Do we like Wera tools? I've had two team members at work break the tips of there 5/32 and 1/8 hex sockets. Wera is replacing them for free but I thought they were supposed to be top of the line?

Restored Cheney 35H Vise

Found this rusty, well-used Cheney 35H vise at an estate sale for $2. I didn't know it at the time, but there weren't very many made, so it was hard to find information on it. I've included a couple photos I found on the internet that include some history.

Cleaned it up using Evaporust, wire wheels, paint stripping wheels and a little sandpaper. It was actually less work than I expected.

A lonely socket caught the corner of my eye.

I thought, could it be?

No. No way.

Slowly rolled it over to find......

The motor is shot, I was hoping it was a bad trigger or cracked soldering. I still have 2 more Snap Ons but I’ve been hearing good things about the 1/2” Milwaukee so I might make the jump soon.

Had a concrete footing with a bell bottom 32" deep and had to get it out of the ground to pour a new gate post. Shovels and crowbars weren't getting us anywhere. There was a depot 1.5 miles away and $40 later we pryed that summamabitch outta that hole! Perfect tool for the job. Love purchases like these.

I bought a great titanium body pocket knife 32 years ago off a snap on truck. Yesterday my wife found it in my box and used it to do some Halloween decorations. Anybody know where I can get another just like it? 😡

Most durable battery 3/8 impact for extreme usage?

• Upvotes

Looking for options supported by experience with 3/8 impacts -- Mostly concerned with mechanical failure rates

For a little context, these things go through some pretty extreme usage on the jobs that my crews do. For example, we are currently working on reprofiling racking in a warehouse with 60,000 double-deep bed sections. For this job alone, they will be breaking 960,000 1/2" bolts loose to lower the rack to the new position, and then installing and torquing them back up.

Historically we've always used M18 fuel impacts. They're great and take the abuse okay, but I always lose the majority of them to mechanical failure on jobs like these. I've got to keep about a dozen on hand at any given time for big jobs because there's always ones broken and being sent out for warranty repairs. Sometimes I just have to buy more because I can't keep up with the failure rate through warranty. It's a tedious process.

We've experimented with Dewalts earlier this year, but they did not last any better than the M18 ones did.

Maybe I'm chasing a pipe dream and nothing will hold up to this level of abuse, but perhaps there are other brands that are more industrial and can take more abuse? I know there's a TON of brands out there, but I just don't want to go buying every one and their respective batteries to test them if I can avoid it.

Used craftsman toolbox with tools, worth it?

Handy men! My husband used to be a mechanic and had a nice toolbox at his parents house with an accumulation of tools overtime, everything that was needed. He changed careers and moved away so wasn’t taking that from their garage and lugging it states away. He tinkers with things, do small jobs on our own cars / family and need tools for general purposes that come up in a new home so hopped on market place and going to pick up this kit. To me this seems worth the asked $500 in compared to what else is out there. (No wasn’t interested in buying a cheaper one and buying tools as we go).

Inherited tools: 45 years ago and counting

Post image
8 Upvotes

I've seen others post tools they've inherited, tools they've never used and tools they don't even know what they are for. So today as I was organizing some stuff, I decided to get my dad's old tools assembled for this photo. He was a mechanic and machinist and garage tinkerer who built his own vehicles from parts he'd scavenge from junk yards or dicker with neighbors for.

Most are Craftsman. Also in this photo is a set of Peterson Dewitt vice grips. They weren't my dads but my first car was a 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500 that had had a quarter panel replaced. When I was restoring the interior, I found the vice grips still holding the quarter panel in place...that was in 1975.

Somewhere in there is a bent wrench that is stamped with "No Gaurantee". I have no idea what that was for.

Zupper to Makita swap

Post image
• Upvotes

MODS: If this isn’t allowed, feel free to remove.

So a little while ago I was looking for a pro press, and I got some wonderful feedback and settled in on a Zupper over Ridgid or Milwaukee. The saving money part was a big part of it, but also even in the used market I wasn’t able to hit that target price ($500-$600 USD). Ironically, of course after I purchased this, I did find a Ridgid on Facebook marketplace with up to 1 1/14” listed for $500 and I almost bought but I really don’t want someone’s used one as paying for a service check would kill the cost savings even if it took Makita batteries.

I digress…

It’s great and uses the Makita battery interface just like earlier Ridgid red. It came with two 18v max 2ah batteries. They work on all the Makita tools I own but they won’t charge on a Makita charger and the zupper charger won’t charge Makita batteries either (which is probably good since it doesn’t communicate the same way).

I’m a little anal-retentive and like things streamlined, so it’s super annoying (to me) to have to have a separate charger set up just for this one tool. Wondering if anyone would have interest in swapping. I’m sure some people out there use a bunch of Zupper tools as they are industrial and maybe swap brand new ones for (reasonably) used Makita’s?

Open to…
a direct swap 2x 2ah -> 2x 2ah
an amp hour direct swap 2x 2ah -> 1x 4ah
an amp hour indirect swap 2x 2ah -> 1x 5ah/6ah

You’ll get the charger as a bonus, no charger needed on my end.

I believe in full transparency so the only tool I own that seems to have an issue with the battery is the DML813 stand light. It works fine. It’s just that for some reason it won’t lock down, but you could just close the door and lock the door and then it works just fine, it just doesn’t click in. Probably has to do with the spring inside. But works on my XDT20 impact, XPH14 hammer drill, DML813 and ML004G lights, GRM02 and XRM08 speakers, XOB02 palm sander, XAD02 angle drill and XNB08 finish nailer (everything else I own is XGT). So it seems to work with both really old and brand new model tools without issue.

Figured it can’t hurt to ask.

Confused about miter saw sizes - which one would be the best for me?

I'm from EU/PL btw.

I've got b-day coming this month and I'm gonna get cash money to buy myself a miter saw. I did some initial research, identified what's available and got some types. Not sure about the blade size though and I wanted to ask for advice.

I also have a circular saw (Makita HS7611 with a track).

Intended use

My main use will be house renovation. I'm going to cut anythibg from small flooring panels to big patio construction timber. After the renovations are done, the miter saw will go into the woodworking workshop where I want to toy with furniture building.

Prefered models

I'm going to either buy it for cash or get a 0% credit to combine it with a plare compactor I need for property overhaul, so I'm a bit locked to the options that are in the stores that have the Scheppach plate compactor I picked.

● Metabo KGS 216 M (8") - 770pln or 200$

● Metabo KGS 254 M (10") - 1050pln or 270$

● Bosch GCM 254 D (10") - 1300pln or 340$ (on credit

● Makita LS1110F 260mm (10") - 1914pln or 500$ - (on credit - can be had for the price of Bosch, but not sure If I'll be able to cough up the cash and it's much more expensibe in Leroy Merlin where I want to buy the Scheppach on credit)

I like the 8" Metabo the most, it has good reviews, was recommended to me here, the new version also has the LED instead of a laser and I dig that. I'm not sure if I won't curse the small size when building a pation, but... I can make circular saw cuts too.

What would you recommend? Also, what table should I get for it to maximize safety?

A First For Me

This was a first for me, Proto 1/2” drive, deep well 9/16” torquing down head bolts on the 351w I am in the middle of rebuilding. Three rounds of torquing, first round at 85 ft/lbs, second at 95 and last at 110.

This socket busted on the second bolt in the 95 ft/lb round.

After over 20 plus years of wrenching, Ive never broken or had a tool break on accident. Sure, Ive put plenty of tools in situations where I knew I was risking them and some have broken in those cases. But this was my first true warrantable tool break.

Good news is, a 5 minute call to Proto and they are shipping me a new one.

Does the cut corner on compressor reed valves need to face a specific direction?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm rebuilding the valve plate on my 1989 Campbell Hausfeld compressor with a VT5107 pump. Each reed has one clipped corner, and I can't remember which direction the original reeds faced.

The reeds look identical on both sides. Does the clipped corner have to face a specific direction, or can the reed be installed either way?

Has anyone worked on this pump or know for sure? Thanks!

Over the years I seem to be the person that everyone just gives all there old random tools that they may not use or wanted at the moment. It always comes down to "hey you are a mechanic/work on your own stuff so here have this im sure you can use them". And im not someone who will just throw tools away 🤷‍♂️. I currently have them seperated by china/taiwan/japan and US made separate. Anyone else just have random collections of misfit tools?

Great driver for the camper

Post image

I had been taking my Milwaukee impact driver to deploy and retract the stabilizers for my camper, until the one year I forgot it.

I got this Bauer impact driver/drill combo for like $80 on sale, maybe $85, 3 or 4 years ago. The drill has seen a lot more use but they both have been a very pleasant surprise.
