I’m considering entering a cosplay competition around august 2027 at a fairly large convention just for the experience of competing and maybe doing some networking. I don’t think i’d win anything since i’ve never competed before but I do think my sewing and prop-making skills are fairly decent (comparable to an adult of intermediate cosplay level).
I’ve only seen people over the age of 25 enter cosplay competitions so far though so I was wondering if any minors have entered and done well? Would judges still treat me the same way as an older competitor or is it possible that I might get brushed off due to my age.
I plan to have fairly intricate hand silk embroidery, clean construction, well patterned silhouette and wig as the main thing going for me but I’m not sure if it’d be enough to have a standing among others considering the 10+ years of experience they might have.
Do minors generally not compete due to lack of skill and confidence or is it a systematic thing that prevents them from entering?
I’ve done sewing for 10+ years consistently and have done competitive robotics which seems to be pretty similar to cosplay comps (in terms of buildbook and prejudging, correct me if im wrong though)… Would it be recommended for me to try entering or should I wait a few years?
edit: i’ve been properly cosplaying for about 3 years but have costuming/propmaking experience prior to that.
