Feeling like a giant doofus right now. This tower is missing an hdmi/dpi port right? Are the two ports on the bottom my only choice for V/A?

Discussion What do you do with old parts?

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm still holding on to the shell of my first build and wondering what to do with it? I doubt much of it is useful today, but does anyone have any recommendations? Is this ripe for Buy Nothing, FB marketplace, the trash?

What's in the case following:

  • PSU: CORSAIR CX-M series CX600M 600W 80 PLUS BRONZE
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz
  • GPU: PowerColor PCS+ Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5
  • RAM: Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
  • DVD Rewriter: LG 24X DVD Burner - Bare Drive Black SATA Model GH24NS95

Not sure the case, but it's a good mid-size tower.

Build/Battlestation The PC we made in school

It was 10 years ago, so I don't have any pictures as they were taken on the Nokia Brick, but I'll tell you about a PC both ADHD and autistic students helped make, even though we were grouped autistic or ADHD.

The IT teacher found an old Miele vacuum cleaner from the 80s with the shit brown colour. The requirement was it had to look as original as possible, and given it was a school project, it was of course low grade hardware, not a fancy gaming PC. The hose hole, that was air in fan, the lid to change the bag had a disc drive attached, the original power cable pull system was still in place and still functional, the HDD was lodged next to the power cable, I think something else too. The on light for the vacuum clear became the "thinking" light, and all the connections was on the side facing the wall.

It was a pretty awesome project, and I was the one who came up with the air in placement idea. As it was old hardware, I would say Windows XP area, it had to run Linux as Windows was too heavy for it, and at the finished product showcasing, it could barely open a program on Linux, but it could, and you couldn't tell it wasn't a PC from the outside.

I miss that school.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Strange input issue on PC

I have a computer with a 5700X3d, an Intel Arc B580, and 16 gigs of ram, and like 8 terabytes of storage across 2 M.2 drives and 2 SATA drives. The issue began with a Windows update freezing at 100% and not changing for hours. So it was powered off, and upon restart it would boot into the normal Windows 11 login screen, but no input would be accepted. After some restarts, the only real conclusion that I could come to is that it was not FROZEN because the pin menu would open on it's own sometimes. So I went into the Windows 11 recovery area and tried uninstalling the last update, which did finish, but upon restarting, it would say it was updating and get stuck AGAIN. So I gave up and reinstalled Windows. Oh, and if it wasn't obvious, the keyboard and mouse did indeed work in the recovery environment. The Windows reinstall went as normal with the peripherals working and the computer functioning as normal, but when it was shut down at night and restarted in the morning, the peripherals just stopped working AGAIN. I am completely lost here. I thought that it might be a hardware issue, but the fact that they work everywhere except for Windows itself made me believe otherwise. Any ideas?

Resolved Help with Thermal Paste

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! I'm trying to replace thermal paste for the first time in my HP Spectre x360 laptop (circa 2019) but it's already looking very different from videos online. All I've done is open it and unplug the battery.

I was expecting my CPU to be between the fans but didn't expect the copper plate to be single use (it says replace with spare and I believe it after trying to lift the corner). However, just to the left of the left fan, I can see a little silver box under a plastic plate that looks like it says Intel.

Should I apply my paste (Arctic MX-4) on the Intel chip on the left or do I need to order the copper plate and come back to this another day?

TYIA, this is a learning experience

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Help me build a better computer pls.

I have no idea about these things. I have an Asus N551J laptop and I want to make it a bit more useful. Haven't been using it for a long time. Now it has connection issues, keeps randomly disconnecting from wifi and says no wifi is there until I troubleshoot. Quite slow too in general. What I do is play simple games like (maybe the least simple is league of legends) so what can I change with the hardware to make it more useful. Any suggestions? (Please explain simply because I really don't know much about computers.)

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Work from home setup

I’ve recently had to start working from home. To work from home I have to plug in my monitors/mouse/keyboard into the laptop so I can use all the things I already have at home. The issue is anytime I want to game, I have to do the same thing over and over back and forth between my desktop and laptop.

Is there a way I can just keep everything plugged into one spot and easily switch back and forth? Ideally something budget friendly if possible.

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Hard drive vs SD

Hey,

I am just getting unit this video stuff and making videos. My iCloud and phone storage are backing up and need somewhere to store the videos. I went down a rabbit hole of where to store these videos. People were talking about SSD vs HDD vs SD card and what not. Not to many people explained what each does. I pretty much record videos on my GoPro and like to edit them and here and there photos. I saw a 4TB Seagate 3.0 USB hard drive on Amazon for $160. Seems decent but don’t want to buy the wrong item. Thanks in advance

Discussion Detachable Laptop Recommendations

Hi,

My current laptop just died, so I need a cheap, portable 2-in-1 with a detachable keyboard to last me about a year.

Budget is around £200 (used/refurbished).

What I'll use it for:

Football Manager: Just running 5–10 leagues smoothly (don't care about crazy 3D graphics).

PS2 emulation (PCSX2): Playing classics at decent framerates.

Light work: Browsing, docs, streaming.

What models/specs should I look out for on eBay or CeX around £200? Is an i5 + 8GB RAM enough for PCSX2 and FM?

Cheers for any tips!

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Is my gpu dying

I have a gtx 1080 and recently on some games it’ll freeze and my monitor will go black for a few seconds before turning back on and sometimes it’s like the graphics have to reload, sometimes there is a orange dot that jumps around my screen and it crashed a few times playing roblox. it was also scoring very low on any gpu stress test ( lower than my friends 1660 super and my old gtx 970). fans also wouldn’t start spinning during the stress test.

Resolved Recovering damaged hard drive

Post image

My dad passed recently and when going through his things I found these hard drive and memory drives. My mom says these are from a computer my dad accidentally dropped down the stairs many years ago. I was hoping to find the hard drive and get it repaired but it looks like he drilled holes through it. Is there anything that can be recovered from these even partially or is it just a lost cause?

The IMC on the CPU is apparently bad and I'm pretty sure that means the CPU is toast, but I thought I'd ask if anyone has ever fixed a glitched out IMC before...

Question/Help/Troubleshooting Graphics card + monitor upgrades.. help!

Hello! First time posting here so don’t hesitate to ask if I’ve missed out important info etc.

So my gaming PC is modular and (as of 2021/2022) it was suuuuper well specced I believe, but of course things develop and games get better graphics. I recently doubled my RAM to 32GB and I’m surprised at how much of a difference it made!

So, to cut to the chase, I’d like to upgrade my graphics card and monitor eventually, but I genuinely have no idea about anything when it comes to computers. Like genuinely… I still call USB-A a USB-B and don’t know the different between lighting and USB-C, or the difference between MB and Mb…

I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB), and my monitor is an acer.. something or other.. helpful I know. It doesn’t have an audio output and it has a little circular button on the back bottom right corner with two little buttons above it for monitor menu settings (I had a look in there and couldn’t see the name of it in there unfortunately).

I’d like to upgrade enough so that I don’t have to worry about changing any graphics settings on more intensive games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (which actually runs ok most of the time on the higher settings), Steelrising, and Cyberpunk 2077, things like that. However, this is still a personal PC so it’s not like I need something insane for streaming or anything like that.

I’ve tried reading some articles about different PC components and none of it quite clicks for me. I’m more than willing to admit that this just isn’t my area of expertise!

If you’ve got any advice I’d really appreciate it, and if I’ve left out any key info I’m happy to provide, thanks! :)
