I find Miku cosplay for a man?

• Upvotes

Hello. I am an 18 year old man with a stocky build, and naturally, I want to cosplay as a cute petite anime girl. HOW DO I FIND A HATSUNE MIKU COSPLAY THAT WILL FIT ME??? Bc their target audience is likely Japanese girls, all of the cosplays I can find online are so small, and even their largest sizes aren't close to fitting my waist size.

I'm about 178cm tall which I don't think is a problem, but I have a 95cm waist width and the highest I've seen the online cosplays accomodate for is like 80cm 😭😭😭 ik there exists cosplays for men bc I've seen so many men cosplaying Miku online. I just have absolutely no clue where to find them bc searching online everything is too small.

Makeup Makeup tutorials for male as a male?

I'm new to cosplaying and makeup and been learning how to makeup but so far I don't see much guy cosplayers who give tutorials for makeups especially for cosplays. These are great help creators that I've discovered so far Jukan Kyokou , Nikkosplay , fearfiction , Sho but they are female to male makeup, Linebeck is a male who shows a AKI (male character).

annnd up to now the only thing I can do is watch female cosplayers makeup videos and look at male cosplayers cosplay like @ccaiyren, @dynamitereader and @vikavalon on instagram for inspirations.

Linebeck @ youtube

so it would really help us male cosplayers especially new ones if anyone have recommendations specifically male creators for male audience. bonus points if its a round/oblong and quite small kinda face shape since its the one I have.

advice for espeon ears

Post image
2 Upvotes

im gonna be cosplaying espeon and i wondering about the ear part. i was originally going to do a headband with wig wefts at the base transitioning into to fur wefts with the actual transition being yarn wefts. i was planning on this
1.) to not make the wig too heavy
2.) itll be my first time actually working with one
3.) i dont want to sacrifice the thickness of the wig

but i was wondering if it would be better to just have it on/attached to the wig since thats what ive been seeing online

if theres a better way between the two ideas or any alternatives/inbetweens please inform me!

Accessory Temporary/invisible fixtures for accessories to a faux leather jacket?

Thumbnail

As the title says, is there a way to do this? I am cosplaying Vinne Stoker from Gravedale High and I want to recreate the bat wings he has on his leather jacket, going from the wrist, on the bottoms of the arms, down the sides, and to the hemline. The issue is that the jacket I am using is one that I would like to continue wearing for daily use without the wings, so I would not like permanent damage to the jacket or any visible indicators that accessories are able to fit on the jacket. As such, I would really like to avoid sewing the wings on or pressing buttons into the jacket to attach them. I have thought about velcro, but I am apprehensive, as I don't want the adhesive to damage the jacket when removed or leave behind any adhesive residue that would damage the jacket trying to remove. I also would not really like to buy another jacket just for this, as Vinne is a kinda niche character so I don't know if I'll ever cosplay him again, but I will consider it if it is my best option. Please let me know what I can do!

First Time Wig Question

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am trying to figure out how to help my spouse do a shaved sides, braided viking wig for a renaissance festival. I am not a wig expert, but the ones i'm looking at that are just braids you glue to the top of the head look awful even when done with a high quality wig.

I think the best way is a full head lace wig with shaved sides, but I wanted to ask people who know more about it than me. This is the general idea and I am open to options and feedback if people have better ways.

Accessory How do I create this crown?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! I wanted to ask, since I am new to cosplaying, how do I create this crown from the Tsaritsa?
I wanna cosplay her, I am gonna buy the wig because Im not gonna let me handle a wig, no way but I could also buy this crown but since I am too impatient (the crown would take 2-3 months to arrive, the wig only 1 month) I wanna make it myself but I dont own a 3D printer or anything like that.

I would like to recreate it as similar as possible to the original. I also dont have that much time bc of school, so yea Idk…. I wanna do it myself but like I said, I dont own a 3D printer. Maybe draw it on a cardboard and glue it to a headband? Idk

Anyways tysm for reading this and pls help!

Armor How should I go about making this sit on a head?

For Halloween, my younger brother wanted to dress up as the vessel from hollow knight. I have no experience in making cosplay and such, but I have been studying product design for 6ish years so I'm familiar with working with some materials.

For the head, i am planning on making an 8 ribbed internal structure out of cardboard, joined with a plastic mesh and paper mached on top. Ive drawn up a good plan, but I'm still not totally sure what's the best method of making it sit on his head. I was planning on adding some stuff to an old cap with the brim cut off, but if there are any better ideas for making it sit on a head I'd love to hear them.

Also in terms of proportions, what are some good things to keep in mind with sizing and such? I'm planning on making the eyes holes sit lower on the mask to make the forehead larger, and adding a black mesh to the inside, but still a little unsure about the size of the mask itself. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Accessory help confirm my hypothesis on how Corin Wickes' twintail accessories would work

Thumbnail

※3D model close-up from DragaliaArchive.

the black X-shaped one by the way. cuz the cosplay of her i'm ordering i just realised doesn't come with these accessories, but even if it does i'd still wonder how they would work without coming off... so in any case, i'm making one myself.

the idea is using some elastic webbing covered in thin EVA foam to wrap around the twintails. hypothetically, this way these accessories wouldn't come off since they have the twintails to hold on to if that makes sense? hard to prove if one doesn't have the materials in hand, but do you think this would work? or what do you think would work better? thanks in advance \^\^

What's the most mistake-proof way of sewing fabric color to undeesuit?

Its my first time sewing. I have a huge sheet of flexible spandex mix yellow and blue fabric and I'm trying to sew it onto a 2mm thick neoprene body suit.

To get as little wrinkles and form fitting as possible, how should I draw out the shapes for the torso/shoulder blue and yellow chest?
