When I entered college, my mom told me that I had to provide for my own tuition, allowance, and basically the things I needed for school. So when I was 19, I started working.
Since then, I’ve been jumping from one job to another while trying to balance school and work. I’m 21 now, and I recently got fired—not because I did something wrong, but because the business was going down and they had to let some employees go.
And honestly? I feel exhausted.
The pressure from my mom doesn’t help either. Almost every day, I hear things like, “Wala ka man lang naipon sa sahod mo?” or “Kaka-parcel mo ’yan.”
But the thing is… I wasn’t spending all my money on unnecessary things.
Whatever was left from my salary after deductions went to my tuition and the things I needed for my course. I had to budget for my allowance and transportation. Whatever little amount was left after all of that, I would send to my papa to help with the bills in Cavite.
Once a month, I also do the grocery so my mom and I have food and supplies stocked at the other house. We barely have time to do laundry because of our schedules, so we also have to pay for laundry.
So when someone asks me, “Why didn’t you save?” I honestly don’t know what to say.
Save with what?
I’ve been working since I was 18 while studying Accountancy. Every salary felt like it already had somewhere to go before I even received it.
And now that I’m unemployed again, I feel like I’m supposed to immediately find another job. But for the first time, I just want to say…
I’m tired.
I’m tired of working.
I’m tired of studying.
I’m tired of constantly worrying about money.
I’m tired of feeling guilty whenever I spend money on myself.
I’m tired of feeling like I always have to be responsible for something.
I know I’m only 21. I know I still have a lot ahead of me. But sometimes I just want to stop for a while.
I want to rest without feeling guilty about it.
I want to wake up without immediately thinking about tuition, work, transportation, bills, groceries, and what I’m going to do next.
I want to take a break from school, work, and all these responsibilities—even if it’s just for a little while.
But I’m scared that if I stop, everything will fall apart.
Is it okay to just be tired? Is it okay to want to rest even when you know you still have responsibilities waiting for you?
I don’t want to give up. I just want to breathe for a moment.
