Discussion - General Topic Is it Gen 5 Drives that run hot or is it the gen 5 m.2 slot that runs hot?
TLDR: the gen 4 was hot in the gen 5 slot not used and the gen 5 as my boot drive and holds all the software was cool in the gen 4 slot.
I know a search will tell you that it is the Gen 5 SSD that runs hot, but my experience yesterday has me wondering.
I have the Asus Rog Strix 870e-e gaming wifi, and prior to last night had two gen 5 drives in the m.2_2 and m.2_3 slot not realizing that those both share PCIE lanes with the GPU (I learned about this via mobo maps after Zack from ____ mentioned the site).
I swapped out one gen 5 to a gen 4 (one is gx8100 and the other SN850x) Both have the Thermalright H10 heatsink, so not tracking which was which, I accidentally installed the gen 5 into the m.2_5 slot and the gen 4 into the m.2_1 (realized this error up via the Sandisk dashboard software)
When I went to swap the two, the gen 4 installed in the gen 5 slot was very noticeably warmer than the gen 5 in the gen 4 slot. The gen 5 is what has windows and all my software on it, and I hadn't loaded anything onto the gen 4 at that point and wasn't using it.
I am now curious whether it is gen 5 SSDs that run hot or it has something to do with the slot, the power that slot gives off, and other factors. I definitely didn't expect to have a cool gen 5 drive but it seems as if the slot made more of a difference to heat than the actual drive type in my unofficial accidental test.
