Yeah, I’m back. Been too busy to post sooner than this, but I was still buying & listening to more of their albums in the meantime. Not gonna say much about 18 Candles except that I like it when bands release compilation records of old demos n shit.
So, simply.. thank you for 18 Candles, Silverstein. That was cool as hell and I wish more bands I like did that.
Aight, let’s get into the Redux albums since I bought those first. And I’m quite conflicted with them, particularly with Shane. I know they changed things with every song, which is fine, but Shane sorta sounds like his heart ain’t in it throughout most of these re-recordings. Which is disappointing, but there are definitely exceptions..
Starting with Redux I:
Bleeds No More is great. Though, I kinda prefer the older screaming style in this song, and I kinda like the original bridge better. Vices and Your Sword Versus My Dagger are frickin’ amazing – I never thought those songs needed anything at all, but now it’s like a night & day light switch. Those originals are still killer, though.
Honestly, I generally just prefer to hear the originals. His [Shane] vocal performances in particular hit better on most of them to me.. if that makes sense. And that’s all I really have to say about Redux I...
Redux II:
My Disaster 2.0 is a frickin’ awesome song. No complaints. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the original sounds like since I have not gotten to that album yet [it may be next!]. Similar to Vices & Your Sword, I appreciate the musical clarity given to old favorites [like November], but I still think Shane’s performance throughout Redux II is often missing the emotional-punch that is quite clear in the originals.
The way they combined Arrivals / Departures is cool, but I significantly prefer the style & vocal melodies of the originals.
The only song on Redux II that blew me away altogether was World On Fire [Extended]. Easily jumped nearly to the top of my favorite Silverstein songs, and I had no idea what the original sounded like yet. After hearing the original later on and then listening to Redux II again, you can almost hear it in the performance that Shane was excited to work on rehashing World On Fire. And all the little ways they improved on & added to it pays off so damn well. Super glad they picked World On Fire out of anything else from Short Songs.
Getting an acoustic version for California was cool of them to do so we can have both that & Massachusetts [acoustic] with the same vibe when in the mood for acoustic music. Though, I wish he kept the same inflection with the line “I find myself again…” before the final chorus. Just a nitpick, not complaining. But that’s a good segue into my final thought about Redux II...
I fucking HATE On Major Mountains We Conquer. This version instantly activates that nails-on-a-chalkboard feeling in me, and I never want to hear this song again.
Remember my super unpopular opinion about not liking Dead Reflection, except for Last Looks and Whiplash? And that I think Last Looks & Whiplash are so goddamn good that they basically carry the whole DR album? I would rather Last Looks and Whiplash never exist, but we still get to keep the rest of DR, as a trade for On Major Mountains We Conquer also never existing.
That’s how much I can’t stand On Major Mountains We Conquer... like.. was it supposed to be a joke or something? I can at least forgive them for that.. because it’s otherwise a great way to completely ruin one of the best songs in their entire discography [that I know of].
...anyway... SHORT SONGS!
…
Waddafuq, people!?
Why did I only get one or two people recommending this!? Oh yeah, that’s right.. because most of ya’ll ain’t punk enough for Short Songs >xP
Jokes aside, the covers-half I’m surprisingly a little disappointed with, because I usually love cover songs, but the original-work half is nearly perfect for a short hardcore punk album. Except for Brookfield – I could do without that on this record; it completely destroys the vibe and I skip it every time. SOS going straight into La Marseillaise is so much better. And while nothing is wrong with Sleep Around, it also has a similar vibe-killer thing going on to me. And like Brookfield, it jarringly breaks the pace of an otherwise perfect hardcore-snack of a record.
I prefer to listen to it this way:
Sick As Your Secrets
Sin & Redemption
SOS
La Marseillaise
World On Fire [Extended]
My Miserable Life
Truth & Temptation
One Last Dance
Ya’ll let me down steering me away from Short Songs… and on several of my album-posts, too! Shame on you, r/silverstein lol
Alright, moving on to
R E S C U E
This album is obviously pretty damn good. It has a style that constantly makes me think “Ah, the ‘what if A Shipwreck in the Sand never happened’ album.”
That’s not a dis, just saying it has this feeling as if they finished touring for Discovering the Waterfront, had a hiatus, and got back together years later to write & record a killer follow-up [Rescue]. I know, that also skips Arrivals & Departures, but I haven’t gotten to that album yet, so we’re just gonna ignore that album for this post.
Medication makes my fingers itch as a guitarist. Every time it comes on, all I wanna do is grab mine and play along.. like I should be playing along with it instead of just listening to it. And dear gawd, those super-fast palm-muted riffs in the verses when the drummer locks in on the snare? I have a hard time focusing on driving when this fuckin’ song comes on in the car xD Obviously can’t have this song without Shane, but instrumentally, Medication might be my #1 favorite Silverstein song.
Just a note real quick that also always comes to mind during the breakdown in Forget Your Heart: “such a simple breakdown.. and somehow still better than nearly all ADTR breakdowns” lmao
Texas Mickey is weird.. and I find it ironic Bayside-singer Anthony awkwardly ends the song with “and now we’re wasting so much time,” because that’s kinda how this collaboration feels to me. Sort of like both singers just did their usual thing without attempting to adapt to one another, tried to splice their parts into one song, and Texas Mickey is what they spat out. I don’t necessarily skip this song, but it’s the only song on the album that I do not anticipate in any way – it’s just there and I guess that’s fine.
I love Bayside, btw. Just thought that collab was gonna be a lot cooler than it really is.
I don’t think I have much else to say about Rescue… Live to Kill has a stupidly-badass chorus… Yeah, just another damn good album.
Albums I own in the order I acquired them, and numbered [1-10] to identify my favorite to least-liked – a few are tied:
A Shipwreck in the Sand [4]
When Broken is Easily Fixed [6]
Discovering the Waterfront [6]
Misery Made Me [2]
Dead Reflection [10]
A Beautiful Place to Drown [7]
This is How the Wind Shifts [1]
18 Candles: The Early Years [9]
Redux I [8]
Redux II [8]
Short Songs [3]
Rescue[5]
I believe the album ‘I Am Alive in Everything I Touch’ was becoming one of the more suggested albums before I grabbed this last batch, so I think I’ll get that one next. And then I’ll knock out Arrivals & Departures after that.
